1 The Holy Eucharist with Baptism & A service for the ending of a Pastoral Relationship St. James Episcopal Church 25 th Sunday after Pentecost Proper 27 November 11, 2018 Mission Statement: We at St. James Parish believe that we are Christ s own, and that our reason for existence is to follow his commandments to love God and to love our neighbors as ourselves. The church bell will be rung on the 11 th day, the 11 th month and at the 11 th hour in honor of Veterans. If those Veterans would stand as the bell is rung we will know who you are to offer our appreciation. You wrap me in your love, God, like a cozy sweater on a cool fall day. Ruth 3:1-5; 4:13-17 Naomi her mother-in-law said to Ruth, My daughter, I need to seek some security for you, so that it may be well with you. Now here is our kinsman Boaz, with whose young women you have been working. See, he is winnowing barley tonight at the threshing floor. Now wash and anoint yourself, and put on your best clothes and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. When he lies down, observe the place where he lies; then, go and uncover his feet and lie down; and he will tell you what to do. She said to her, All that you tell me I will do. So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When they came together, the Lord made her conceive, and she bore a son. Then the women said to Naomi, Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without next-of-kin; and may his name be renowned in Israel! He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age; for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more 2

EPISTLE READING A reading from the letter to the Hebrews Hebrews 9:24-28 Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. As Jesus taught, he said, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets! They devour widows houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation. He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Parents and Godparents say I present Pieper Leigh Baird to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. The asks the Parents and Godparents Will you be responsible for seeing that the child you present is brought up in the Christian faith and life? I will, with God s help. Will you by your prayers and witness help this child to grow into the full stature of Christ? 5

Then the asks the following questions of the candidates who can speak for themselves, and of the parents and godparents who speak on behalf of the infants and younger children. 7 Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God s help. 7

8 PRAYERS FOR THE CANDIDATES Let us now pray for this person who is to receive the Sacrament of new birth. It is right to give our thanks and praise. 8

9 We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. BAPTISM Pieper Leigh Baird I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon this your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised her to the new life of grace. Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give her an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Then the Priest places a hand on the person s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross and saying Pieper Leigh Baird you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own for ever. Amen. The then says Let us welcome the newly baptized. and 9

10 We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. The newly baptized is now presented with the Baptismal Candle by the Candidate for Holy Orders. Deacon: Pieper, receive the light of Christ, a sign of the new life enkindled within you. THE ENDING OF A PASTORAL RELATIONSHIP PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Deacon Steve Let us pray. Eternal God, creator and preserver of all, and provider of grace to all who toil together in the hope of meaningful living: continue your saving work through your Spirit in our midst. : : : : : : Give grace to your servants, O Lord. Grant that our lives, and Mother Sue s in retirement may continue to be instruments for serving the common good, with time for leisure, for new growth and service. Give grace to your servants, O Lord. Grant Mother Sue, as she leaves the accomplishments and trials of this congregation, a sense of gratitude for those who have shared this journey, both at St. James s, in this community, the Church, and the world. Give grace to your servant, O Lord. Give her thankfulness for all who have supported her life s journey, as well as for all those who have shared in her spiritual journey, that she may continually use insights from her path to help others know and serve God. Give grace to your servant, O Lord. Grant her wisdom and understanding in the ordering of retirement life, that she may be blessed with a positive, hopeful perspective, so that future years may be valued and productive, in service to you. Give grace to your servants, O Lord. Give forgiveness to us and to Mother Sue for all things done and left undone in our common life. Give grace to your people, O Lord. Grant to the people of St. James Episcopal Church the vision to continue on God s journey, to fulfill the 10

11 mission of St. James, that all people might know God and love each other through Jesus Christ our Lord. : : : Give grace to your people, O Lord. Grant to this congregational family the awareness of those who have gone before us, a thankfulness for their abiding faith, and a willingness to ever seek the kingdom of God, both in this place and beyond its walls. THE ENDING OF A PASTORAL RELATIONSHIP : On the first day of January 2011, I was inducted by Bishop Brookhart as rector of St. James Episcopal Church. I have, with God s help and to the best of my abilities, exercised this trust, accepting its privileges and responsibilities. After prayer and careful consideration, it now seems to me that I should leave this charge and retire, and I publicly state that my tenure as rector of St. James Episcopal Church ends December 1, (The Minister may, if desired, briefly state her plans for the future.) Do you, the people of St. James, recognize and accept the conclusion of our pastoral relationship? We do. The departing Minister and the congregation then say together the following prayer Together we pray O God, you have bound us together for a time as priest and people to work for the advancement of your kingdom in this place: We give you humble and hearty thanks for the ministry which we have shared in these years now past. Silence We thank you for your patience with us despite our blindness and slowness of heart. We thank you for your forgiveness and mercy in the face of our many failures. Silence Especially we thank you for your never-failing presence with us through these years, and for the deeper knowledge of you and of each other which we have attained. 11

12 Silence Silence PEACE We thank you for those who have been joined to this part of Christ s family through baptism. We thank you for opening our hearts and minds again and again to your Word, and for feeding us abundantly with the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of your Son. Now, we pray, be with those who leave and with us who stay; and grant that all of us, by drawing ever nearer to you, may always be close to each other in the communion of your saints. All this we ask for the sake of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Welcome to worship in the name of the Creator who paints autumn leaves, the Savior who teaches us to warm hearts with love, and the Spirit who guides us through life s seasons. Amen. 13 Because in Jesus Christ our Lord you have received us as your sons and daughters, made us citizens of your kingdom, and given us the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth. We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God, source of life abundant. From before time you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways. But we rebelled against you, and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with Saints and Angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing (say): SANCTUS S 130 Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. To deliver us from the power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you looked with favor upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and bear a son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news to the poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we were heedless of his call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon the cross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you. On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks to you, gave it to them, and said: Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. 13

14 Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice. Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood of Christ. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new creation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made. In the fullness of time bring us, with all your saints, from every tribe and language and people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.
