Please come and join us. St Augustine s First Reconciliation Please remember our children in your prayers as they make their First Confessions this coming week. Stations of the Cross at St Augustine s Each Friday during Lent the Stations of the Cross will take place at 7pm. In recent years less people have attended this Devotion. The subject matter is not easy, however a following of the Way of The Cross during Lent can help us experience in a deeper way, the joy of Easter, the hope that lies at the heart of human experience. The Panthers Social Club meets at St Augustine's Hall every Thursday from 7.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. Anyone over the age of 18 with any disability is welcome. If personal care is needed then members should be accompanied by a carer. The club provides the opportunity to make new friends and participate in a variety of games and activities. For further details please contact Marian on St Augustine s Red Missio Boxes If you have a Missio Box, could you please bring it in for emptying to either Deacon Anthony Sullivan at St Augustine's or hand to Bernadette Gabb on or before week ending 5th / 6th April. If you do not have a box and would like one, there are spare boxes available at the back of the church or please ask for one. Thank you for your support. St Augustine s Cleaning Rota We still need more volunteers to join the church cleaning rota. This would involve being on the rota about every six weeks, but might be less frequent if a lot of people volunteer. Please give your name and phone number to Carol or Diane.

4 The Cathedral is a place for quiet prayer and reflection - all are most welcome to take advantage of this oasis of peace in our busy world. Today: The fig tree in Jesus story was a very privileged tree because it was planted in a very special place vineyard. Yet in spite of this the tree is barren. Nevertheless, it was given another chance. The fig tree stands for Israel planted in the Lord s vineyard. Its barren state symbolised the barren state of Israel before God. Jesus began his mission with a call to repentance: Repent, for the kingdom of Heaven is at hand. Today, through the voice of the Church, the same call is addressed to us. The call to repentance is at the heart of the Gospel. Jesus addressed it, not just to sinners, but also to good people. In fact, to all without exception. But you may ask: how can this be that good people should need to repent? In the case of so-called good people, for them their failing consists in the good they fail to do this is the main trust of the parable the fig tree is found wanting, not because it produced poisonous fruit, but because it failed to produce any figs at all. What is the fig tree for if not to produce figs? Christians rarely ask themselves the question: What have I failed to do? The call to repentance is not merely a call to turn away from evil, but a call to produce the fruits of good living. That is why it is relevant for everyone. Jesus call to repentance disturbs us, and we don t like to be disturbed. We want our quiet life, a life that contain a lot of selfishness. We may not be guilty of great evil, yet we could be very selfish, very demanding, very inconsiderate. This Lent we are being called from being self-centred, to become other-centred and God-centred. Let those who think they are safe beware lest they fall no one is so fallen that he/she can t be redeemed. (MB) Stations of the Cross Fr Malachy will assist with the Stations of the Cross this weekend - Sunday in the Cathedral at 3.00pm. The Stations will be taken from Everyone s Way of the Cross by Clarence Enzler - it is a beautiful presentation which will help us to get a better understanding of what LENT is about. Please come and join us. Planned Giving The Gift Aid boxes for 2019/2020 are ready for collection from the back of the Cathedral. If anyone would like a set of envelopes or if anyone is interested in signing up for Gift Aid or Standing Orders, please speak to Canice after Mass or contact a member of the Clergy. Standing Orders enable you to pay a monthly amount to the Cathedral and saves you the inconvenience of having to scrape around for money every weekend for the collection. 5 'Progress Report Fr Marcus says that he's recovering well from his recent operation. It will a few weeks yet before he might be able to return to the altar but he is aiming for Holy Week and Easter. In the meantime, he wants to thank Frs Malachy, John and Biju not least for administering the Sacrament of the Sick, then thanks for the fine work of a great surgeon, and thank you to you all for your prayers, good wishes and cards - our mantle piece and shelves are overflowing with them! Deo gratias! Adult Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation These sessions are designed for adults who wish to receive the Sacrament of Confirmed at Pentecost. The first session will start on Wednesday 8 th May 2019, in the Ellis Room, Cathedral Hall. Please contact Alison at the Cathedral Office for more information and to give her your details. It is important that you are able to commit to attending all the sessions and, can produce evidence of your Baptism as a child or as an adult. Discernment weekend for men aged 30 to 55: The Beda College in Rome is running a discernment weekend for men between the ages of 30 and 55 from Friday 30 th August to Sunday 1 st September It takes place at St Bueno s Spirituality Centre in North Wales. The weekend is hoping to reach men who are not already officially in touch with their diocese and is a first step for those who may be exploring the possibility of priestly vocation in later life. 6 Cake Sales The next cake stall will take place next Sunday 31st March following the and 11.15am Masses. All proceeds are to the Youth Choir when they go to Lourdes and Notre Dame. During Lent there will be extra opportunities to celebrate the Sacrament Of Reconciliation, Confessions at the Cathedral on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will commence at 12noon. Stations of the Cross will be celebrated by the children of St Joseph s School at 12.30pm on Fridays at the Cathedral during term time, and there will be Stations of the Cross each Sunday afternoon in the Cathedral at 3.00pm. God Calls Lent talks on Vocations take place in the Sacred Heart Church, Carlton. Come and meet Sr Katrina and hear her inspirational story. Then on Monday 1st April Vocation To Lay Ministry ~ Angela Gillespie and Tom Baptist will be sharing with us their role and ministry. Both dates start at 7pm pm. All welcome. 40 Days For Life started on Ash Wednesday and will finish on Palm Sunday, April 14th. It s not too late to join with other Christians for 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. You re also invited to stand and peacefully pray for an hour or two during a 40- day vigil at the Queens Medical Centre from 6am to 6pm. McGuinness Room Painting The repainting of the McGuinness Room in the Cathedral Hall is set to take place next Saturday 30th. St. John Paul II Walking Pilgrimage - 1st - 4th August 2019 Come and walk 50 miles for the intention of the New Evangelisation of England and Wales with the Dominican Sisters of St Joseph. Going from Bury St Edmunds to Walsingham, each day we will celebrate Mass, pray Morning and Evening Prayer and the rosary together, and hear talks. Please note that pilgrims must be physically capable of walking 20 miles in one day. Cost: 90 per head, 60 for students/unemployed and 50 per head for families. 7 Catholic Creative Writing If you are a poet or story teller interested in working towards a publication to mark the 175 th year of the Cathedral of the Nottingham Diocese as part of the Graham Greene event, please get in touch and help make Catholic Creative Writing happen. The first session takes place on 6 th April 2019 in the Ellis Room, St Barnabas Cathedral Hall: In search of a Catholic voice in poetry: Looking at contemporary poetry/prose. Part One (first hour): Readings from and discussion of recent Catholic (and non -Catholic) creative writing. Is the notion of Catholic literature simply sectarian or something deeper? Part Two (second hour): Readings and discussion of work produced by participants; writing a poem individually; and together: a partly fun activity to see what challenges contemporary Catholic writers face. Non Catholics and both experienced and inexperienced writers are welcome. The only requirement is an openness to the creative possibilities in the Catholic literary tradition.
