COME AND SEE ~ Saint Augustine s Parish will be soon celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation. This wonderful Sacrament fulfils the promise which Jesus made on the night before he died, when he said: I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper, who will stay with you for ever. (John 14: 16) This helper, the Holy Spirit, gives us the strength, the courage and the love to live as Jesus taught us, and so find the peace and the joy which God alone can give. Our parish extends an invitation to any young person, aged twelve or older, who wishes to be confirmed, to share in our Parish Preparation for Confirmation. An information evening for those young people and their families will be held on Monday 8 th January 2018 at Saint Augustine s Parish Hall from 7.00pm to 8.30pm. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated at Saint Augustine s on April 26 th, We look forward to welcoming you at this very important meeting. 4 The Cathedral is a place for quiet prayer and reflection - all are most welcome to take advantage of this oasis of peace in our busy world. In the liturgy leading up to Christmas two women figure prominently, Mary and Elizabeth. Both were empty, Elizabeth was sterile and Mary a virgin. In the midst of such emptiness both conceived, not by their own power or that of their husbands, but with God s power. He filled their emptiness, Elizabeth with John the Baptist, Mary s with Jesus. Christmas is a time when many of us make contact with our emptiness. A child leaves home, a loved one dies, we are confronted with the empty chair, the empty space and are left with a feeling of emptiness. Into this emptiness God comes, he comes to fill us up. Behold I stand at the door and knock. the door is the human heart. He comes in so many ways to fill our emptiness, a word of comfort, a reconciliation, the rediscovery of a lost friendship: he comes to us in Word and Sacrament if we would only listen to his voice and let him in. The trouble is that so often we are too busy filling ourselves that there is no room to let God in, there is no room in the inn. The pre-christmas slogan is. so many shopping days left. Our time and our lives are so filled with shopping, running here and there, planning, decorating, worrying and we are so exhausted by Christmas that the slogan now becomes: How did you get over the Christmas? There is no room for God in all of this. God cannot get into fullness, only our emptiness, like the emptiness of Bethlehem, the emptiness of Mary, the emptiness of Elizabeth. Strange isn t it, that when Bethlehem was filled with the fullness of God on that first Christmas, the first to get the message were the shepherds and the wise men. The shepherds watching their flocks by night found God in silence and emptiness: the wise men sensitive to the emptiness of human knowledge saw a star and using their God-given talents were led to the one who created the stars. Simeon too got the message. He studied the sacred writings not as an exegete but in search of the Christ and found him in that never-to-be forgotten encounter in the temple (MB) To all who have helped to make our Advent so wonderful and for those who have helped with our Christmas preparations: we would like to express a huge THANK YOU. We, as a community, are most fortunate to have such a vast range of people all helping, working, encouraging and supporting each other to build community. In the past week, in particular, it has been a delight to see many people coming together in so many varied ways. Thanks to all and well done. The Clergy wish to thank you all for your kind wishes, gifts and Christmas Offering the collection taken on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day is your offering to the Parish Clergy. 5 Cathedral Crib Please do take time over the Christmas period to visit the Crib in the Cathedral and St Augustine s. Cathedral Lighting On 3rd January work will be commencing on Phase One of a new lighting scheme for the Cathedral. We managed to get a grant from the FIRST WORLD WAR CENTENARY CATHEDRAL REPAIR FUND for 75,000.00, but Phase One works will cost almost 88, Phase One works cover the main area (both Nave and Side Aisles) and is quite extensive. We have been advised that most of the work will take place during the week and the weekends should not be affected. During this period temporary lighting will be set up around the Cathedral. I know that many of you will be pleased to hear about the lighting scheme but Phase Two will have to be delayed until we find the funding. If anyone would like to help with the shortfall, ie 13,000.00, then please speak with Fr Malachy. Prayers For Vocations Saturday morning in the