The Paschal Mystery The Paschal Mystery is lived out in the lives of believers when they are people of hope fully believing in new life and the Resurrection. They believe that hope and life can come from suffering and sacrifice; that by giving, you receive; that great joy and satisfaction come from giving up what you want. We experience the kingdom in our everyday encounters with Jesus. When we journey with Jesus through paschal mystery livingwe are healed of our infirmities. We are healed each time we come to church to give praise and thanks to God and in this act of worship we become more perfect members of the body of Christ. We are healed each time we put others ahead of ourselves and in these simple acts we strengthen our faith. We are healed each time we pause for a few seconds to give thanks to God for the many blessings of each day because by giving thanks to God we acknowledge that God has acted in Christ. Expressing gratitude is more than a simple social grace; it deepens the relationship between giver and receiver. For Christians, giving thanks to God reinforces our most important relationship. Gratitude is an expression of paschal mystery living because by giving thanks we acknowledge our own indebtedness. Gratitude is also an expression of discipleship and a sign of God s reign. Can you help Bembridge Heritage Society? The Bembridge Heritage Society are planning to hold another exhibition in the Village Hall this year, entitled: Entertaining Bembridge featuring all forms of entertainment over the years, including carnivals, parades, fetes, regattas, pubs, clubs, shows, sports, drama, music, etc. Do you have any photos, documents, programmes, etc. that the Society could borrow or copy to form part of the exhibitions. If so, please contact Verena Sparrow on or verena@thesparrows.co.uk 3

BRAMBLE & BERRY Early signs of Spring tage, Home, Garden & Gifts Open Mon-Sat 10 to 5 High Street Bembridge PO35 5SF Tel by Mike Kirk 2019 The early signs of spring are here Snowdrops in flower and Mimosa in bloom but everyone suspects the worst of winter is yet to come! The same goes for many of the birds and creatures with whom we share Bembridge s many wooded areas and gardens. People make a point of feeding birds at this time of year but don t forget our squirrels too. Unlike their grey relations, red squirrels don t hibernate and so are particularly grateful for food supplements just now! Most nuts are fine, they particularly like walnuts, which surprisingly they can carry away whole in the shell but please not Brazils, which are harmful to them. WANTED! We need volunteers to help distribute our BPN in Bembridge. Only qualifications required: a friendly disposition, a pleasant smile and a likeness for walking. If you are interested or require more information please contact the Distribution Manager, Barbara Terry on

Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat News Lifeboat action December 2018 Bembridge lifeboat carries out medical evacuation of Spanish seaman: On the 8th December at 10am the Tamar all-weather lifeboat Alfred Albert Williams was requested by HM Coastguard to carry out the medical evacuation ( medivac ) of a crewmember having suffered a suspected stroke, from the 94 metre Spanish dredger, Costa de Luz, anchored half a mile NE of the station. With the lifeboat quickly on the scene, the casualty, who spoke no English but was able to walk, was swiftly transferred to the lifeboat and taken to a waiting ambulance at Portsmouth s Camber docks. The lifeboat returned to station and was recovered by 11.15am. This was the first shout for new crew member Steve Jones. On Saturday, 29th December the Alfred Albert Williams was launched at 10am to go to Hayling Island for the annual get together and exchange of information with crews and personnel from neighbouring mainland RNLI stations at Hayling Island and Portsmouth. Remembering the stranding of the SS Narraganset on Bembridge Ledge 100 years ago: One hundred years ago, on the 1st February 1919, locals were amazed to see a large steamship aground at Long Ledge at Forelands with her hull high and dry, just a short distance from the beach. The vessel was the American steamship Narragansett which had been commissioned for troop-carrying duties and was loaded with 2,70 British and overseas troops, returning to England. During a fierce snowstorm the ship had grounded on the infamous ledge not far from the wreck of the paddle steamer Empress Queen which had foundered almost exactly three years previously, also engaged in troopcarrying duties. Having established that the ship was not badly damaged, an operation to lighten her for re-floating, by evacuating the troops was commenced, with a number of the troops temporarily billeted with local families in Bembridge, although the majority were found accommodation on the mainland. 7 continued p9

