PENTREF BAPTIST CHAPEL The Chapel at the Heart of Newbridge The Newsletter Of Newbridge-On-Wye Baptist Church May 2018
FROM THE MINISTER Christian Aid Week takes place this month. Jointly the two churches in Newbridge, All Saints and the Baptist Chapel, are supporting this work. In this month s edition of the Newsletter you will find an envelope. We will not be doing a house to house collection, but if you would like to support the work by giving a donation, then please use the envelope and drop it into the Post Office where there will be a box. Alternatively you could post it through the letter-box of Cartref (the house with the green door, opposite the mile-post on the main road where the Baptist Minister lives). Thank you in advance for your support. I leave the rest of this page for Christian Aid to say something. Steve Christian Aid Week: Together we re stronger than the storms In Haiti, Marcelin raised his three daughters alone. They ve endured some of the worst natural disasters on earth. They re not just survivors. They re fighters. But they re only so strong. Photo Credit: Christian Aid They won t survive the next hurricane without your help. This Christian Aid Week, you can be in their corner. You can help them build a home that will weather the next storm, so they won t need to fight to survive anymore. (Just one example of how Christian Aid is working around the world)
COFFEE MORNING First Wednesday of the month 10:30 12ish The next Coffee Morning is on Wednesday May 2 nd We will supply the coffee and tea the cakes and biscuits and you can come along to supply the good-humoured company. No charge but donations gratefully received in aid of: The local branch of the Samaritans Bible Study On Tuesday mornings a group of us get together to look at a particular part of the Bible. This is an informal gathering where all are encouraged to take part. We are not a bunch of academics debating the finer points of a text, but a group of people who want to hear what God has got to say to us through His word. In May we will be continuing to look at the gospel of John. If you would like to come along we will be meeting on Tuesday 8 th & 22 nd at 10:30am, in the Baptist Church hall. A few of us go to lunch in Rhayader after the meeting. You would be more than welcome to join us. (2 courses for only 5.50)
THE MONTH AT PENTREF Clive Barrett As the important Christian Easter period straddled the change-over of months, it seems appropriate to start this report with Maundy Thursday evening when Rev Steve led a short communion service, this taking place for the third year running. As well as the communion there was an unaccompanied song, appropriate readings, reflections and prayers. The message centred around the last supper, and the fact that Jesus picked disciples with lots of faults, which can be compared with us and we can take comfort from this fact. On Good Friday morning the annual joint Walk of Witness with All Saints was held, starting at that church and ending at Pentref, for hot cross buns, tea and coffee. The Passion as recorded in the gospel of John was followed, with Rev Steve and Rev Petra taking the main roles, and other members of both churches reading the supporting parts. The first day of April was Easter Sunday Rev Steve preached at both the morning communion and evening services, when naturally on that day the theme was Alleluia He is Risen. The monthly Coffee Morning was held on the first Wednesday when enough donations were received for the normal target of 100 to be completed. This time the money raised will go to Friends of Newbridge on Wye School. On the second Sunday Rev Steve continued his studies in the book of Colossians, with the main heading Who is Jesus we are all created in the image of God. He spoke of images, icons, and idols and warned of the danger of getting the wrong picture of God, rather than the true image of God as displayed in Jesus. In the evening he followed his earlier studies in Psalm 119. The third Sunday's Colossians heading was He is the Image of the Invisible God. The sub headings included the right and wrong images of God, God was pleased to have all fullness dwell in him, Jesus is the image of the invisible God---- in human form he is the picture of the Heavenly Father. God waits for his children to come back and waits for them with open arms. In the evening the guest preacher was the Rev Neil Perinton of Welshpool. At the fourth and fifth Sunday morning services Rev Paul Tarling of Llandrindod Wells led the worship, on the first of these services he concentrated on the 23 rd Psalm, and the Good Shepherd. On the fourth Sunday evening there was a visit from the Rev Simeon Baker of the Baptist Union of Wales who occupied the pulpit. The Rev Andrew Wyton was the guest speaker on the fifth and final Sunday evening of the month.
MEN S FELLOWSHIP MEETING Clive Barrett At the April meeting Henry Cave started the morning with a short session of devotions, comparing the Books of Ezekiel and Revelation, and the connection between the power of the throne, the sign of God's mercy and the contrast with the rainbow. The speaker was Ray Price of Penybont, who showed photos of Postcards and spoke of his hobby of collecting and exchanging postcards of local scenes. He thanked the Men's Meeting for inviting him to speak, and thanked member John Richards for assisting him with the power point presentation. Ray showed pictures and pictures of different features of most of the North Radnorshire villages, with particular reference to Penybont and Newbridge on Wye. There were pictures of local events like: dinners, football teams, carnivals, sports, churches, and chapels, regarding Penybont, the hunt at the Severn Arms, W.I, Midland Bank, Police Station, The Thomas Shop, butter making classes, football team, and the old smithy. Finally the speaker impressed his local audience with a number of Newbridge views, including All Saints Church, Pentref, Vicarage, Post Office, the Village Green where one of the biggest Horse Fairs in Wales was held, the different bridges over the River Wye since the first was built in the 1700's, which leads over to Llysdinam Hall. He also showed pictures of the New Inn, local school, and the now closed since 1962, Newbridge on Wye Railway Station. The vote of thanks for a most interesting talk was given by member Clive Barrett, who added that it was great that people in the past took the trouble to take these photos, and send postcards. The Men s Fellowship The next meeting will be on Tuesday May 15 th At 10:30am Speaker TBC

Thank you to Newbridge Football Club Newbridge Carnival Committee have been approached by many people about the possibility of having The Carnival on the village green. We have also noticed a drop in numbers attending the Carnival, so we have spent many hours looking into this possibility. We now have permission to use the village green, and we feel as a committee we should take the communities suggestions and do what s right for the village. This of course now means no Carnival down the Football Club, a decision we didn t come to easily, but we have to do things to keep The Carnival going for many years to come. Newbridge Football Club have been a great asset to The Carnival, and we are greatly appreciative for everything they have all done over the last few years to make it a great success. Without Newbridge Football Club, there simply wouldn t have been a Carnival in the village. From everybody on the The Carnival Committee, thank you for everything you have done since The Carnival started back up again over 5 years ago. Newbridge-on-Wye Carnival Committee Community Shop Friends of Newbridge Primary School and The Carnival are joint sharing the Community Charity Shop in Middleton Street, Llandrindod Wells from the 19th May for a week. Any clothing, household goods and items you can donate for us to sell would be greatly appreciated to raise funds for two brilliant Village causes. Please contact Adam on if you would like me to pick the items up, or please drop them off at the shop from lunchtime onwards, Saturday 19th May. Thank you.

If you were unable to get to a service at Pentref, or would like to hear the message again you will find most of them on YouTube at the following link: This newsletter is aimed to let the whole village know what is happening at the Baptist Church. We intend to continue putting this newsletter out monthly to every home in the village. We would like the newsletter to be a service to the village and will happily publicise events organised by other groups. If you have an event you would like included in future issues please contact either Steve or Elsa.