Cathedral Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 9.15am. Children's Liturgy - Helpers Request at the am Mass at the Cathedral we are looking to have Children's liturgy every week - to enable us to do this we need a team of volunteers to lead and assist in sessions on a rota basis. We ideally need 1 leader and 1 helper per week - so I would be very grateful if you could consider volunteering. Please contact me on Thank you Eva Kerry. Eph pha tha Be Opened A Service to thank the Lord for all the blessings received in 2017 and to welcome 2018 in hope, love and faith. Praise & Worship, Eucharistic Celebration, Adoration, Healing Ministry and Laying on of Hands takes place on Sunday 31 st December 2017 from 5pm to 8pm at Our Lady s RC Church Bulwell, NG6 9ES. All welcome. The RCIA has now finished for Christmas and will restart on Sunday 7th January 2018 at 4.00pm. We wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and encourage you all to make it a Holy and Special Christmas this year by attending one of the Masses on Christmas Day, especially the Vigil of Readings and Midnight Mass. Marriage Preparation Course 2018 All couples intending to marry in 2018, and have booked a date with a member of the Clergy, should now have received a letter informing them of the dates and times of the Marriage Preparation Course. The dates are either the 27th January: 24th March; 21st April or 16th June, all 10am to 5pm. Any couple who have not received a letter, or any couple considering marrying next year is asked to contact the Cathedral Office as soon as possible. Missio would like to thank the parishioners of St Barnabas Cathedral for their generous gift of which will help share the peace and love of Christ with people in South Sudan and other war torn countries. White Flower Appeal - the Society for the Protection of Unborn children (SPUC) will be holding its annual appeal on the weekend of the 6th/7th January SPUC is currently campaigning to stop the decriminalisation of abortion, which means taking abortion outside the law. This is the most dangerous threat to unborn children and their mothers in decades. Please be as generous as you can to help us defeat this latest attack on unborn babies and their mothers, and to stop abortion getting even worse in this country by decriminalisation. Cathedral First Confession/First Holy Communion and Confirmation Classes 2017 Classes will start for First Confession/First Holy Communion on Wednesday 28th February finishing on 30th May 2018 from 5.00pm to 6.30pm for children in School Year 3 or above, and Confirmation will start on Wednesday 14th March 2018 finishing 16th May from 7pm to 8.30pm for children in School Year 8 and above. All children who would like to receive these Sacraments are welcome regardless of what school you attend. Hospitals urgent message. If you have a relative or a friend goes into QMC or City, please inform the Chaplaincy Department either directly, through ward staff or via your parish priest and request a visit, specifically from a Catholic Chaplain. You will then be able to receive Holy Communion or Sacrament of the Sick in hospital, go to Mass at QMC or receive a simple pastoral visit. Do not assume that your parish priest or the Catholic chaplains know you are in hospital. Baptism Course The dates for the next Baptism Course have been set for: - 3rd and 10th February The sessions will start at 10.30am to 12.00noon and will be held in the Cathedral Hall. Parents or expectant parents wishing their child to be baptised are asked to complete and return to Cathedral House a Baptism Application Form as soon as possible. This course is designed for parents of children up to the age of 6 years only. Bible Reflection Group has now finished until the 11th January. Holocaust Memorial Day 2018 takes place at the Nottingham Council House on Friday 26th January from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. Light refreshments will be offered after the Service until 4pm. All welcome. Faith in Action Gifts For The Poor Thank you to all who continue to contributed to our weekly collection. We support these charities regularly: Emmanuel House ~ Food, Clothes and Toiletries. Jericho Road ~ Women s Toiletries NG7 Food Bank ~ Food and Household Cleaning Products We also support other worthy causes on an ad hoc basis. The Winter Shelter runs between the winter months of November to March providing approximately beds each night to rough-sleeping individuals. Individual needs are assessed at Emmanuel House where individuals, if necessary, are referred to this temporary accommodation provided in local church halls. The Nottingham winter shelter needs volunteers to help us at the shelter.