continued from p7 Many of the troops were Americans and Canadians and when they came ashore, they brought with them goodies and candy bars which they generously handed out to the local children and during their short stay they were regarded as celebrities and welcome guests to our village. The Bembridge lifeboat, Queen Victoria II along with a variety of other vessels, including destroyers, tugs and even a train ferry boat were engaged in the operation to re-float the vessel, which was successfully completed a few days later with the ship little the worse for her grounding. However, there is still a groove cut into the rock ledge to this day, nicknamed the Narragansett Cut, where the ship had ploughed into it. The incident brought a large numbers of sightseers to Bembridge to witness the spectacle and the Narragansett s grounding went down in the annals as yet another unfortunate victim of the infamous Bembridge Ledge. Carols in the Boathouse Thursday, 13th December: Despite a strong and bitterly cold easterly wind on the night of the 13th December, around fifty or so hardy lifeboat supporters enjoyed an evening of popular Christmas carols in the inshore boathouse at Lane End, led by the Reverend Dr Amanda Bloor and accompanied by the Jazz Tones quartet. Readings were given by the President of the IW Lifeboat Board, Major-General Martin White, Lifeboat Operations Manager, John Keyworth and a reading from the Gospel of St John by the Reverend Bloor. 9 continued p 11

continued from p9 The evening was concluded with mulled wine, sausage rolls, hot sausages and mince pies prepared by the ladies of the Bembridge Lifeboat Guild. The Lifeboat Guild would like to thank all those businesses and suppliers that donated the food for the refreshments. Over 250 was raised from donations in support of our lifeboats. Guild and Crew annual Christmas Dinner: Around 70 members of the Lifeboat Guild, crew and supporters enjoyed a festive Christmas dinner on the 8th of December, held once again at Bembridge Sailing Club. Thanks go to all those who arranged the decorations and in particular, Lifeboats Education and Visits Officer, Deborah Meadows for organising what was a most enjoyable event. The evening concluded with a rousing and lively rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas by everyone, accompanied by Stuart Aitken on piano. Bembridge lifeboat station takes runner-up award in the Bembridge Christmas Star competition: Observers would have noticed a bright star enveloping an illuminated yellow welly boot at the end of the lifeboat pier on the offshore boathouse over the Christmas period. As one of the entrants in the Bembridge Christmas Star Competition, it was awarded the runner-up prize in the Charities/Group category of the annual competition. The accompanying photo shows Bembridge Lifeboat Operations Manager, John Keyworth receiving the award from Cllrs. Sheila Weedall and Marianne Sullivan at the prize giving event. 11 continued p12

continued from p11 Coffee Morning Saturday, 16th February There will be a coffee morning in support of the lifeboats at Bembridge Village Hall on Saturday, 16th February, from 10am to 12 midday. There will be sales of cakes, books, jewellery, bric-a-brac and lifeboat gifts and souvenirs. There will also be a raffle. All proceeds will go direct towards supporting our lifeboats, helping to save lives at sea. Solo supporter visiting every lifeboat station in the UK: It is understood that a lifeboat supporter by the name of Beth Wicks is making a solo and unsupported mission to visit every lifeboat station in the UK on a campaign to raise funds for the RNLI and Lowland Rescue. Bembridge will be on her itinerary, but it is not known when at this stage. It is understood that she has raised 500 for the charities so far. Opening times for February: The RNLI shop and offshore boathouse will be open every day throughout February, from 2pm to 4pm, except for the school half-term, 16th 24th Feb., when they will be open from 11am to 4pm. Ken Orchard Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat Guild Press Officer Bereavement Triangle Group Have you have lost a loved one, either recently or a while ago? 9 Bembridge Art Society January 2019 From Family Photos by Pat Walker When you read this we shall be well into the NewYear of 2019 and have restarted on another Art Programme. Last month we concluded the year with a successful Christmas party with thirty people present. One extra event for the evening was collecting together and putting on show, paintings made by members,(when at home,) from photographs of babies or toddlers, in their families. Everyone at the party was asked to vote on whose painting was the best! Despite doubts earlier about how many artists would like to do this, there were 19 entries, with excellent results from everyone! The winning artist was Pat Walker. With 19 entrants, some members have obviously been hiding their portrait painting talents to date! I am hoping that a few more of them will now be bold enough to spend time with our regular live portraiture group, rather than sticking to landscapes and still life. This result together with the Collage work in November last, means that a further extension of the range of our activities will hopefully be on the cards in the near future. So anyone reading this who would like to try their hand at any form of art please come and join us! You will be welcome right from the start! John R Hunter

