Bembridge Parish News No. 603 Happy New Year The second week in January, and I spotted daffodils out in bloom, and the lobelia which I planted last May is still flowering in the pots in my front garden. Most of us are saying it s been a lovely mild winter, and yet seasons are here for a reason - in the world of plants, trees and flowers they enable rest, refreshment, recharging, and renewed growth. Human life is full of seasons. There are times when changes happen which mean we need to take time to carefully consider our priorities, possibilities and potential. There are some seasons in life which knock us for six and leave us feeling battered by the storm we have faced. There are other seasons which bring us hope and excitement, and others which are unexpected. Whatever season you are in at this time - just as winter turns to spring, and spring to summer, summer to autumn and on again to winter - be assured that life continues to move on, and that we will find strength to cope and to get through the hard times, we find comfort in the sad times, and energy to celebrate all that is good. Thank God that He gives us the gift of friends, family, neighbours, church family, colleagues, to walk through the seasons of life together. God bless Frances 2

The Bembridge Parsonage Sir Henry Thompson built the first Vicarage, then called a Parsonage, in about 1829, on a site where our present Vicarage now stands, at a cost of 650. Sir Henry was the village s first Vicar and was in residence there from 1827 to Many people over the years have asked me why the Vicarage is so large and the answer is that in 1851, when the Rev. J Le Mesurier became the village s Vicar, it was the custom in those days for many clergy to take in, as pupils, young men and boys to train them for the Church, Lawyers or Statesmen, so therefore many rooms were needed. The Vicarage we see today was not the first to be built on the site. The first building, then called a Parsonage, was erected by Sir Henry Thompson, the village s first Vicar, in about It was a brick house with five bedrooms, so quite a large house. The Rev. J Le Mesurier pulled this building down to build his new Parsonage. He was later to buy an acre of land in 1860 for a Glebe, where Elizabeth Court now stands, and increased the size of the garden. The drawing on the front cover is of the first Parsonage and was drawn by Margaret Frances Franklyn, whose husband was the Assistant Curate of continued page 5 Mr Clark s cottage. This sketch, by Margaret Frances Franklyn, shows the village s first Church and the cottage where she lived with her husband. She and her husband, the Rev. T W Franklyn, the first Assistant Curate to the village, lived there from 1830 to

continued from page 3 Bembridge Holy Trinity Church from 1830 to Margaret s drawings were made in an artist s sketch book which contained several other drawings of houses and people of Bembridge. This sketch book was bought by a good friend of mine via the internet in the U.S.A., and he was kind enough to send me copies of the Bembridge drawings. Margaret and her husband lived in a cottage near to the Church, then known as Mr Clark s cottage, then later as Swiss Cottage which was demolished in 1919 to allow the War Memorial to be erected on the site in Drawings of the cottage and the Church are also in the sketch book. My thanks to Mr J Roberts who sent me the copies of the drawings John Woodford January 2016 Lent Lunches 2016 Every Friday during Lent between 12 noon and 1.30pm in The Cloisters from Friday 12 th February until Friday 18 th March, in return for a donation you will receive a bowl of soup, bread, tea or coffee and plenty of good company. 5 GINGERBREAD HOUSES A lovely smell of gingerbread filled the Cloisters just before Christmas, as a merry group of parishioners set about constructing and decorating little houses. Armed with a flatpack biscuit kit, a list of top tips, a box of Royal icing and a piping bag, the intrepid builders set to work! A hush defended as walls were glued together with sticky white icing and then once the house took shape, everyone relaxed and sipped a glass of mulled wine! Then the real fun began! Roofs dripped with icing icicles, and groaned under the weight of jelly sweets, chocolate buttons and dolly mixtures. Carefully iced paths led up to the front doors and gardens had rows of tiny vegetables all cleverly made from different sweets. Front doors were adorned with tiny beautifully iced holly wreaths and finally, each house was dusted with snow, before being gift wrapped in cellophane and carried home triumphantly! It was a very jolly festive evening and raised for the Children s room at the Earl Mountbatten Hospice. 8

Bells ring out at the Library a success story Bembridge Community Library s annual Christmas Fayre held on Saturday 12 December has been heralded a great success, raising hundreds of pounds towards its running costs. The raffle alone raised nearly 400 after costs and with the sale of teas, coffees and homemade cakes as well as income from the gift stall, the Library benefited by more than 500. Many of the raffle prizes were kindly donated by local businesses and library supporters, including a generous 100 voucher contribution from members of the Bembridge Business Association. Organised by volunteers including Liz Mitchell, Glynis Cunliffe, Chris Brennan, and Chris Thornton, the event included music from the Bembridge Recorder Consort, Bembridge Bell Ringers and a charming rendition of Christmas Carols sung by the children of St Helens Primary School. Library volunteers pause to listen to the children of St Helen s School at the Bembridge Community Library Christmas Fayre on 12 December. 10

Women s World Day of Prayer The service this year has been prepared by the women of Cuba and will be held on Friday March 4th at 2.00 pm at Holy Trinity Church The address will be given by The Reverend Dr Amanda Bloor The service will be followed by refreshments 12

Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat Guild news Lifeboat action during December: There were no service calls during December, but on the 27th, the allweather lifeboat Alfred Albert Williams went to Chichester Harbour for the annual get together with the crews from Portsmouth, Hayling Island, and Selsey RNLI stations. After berthing at Spark s Marina, they had lunch at the Hayling Island lifeboat boathouse, returning to Bembridge by mid-afternoon. Coffee morning Saturday, 13th February: There will be a coffee morning in support of the lifeboats at the Village Hall on Saturday, 13th February from 10am to 12 noon. There will be sales of cakes, books, jewellery, bric-a-brac and lifeboat souvenirs and gifts. There will also be a tombola and raffle. As always, all proceeds will go directly towards supporting our lifeboats. Lifeboat Guild AGM Wednesday, 17th February: The Annual General Meeting of the Bembridge Guild will take place at the Village Hall on Wednesday, 17th February, at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. There will be light refreshments following the meeting and everyone is welcome to attend. The Bembridge Lifeboat Jigsaw Puzzle: Readers may have noticed that 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles of the Bembridge lifeboat and station have been on sale in the village during the run up to Christmas. The production and sale of these, all specifically supporting the Bembridge lifeboat was promoted and organised by Guild member Trish Beckett, (see picture on next page). As of the end of December, 76 out of a production run of 80 of these jigsaws had been sold through local outlets, including the Lane End Welcome Stores, Tollgate Café and Spinnaker Chandlery. Many thanks go to these for their support with this fund-raising initiative continued page 23 22

continued from page 21 and recognition, also to Trish for arranging and organising the project, which, up to the end of the year, had raised over 300 for the Bembridge lifeboat. Opening times for February: The offshore boathouse and RNLI souvenir shop will be open every day throughout February from 2 4pm, except during the school half-term week from 13th to 21st, when they will be open from 11am 4pm. Ken Orchard Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat Guild Press Officer BEMBRIDGE WINDMILL WI The report of the fun and entertainment of the Christmas meeting of the Bembridge Windmill WI was included in the last edition of the Parish News. 16 Bembridge Townswomen s Guild In December Bembridge Townswomen s Guild was attended by our Federation Chairman, Janet Wardle, secretary, Vera Theobold and President, Shirley Connely. They were welcomed by our Vice-Chairman Annette Halls. Janet gave us a little insight into the work of the Federation on the island as we have so many new members. We were then delighted to welcome the two Scouts from Bembridge who were chosen to attend the World Scout Jamboree in Japan, and who we helped to sponsor. Megan and Elys had agreed to tell us all about their trip and how it had inspired them. Megan s parents also came to project the slides and videos that they brought back. Megan and Elys told us about the host families they were placed with and the different experiences they had. They explained how they tasted local foods, visited various landmarks and took part in the huge Jamboree, making lasting friendships with scouts from many different countries. The trip they made to Hiroshima had a very profound effect on them both and they described it as a moving and life changing experience. Megan told us about the meaning of the origami peace crane and each scout took out 25 of these folded cranes and hung them at the sight of the bombings. Dot presented the scouts and Janet with a small gift for Christmas. The meeting then broke for refreshments of fruit punch made by Hilary Haley and cookies made by Megan. The meeting concluded with a very quick business session and the final arrangements for our Christmas Dinner. The first meeting of the New Year was a quiz and games evening. Megan once again joined us and showed everyone how to fold a Japanese peace crane, which was great fun. Gill Webb then gave us some quizzes and puzzles to test our brains. 26 continued page 27

continued from page 25 We are now looking forward to a year of varying speakers, activities and events organized by the Federation. Any lady wishing to join us would be made most welcome. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month in the Methodist Hall at 7.30 pm. 18 Meeting: Friday February 19th at 7:15pm - Garden Styles This month we welcome back Rob Mew from the Isle of Wight College - one of our most popular and knowledgeable speakers. Camellias are one of the earliest shrubs to come into bloom - a sure sign that Spring is on its way. With their attractive flowers and dark glossy foliage, they make an eyecatching display, especially when combined with spring-flowering bulbs. Camellias come from Japan, South Korea and China and were first brought to the UK by plant hunters around 1730, when they were treated as exotics. They became more popular in the 19th century when it was discovered that they could survive outdoors in mild climates. Lots of new cultivars were produced in colours ranging from red to pink and white, and even yellow. Now they are also bred for hardiness and scent. Camellias prefer slightly acidic soil and need a sheltered spot to avoid the flowers being frost-damaged. They can also thrive in pots but need to be kept well watered in summer as that is when the buds form. Jobs to do in February 1. Look out for camellias in garden centres. Donation is a particularly good one to buy as it is very free-flowering. 2. If you re going to grow vegetables, cover the soil now with polythene or a cloche to warm it up. That will give you a head start later on. 3. You can start sowing many seeds now - check the seed packets and make sure your containers are clean and you are using fresh seed compost. Most seeds will need heat to germinate but sweet peas and broad beans can be left in the greenhouse or a cold frame. 4. Remember to leave food and clean water out for the birds. It s a lean time of year for them with fewer insects and berries around. They re also a joy to watch on bird tables or feeders. 5. On a nice day, get out in the countryside and enjoy the fresh air. Look out for signs of Spring - it s surprising how much colour and new growth there is around even at this time of year. Gardens filled with dogwoods, grasses and early bulbs can all look spectacular. 29
