4 Today: Thanks to the writer of the Gospels we have the Words of Jesus with us to this very day. They are there to teach us, to guide us, to inspire us, to comfort us, and to challenge us. But the question today may be: How well do we listen to the Lord s words, and how hard do we try to practise them in our lives? During the time of my education I heard a lot of things most of these I will forget in time indeed, I ve already forgotten a great deal of them. But there is one thing which one professor said that I will never forget. He said, Love keeps a low profile. I know it sounds so very simple, but somehow, it went straight to my heart, and has stayed there ever since. Love keeps a low profile. Words are very important and very powerful. Once uttered, they take on a life of their own, for good or ill. They can bring a blessing or a curse, healing or wounding, life or death. Words can continue to harm us or help us for many years after they have been spoken. Hence, we should be careful how we use words. When we are angry, it is better to remain silent. Words spoken in anger can cause deep hurt and make reconciliation very difficult. Choosing life instead of death, a blessing instead of a curse, often starts by choosing to remain silent, or being careful to choose words that open the way to healing. As one person puts it: Sometimes loving others means keeping quiet and letting them be. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. We would do well to build the house of our lives on his words. (MB) World Day of the Poor In this year s message, Pope Francis reflects on Psalm 34:7, This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him. He challenges us to use the World Day of the Poor as an opportunity to make an examination of conscience and consider whether we truly do hear the cry of the poor. Throughout salvation history, God answers the cries of the poor and shares in their suffering. His response is always a saving and healing act. In the World Day of the Poor, we join God in responding to the poor and ensuring our brothers and sisters in need do not feel alone or abandoned. Pope Francis says that to hear and respond to their cries, we must be in relationship and get to know people who are poor. He encourages parishes around the world to join in solidarity with people who are poor in their communities through a communal action, like praying together or sharing a meal. May we take this opportunity to thank you all for the donations you give throughout the year to Emmanuel House, the Foodbanks and also to those who give their time to help with the Sash Kitchen once a month. Health and Safety Notice A few of the floor tiles to the left of the sanctuary in the Cathedral were recently damaged during the lighting works. These tiles are being renewed on Monday, so please be careful around this area if you are visiting the Cathedral on this day. Thank you. Feast of Christ The King Next Sunday, 25th November is the Feast of Christ the King and Youth Sunday. This is a time when we celebrate the contribution of young people to the life and mission of the Catholic Church; it is also the day when we thank God for the many graces and blessings received during the year. There will be a special Mass at 6pm and we invite all students from all our Universities to attend. Refreshments will be available following Mass in the Cathedral Hall. All are welcome. St Augustine Loose Plate Envelopes S/Orders Total Parish Finances Last Week Cathedral 1, , Thank you for your generosity to the work of the Church! In your Will, please remember your Church. Willson House Car Park Our contractors will commence work to mend the bollards this Tuesday and advise that the car park will be out of use until at least Friday. We are hopeful that the car park will be open by next weekend but the contractors will keep us updated of any delays to this during the week. November - a time for remembering Here in the Cathedral and at St Augustine s we will have a Novena, please complete the form by adding your loved ones names and place it in the envelope provided - these envelopes can be found at the back of the churches. All names will be placed on the altar for the celebration of Mass and will be the Intentions for the Mass during the time of the Novena. (MB) RCIC The RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children) commences on the 19th November at 5pm in the Ellis Room. The RCIC is a program for children age 7 years to 15 years who have not been baptised and is open to both parishioners and non-parishioners who wish to prepare for the Sacraments. Whether your family is just entering the church, is returning after time away, have decided as a family to delay the children s sacramental preparation, or any other circumstance, all are welcome. Contact the Cathedral Office for more information. Weddings 2019 Any couples who are hoping to get married next year, in either of our two parishes, are required in the first instance to make an appointment with the Cathedral Dean. Diocesan Law requires a minimum of six months notice prior to the wedding. This enables all the necessary arrangements and preparations to be made. All couples without exception have to attend the Marriage Preparation Course. Prayer for the Sick Father, your Son accepted our sufferings to teach us the virtue of patience in human illness. Hear the prayers we offer for our sick brethren. May all who suffer pain, illness or disease realize that they have been chosen to be saints and know that they are joined to Christ in his suffering for the salvation of the world. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. 6 Denis Dowling RIP We have just heard that Denis, a former parishioner of the Cathedral, has died recently in Germany. He was a power of strength at the Cathedral many years ago. Please keep Denis in your prayers. May the Lord reward him abundantly with his love, mercy and generosity.