To Love is to open our hearts to people - to listen to them - to appreciate them - to see in them their own unique value - to wish deeply that they may live and grow. Jean Vanier My dear people, let us love one another, since love comes from God and everyone who loves, is begotten by God and knows God. Anyone who fails to love can never have known God, because God is love. We are to love then, because God loved us first. 1 John 4:7-8,19 Lord, Look with favour on us, your people and impart your love to us - not as an idea or concept, but as lived experience. We can only love each other because you have loved us first. Let us know that first love, so that we can see all human love as a reflection of a greater love - a love without conditions or limitations. Amen. Henri Nouwen Jesus said: You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. Matthew 22:37-40 Our behaviour must not be determined by the way others treat us, but by the treatment we receive from Jesus. Dietrich Bonhoeffer 15

Bembridge Windmill WI What a mixed bag of weather Winter has thrown at us so far, but for us all harbouring those warm thoughts with every week that passes it does means that hopefully Spring is not so far away now. We, though at Bembridge Windmill WI, are made of sturdy stuff and shaking off that cold weather it did not stop us all enjoying the festivities of our Christmas meeting and everything Christmas! The meeting started with the reporting of apologies from several members unable to be with us for the evening and good wishes for speedy recoveries for two of our unwell members and greetings for five of our members who would be celebrating their birthdays before we next meet. This followed with a short burst of business firstly our Christmas Coffee Morning this was a very successful fundraiser with a grand total raised. Everyone was warmly thanked for contributing to the event to make it such a success. It was also reported that the Spithead Carol Service, hosted this year by Seaview WI held the previous day was a lovely event and enjoyed by all who attended starting our Christmas Season perfectly. There was also a reminder that Subscriptions for 2019 were due in January. Items from Federation News were also highlighted including an Open Forum meeting to be held in January in Newport giving members an opportunity to discuss the WI s Resolutions for 2019 and also a Cinema WI Movie Event for members to attend later in January with profits raised going to Young Female Carers. Much excitement was expressed by those Members attending Bembridge Windmill WI s own trip to The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton in January to see Gary Barlow s Calendar Girls Show too. A fuller report on all these event in the next edition. So business concluded the Christmas festivities began with an array of lots of delicious food and glasses of wine on offer, and along with lots of chatter, and the fragrance of Christmas wafting throughout whilst members tackled the stress free making of their Christmas Pomander Clove Oranges to take home. More food and wine followed then the infamous, yes infamous!!, Linda and Di s Snatch Raffle where won prizes were whipped away at a tremendously fast rate in the allotted time slot with great hilarity and laughter and shrieks so much fun. Members then finished the evening with the singing of several Christmas Carols in fact the best recipe for a most enjoyable WI evening. 23 continued p25

continued from p23 Our Christmas Lunch at The Old Village Inn was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone with a great menu of delicious food as always, good wine, lots of chatter and laughter, a brilliant raffle thank you Jay and to his team for their excellent service in making this yet another fantastic fun and enjoyable occasion for everyone culminating in a great end to our 2018 programme, which had been very much enjoyed by our members, full of varied and fun packed activities, outings and events and most importantly our lovely members too exactly what the and our WI is all about. Just brilliant! Our next meeting is on Monday February 18th at 7.30pm at The Cloisters when the delights of Curling will be on the Menu. Visitors welcome. For further details please contact either Pam on or Brenda on

Bembridge Friendship Circle There was no coffee morning for the Friendship Circle in January because of the works going on in the Village Hall. However meetings will resume again on the 2 February in the Village Hall from 10am till Noon. Why not pop along and support our community bus charity, make some new friends and perhaps pick up a bargain from our various stalls. We still have tickets available for the 150 club which costs 12 a year and you may be one of 3 lucky winners drawn each month to receive a cash prize. Tickets will be on sale at the coffee morning or you can pop in to the Parish Office any morning to purchase your ticket. The trustees of the Charity were thrilled to receive a small legacy from one of our former users of the bus recently. This donation has been placed into a separate account and set aside for a replacement bus when required. Plans are in place for our Jumble Sale which will take place in the Village Hall on March 30. Further details of where to drop your good quality jumble and bric-a-brac will be appearing in the coming weeks. We hope that you will support your local community bus with donations and with help and support on the day. If you would like to know more about the charity or would like to volunteer to help the group or find out how to hire the bus for your group please contact us on our address: bembridgefriendshipcircle@yahoo.com 27

