Children s Liturgy at The Cathedral will take place during the 10am Mass every Sunday from this weekend. 4 Today: The message of today s gospel is a very simple one. It is something that I can understand, even if I cannot fully understand its importance. I belong to Jesus in a much more real way than I belong to a family or to a church. I must personally renew my commitment to him. The words I use are not important. Jesus can read the heart, even if I choose not to use words. A worthwhile life is one that is spent in the service of others. It is about being a life-giving person. I cannot give what I haven t got. Make me a channel of your peace. My Christian vocation has much more to do with getting heaven down here, that getting into heaven myself. If Jesus died to get me to heaven, I don t have to concern myself too much with that. There are people around me, however, who are living in hell, and it is my vocation to bring heaven to them. Where there is hunger, let me bring your food. Where there is despair let me bring your hope. In the course of our ordinary humdrum existence, it is very easy for us to lose sight of the vision. We are part of the Divinity, grafted onto God, drawing on his life and his love. If God is for us, who can be against us?... Nothing is impossible with God. Having given us Christ Jesus, will the Father not surely give us everything else? A life without reflection is a life that s not worth living. I have plenty to reflect on from today s gospel. Prayer flows very naturally from reflection. In the course of the reflection, God speaks to me. Prayer is not so much me speaking to God who doesn t hear, but God speaking to me who may not listen. (MB) A sincere thank you to everyone who had holy Mass said or sent sympathy cards and letters on the sad loss of my son-in-law Richard Lynn who dies tragically a month ago. My daughter Janine and granddaughter Sophie now live in Birmingham. Monsignor David Forde married Richard and Janine 20 years ago in Our Lady s Chapel. Lighting Project for the Cathedral ~ Phase II We have received The Faculty to being work on Phase II of the Lighting Project. We have a meeting with the Architect (Peter Rogan) and the contractors on Monday 30th April and we hope to have a start date shortly afterwards. We still need to find the shortfall of 80, Donations are invited towards this project - large or small, would be greatly appreciated. 5 The Catholic Faith As You Have Never Seen It Before Our Sunday evening gatherings for young adults (18-35) started again last Sunday and will take place following the 6pm Mass. There will be supper at 7pm in the McMahon Room and it s a great chance to meet other young Catholics in and around the city. Learn what Catholics believe and why. Discover the full meaning of the faith. We will be looking at: the Eucharist, Mary, the Church, Prayer and the Communion of Saints over the next few weeks. So do come and join us, bring a friend and check out Nottingham Catholic Young Adults Group on Facebook or contact the office. Meeting for Readers takes place on Monday 30th April after the 6.15pm Mass in the Chapter Room. It would be helpful if as many as possible could attend. Thank you. 6 Diocesan History We are very proud to offer you the opportunity of owning a copy of GOOD NEWS FOR THE EAST MIDLANDS, an account of the background to, and the story of, the Diocese of Nottingham. Canon Anthony Dolan, a retired priest and former archivist of our diocese, has, together with many other contributors, compiled this book which contains more than 360 pages of information and photographs about our parishes, religious communities, schools, pilgrimage sites and martyrs. A limited number of copies of the book are available to purchase and are available from Cathedral House at a reduced price of We hope you will enjoy reading this fascinating book, the first history of our diocese to be published since Cathedral Red Missio Boxes If you have a Missio Box, could you please bring it in for emptying as soon as possible please. Cathedral Art and Craft Group a short informal meeting for all those who have expressed an interest in being involved in the group will take place on Monday 30th April at 11am in the Ellis Room. Beauvale Diocesan Pilgrimage takes place on Sunday 6th May at 3.15pm. The Mass will be celebrated in honour of Saint John Houghton and St Robert Lawrence, the first Martyrs of the Reformation, both formerly of Beauvale Priory. Neophyte Mass Bishop Patrick will be celebrating Mass at 3pm on Sunday 13th May at the Cathedral for those who have recently been received into the Catholic Church. All are welcome. 7 Becoming a Catholic ~ Journey of Faith We are now looking ahead to this coming autumn s Journey of Faith Programme and invite any adult non-catholic or non-christian, or Catholic adult who has not received the Sacraments, or is interested knowing more about the Catholic Church and perhaps becoming a member, to contact a member of the Clergy. Baptism Course The dates for the next Baptism Course have been set for: - 21st and 28th July The session will start at 10.30am to 12.00noon and will be held in St Barnabas Cathedral Hall. Parents or expectant parents wishing their child to be baptised are asked to complete and return to Cathedral House a Baptism Application Form as soon as possible. This programme is designed for parents of children up to the age of 6 years only. Please note, it is customary to make an offering towards the upkeep of the Cathedral and donations should be sent in with the application form. Weddings 2018 Any couples who are hoping to get married this year, in either of our two parishes, are required in the first instance to make an appointment with the Cathedral Dean. Diocesan Law requires a minimum of six months notice prior to the wedding. This enables all the necessary arrangements and preparations to be made. All couples without exception have to attend the Marriage Preparation Course. Wedding Fees for 2018 The Cathedral: St Augustine s: Preparation of a couple marrying elsewhere: Non-Resident Clergyman Officiating: The above fees include a stole fee of shared between the resident Clergy. Fees should normally be paid three months before the wedding. However, if, for any reason money is a major problem, the fee will be renegotiated to meet your needs. A fee for the Marriage Preparation Course is paid directly to Marriage Care on the day of the course. Please note, the fees do not include for flowers, organists, musicians, or singers. Please label all items for the attention of Valerie Black. ROLLING BACK THE CLOUDS ~ Could you support a prisoner on America s Death Row? Perhaps you think you couldn t but come along and find out more there ll be plenty of time for questions. Two repeated talks by Ruth Shelton on writing to prisoners on America s Death Row, the work of Lifelines, a charity which befriends prisoners by writing letters and a look at the context of the death penalty in America. Both sessions will take strictly no longer 1 1/2 hrs but feel free to drop in. The sessions take place at St. Peter s Coffee Room on 15 th May 2018 or St Peter s Seminar Room on 25 th May Both at St. Peter s Church Centre next to Marks and Spencer s (up the church steps and turn right) in Nottingham City Centre. Nottingham Citizens Accountability Assembly ~ Thursday 10th May, 7.00pm at the Albert Hall.
