Pastoral Outreach at St Augustine's Pope Francis is urging Catholic Parishes to have a 'missionary' ethos and to 'go forth' into their local communities. 4 Today: Some year ago now, there was a family that had fallen on hard times when the family business failed, and they lost everything. The neighbours were very sympathetic, because the children were embarrassed in school after they had moved into a mobile home, and had to sell their house and business premises. The parents decided that they would move to America, where nobody would know them, and try and start again. The family managed to scrap enough money together to get tickets for the boat to New York. Since the family had never been away from home before they had no idea how to prepare for such a voyage. They bought bread and cheese, and packed a few boxes with sandwiches. They gathered together in a single cabin on the boat and had no desire to mix with others, in case of finding themselves embarrassed or out of their depth. On the first, second, third, fourth and fifth days they ate the sandwiches. From then on, the sandwiches began to go bad. The cheese and the bread had blue-mould on them, and they began to smell. By now they were all in a bad way. They were sick, they were hungry, and deeply discouraged. With a day or two to go before arriving in New York, one little lad begged his dad for a few pennies, so that he could go on deck and buy a few sweets. The dad gave him the pennies and off he went. He didn t return, and, after about an hour, the father was forced to go up on the deck to look for him. When he came on deck, he was total amazed by what he saw. There were long tables, surrounded by people, and they were all eating a beautiful dinner. There in the midst of them was his son, with a plate of turkey, ham, potatoes and lots of fresh vegetables in front of him, together with a large beaker of Coke. The father came up behind his son and whispered, Why did you do this? You know rightly we cannot afford this. The young lad s eyes light up as he replied, Dad, we could have had this every day - it was all included in the tickets! When we enter heaven (as I hope we will) and look around. Jesus could say, I never mentioned sandwiches once in the whole gospel, but I often spoke of being invited to the feast. (MB) Donation Received We would like to acknowledge with grateful thanks a donation of towards the new lights. The Donor Gift-Aided the donation making the donation worth We still have about 19, to find for the renewal of the lights. The electricians have now finished in the Cathedral. We have had nothing but positive comments regarding the lights - I am sure you would agree it s a job well done. (MB) Broadway Cinema A new film about Pope Francis called Pope Francis: A Man Of His Word will be shown at the Broadway Cinema in Nottingham from Friday 10th August to Thursday 16th August. It has very good reviews. God bless this house: The numbers remain small, but we are hearing a buzz about home blessings. Once standard in every parish, the blessings were given when the Parish Priest or curate called at the house. Today, they are being done by appointment but are growing slowly. The priest calls on the home, visits with the family, hears their concerns, and prays with them. Then, he blesses the family and the home. Try it! it s bound to strengthen home-church ties. A Holy Water Dispenser is in St Hugh s Chapel at the back of the Cathedral. Good Catholic Practice is that Holy Water should be available in our homes.

5 The 32nd Rosary Rally takes place this year on the 26th August 2018 at Mount St Bernard Abbey, Leicestershire. You are warmly invited to join in the Rally to pray for World Peace and Young People. The Principle Celebrant is Fr Denis Geoghegan o.c.s.o. and the day will commence at 2pm with concelebrated Mass, followed by picnic and refreshments in the lovely grounds of the monastery. Resuming at 4pm the second part of the Rally will consist of the crowning of a statue of Our Lady, a procession with Rosary and hymns with a choir, followed by the Blessed Sacrament, blessing of the sick and concluding with Benediction. Bring a folding chair or stool. If you have attended the Rallies before, please note the change of venue and times. Mount St Bernard Abbey is situated on the Oaks Road near Coalville (Postcode LE67 5UL). About 5 miles from Junction 23 of the M1 and off the A512 in the direction of Ashby, signposted from Shepshed. Bible Reflection Group meet each week in the Ellis Room from 6pm to 7.30pm and this will continue over the summer. 6 Walsingham Summer Festival ~ 23rd - 27th August 2018 The biggest young Catholic Summer Festival, is a 5-day camping festival run by young people for young people. It is about us discovering who we are as we come face-to-face with the God who made us, knows us and loves us. Becoming a Catholic ~ Journey of Faith We are now looking ahead to this coming autumn s Journey of Faith Programme and invite any adult non-catholic or non-christian, or Catholic adult who has not received the Sacraments, or is interested knowing more about the Catholic Church and perhaps becoming a member, to contact a member of the Clergy. RCIC We are also looking ahead to the start of the RCIC (Rite of Christian Initiation for Children) this autumn. The RCIC is a program for children age 7 years to 15 years who have not been baptised and is open to both parishioners and nonparishioners who wish to prepare for the Sacraments. Whether your family is just entering the church, is returning after time away, have decided as a family to delay the children s sacramental preparation, or any other circumstance, all are welcome. Weddings 2019 Any couples who are hoping to get married next year, in either of our two parishes, are required in the first instance to make an appointment with the Cathedral Dean. Diocesan Law requires a minimum of six months notice prior to the wedding. This enables all the necessary arrangements and preparations to be made. All couples without exception have to attend the Marriage Preparation Course. Adoremus: National Eucharistic Congress, Liverpool 7th- 9th September 2018 The Bishops of England and Wales are holding a National Eucharistic Pilgrimage and Congress in Liverpool in September Eucharistic Congresses are gatherings of clergy, religious and laity which promote an awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Church.