The Bembridge Belles WI Following the two successful taster sessions in the autumn, the inaugural meeting of the new afternoon WI was held on 14th January. We waited not sure how many ladies would come and join. The room was set up, the new members packs were ready (24 of them), the Advisors and the volunteer committee members were there. And then 55 ladies came. The queue to come in almost reached the door. It was the most fantastic response. Twice the Spinnaker had to bring in extra chairs. The positivity, enthusiasm and goodwill in the room were tangible. Lots of chat, smiles, and introductions were taking place. The afternoon was opened by our Federation Advisor, Margaret Rogers, and the name of the group was voted as The Bembridge Belles WI; the venue was confirmed as The Spinnaker; the date of meetings was confirmed as second Monday of the month and the President, Christine Behan, was elected. It is indicative of the enthusiasm of the ladies that before this meeting, when a SOS went out by for a Secretary, a volunteer came forward within minutes. Within a couple of hours the group had a second volunteer. So Bembridge Belles WI are very lucky to have two Secretaries who will job share. We also have a Treasurer and another Committee member who will act as hostess/welcomer. This Committee member is holding a craft and cake afternoon in her home on 23rd January and I think she will have a full house! During the meeting an appeal went out for a Programme Secretary and during refreshment time, a volunteer came forward. We ran out of new members packs as 40 ladies paid their subs and joined and we are promised another 6 in February and more in April. What wonderful supportive ladies we have in Bembridge and surrounds. Thank you all. Our next meeting will be on 11th February when Steve Warburton will give us an illustrated talk titled 60 birds in 60 minutes. We all know how much the Warburton family support Bembridge in many ways. Steve walks home from the Lane End shop to his house at the harbour and on his way, as a keen bird watcher, he sees many different species. I must admit I have heard his talk before and I found it both interesting and entertaining. We would welcome any visitors who would like to come on 11th February. There is no charge for visitors. continued p31 29

continued from p29 In March we will not be meeting at our usual venue of The Spinnaker. We are having a guided tour of the Island Cheese Company and will have a demonstration, see the different rooms and necessary processes which deliver the cheese and (hopefully) have a taste. Some ladies will meet at The Pointer beforehand and will have either a late lunch or an early afternoon tea before we all arrive at the Cheese Company for 3.30pm. Car shares are recommended and we hope to arrange for everyone to be accompanied at our February meeting. On 8th April we will have a talk by Terri entitled Only the Lighthouse Keeper s Daughter. This should be a lot of fun. On 13th May, Margaret Rogers, our Federation Advisor will visit us and talk about the National Resolutions. After discussion we will vote on which resolution we would like to be carried forward. There are six resolutions to consider. Christine Behan is happy to answer any enquiries either by candjbehn@ gmail.com or phone: So congratulations ladies of the Bembridge Belles WI it was a fantastic start. We are now part of the most influential ladies group in the country and of a Federation with 35 separate WIs on the Island. Full steam ahead. 22 Mark Earp will talk about gardening on the Island from the Ice Age to the Stuarts Friday February 15th at 7.15pm Isle of Wight Gardening History Mark Earp will talk about gardening on the Island fro the Ice Age to the Stuarts SANSEVIERIA PHOTO Better known as mother-in-law s tongue, Sansevieria is a tropical plant native to Africa, Madagascar and Asia. Rather surprisingly, it belongs to the asparagus family. Like the Aspidistra, it became fashionable in the 1960s and has remained popular, due not only to its striking appearance, but also to its tolerance of bad treatment. Its long slender leaves store water, ensuring it is able to withstand periods of drought or neglect. Many Sansevieria have variegated or mottled leaves, often edged with yellow, although the colours are less vibrant if the plant is grown in shade. It even produces flower spikes which are fragrant in the evening to attract pollinating moths. Positioned well, this plant can make a dramatic statement. THINGS TO DO IN FEBRUARY 1. Visit a garden with a winter walk such as Mottisfont (Hampshire) or, further afield, RHS Wisley (Surrey) or Anglesey Abbey (Cambridgeshire). Look out for special snowdrop displays too. 2. Late February is the time to start sowing seeds of slowgrowing crops such as chillies, aubergines and sweet peppers. Sow them in modules and keep them on a windowsill or, better still, in a heated propagator. They will need a temperature of 18ºC to germinate. 3. If you didn t plant bulbs in the autumn, pots of colourful crocus and daffodils should now be available in garden centres. 4. Prepare for the possibility of another hot, dry summer by installing a water butt. Choose a firm, level site and use a stand to raise the level of the tap. Two or more butts can be connected together to make good use of water collection. 32
