St Augustine s First Holy Communion Programme The First Holy Communion programme at St Augustine's begins on 12th February 2019 with the Enrolment Mass on the previous Sunday, 10th February. If your child does not attend St Augustine's school and you wish him/her to take part in the programme, please speak to Sr Philomena or Diane Flynn. Your child must be baptised and must be Year 3 level. St Augustine s Cake Sale There will be cake stall at St Augustine s on Sunday 3rd February following the 11am. Donations of cakes, homemade or shop bought will be gratefully received. Proceeds towards the Roof Fund. Legacies Most of the running costs of your Parish and of the Diocese and of the national Bishops Conference costs are covered by the regular collections which are taken at the weekend Masses. However, there are from time to time substantial one-off costs. For example, the boiler in the Church may suddenly and unexpectedly need replacing. A building might need substantial roof repair. Facilities for the disabled may need to be provided, and there is the ever present need to bring our buildings up to date with heath and safety legislation. Until such time as these funds are needed by the Parish, they are deposited centrally and are invested. If you would be kind enough to consider a legacy to the Church in your Will, it is a tax advantage as a Charity.

4 Today: It is very important that each of us should have a sense of purpose and pattern to our Christian living. When I set out on a journey, it is necessary to have a definite idea of where I intend going, and the destination, at the end of the journey. Signposts point the way: they do not compel me to travel that way. Have you ever come across a signpost that has been deliberately turned in the wrong direction by someone with a perverted sense of humour? As a Christian, I have very clear and definite signposts, and I always have the option of following or not following. Sometimes, because of road-works, I encounter a detour. When I follow the detour, my whole attention is given to every sign, until I get back on the road on which I wish to travel. On following my Christian vocation, it is vital that I maintain a constant reflection on where I am going, why I am going in that direction, and that, I have a definite pattern to my journey. Many of us carry some form of personal identification, membership cards, or work-place name tags. Get a copy of your baptism certificate, which can easily be obtained from the church in which you were baptised. Put it in your wallet or purse or even your handbag, and carry it on your person. Let it be a constant reminder, and let it evoke a whole new YES every time you see it. A friend of mine vouches for the truth of the following incident. He was travelling down the country towards Dublin when his journey brought him along some by-roads, where the signposts were few and far between. After a while, he was unsure if he was on the right road, so he decided to ask the first person he saw. Eventually, he came across a farmer, driving his cows home for milking. He stopped the car, and asked him if he was on the right road to Somewhere, just to give the place a name. The farmer told him that he certainly was on the right road. My friend expressed his thanks, and was about to move forward when the farmer added, in a very nonchalant way, You re on the right road, but you are going in the wrong direction! Please take a few minutes out today after Mass or perhaps in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel or maybe, even at home, just to be with God. You will find it very rewarding. Maybe, you could reflect during that time on the Lord s prayer taking each line slowly, one line at a time, and as you reflect, recognise that you too, like Jesus, are a child of God. (MB) Pax Christi ~ Peace Sunday In his 2019 World Peace Day message, which has the theme Good politics serves peace, Pope Francis invites us to begin our New Year with a concern for the future of life and the planet, of the youngest and the weakest. Internationally thousands are displaced and suffer as a result of war, yet the global arms trade continues unabated and people profit from war. We hear of flashpoints of potential and real violence: Russia, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gaza situations often brought about because of bad politics. Our own country is divided over Brexit and people are hurting and we need to explore better ways of reaching out to one another and finding ways to rebuild trust and community. All of this calls for Good politics and the skills and the tools of peacemakers. If you would like to support the work of Pax Christi, there are envelopes available at the back of the church. Children s Liturgy takes place at the Cathedral during the 10am Sunday Mass. Second collection next weekend, please see page 7 for details. If you make an extra contribution (as well as coming to Mass!), then please come and help celebrate the difference we all make to the life of the parish. Maybe you are in a prayer group, or volunteer for social action, are a catechist, or one of the army of people who make our church building and liturgy so beautiful every week, you and your family are invited to the party. Next year s pilgrimage is a day longer than in recent years as we will begin travelling to Alencon to visit and have Mass at the place that St Therese was born. We will then follow in her footsteps with a guided visit to the Cathedral in Liseux, to the Basilica dedicated to St Therese, to the house where she grew up and to the museum and to the Carmel where she lived and died. For more info on both pilgrimages see Fr. John McCay. Telephone: Settlement Scheme for EU Citizens As you will be aware, Brexit is causing uncertainty and concern to many EU citizens living in the UK. Both clergy and laity alike share this uncertainty and concern. Apart from those who are uncertain about their future, others are inevitably in a state of ignorance and unaware that Brexit will affect their immigration status. In March 2019, the Government is due to launch a Settlement Scheme. All EU citizens living in the UK will be required to make an application if they wish to remain here after Brexit. However, Irish citizens will not be required to apply as their rights are separately protected. Many parishioners, priests and religious in our Dioceses will be affected. We urge the whole Catholic community to take up Pope Francis call to welcome, protect, promote and help to integrate everyone who has made their home here, with particular concern at present for all our European brothers and sisters. Please encourage anyone you know whom Brexit will affect, towards the official information on the Settlement Scheme at gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families. 7 Sick and Retired Priests Fund There will be a second collection next weekend, 19th/20th January, in aid of the Sick and Retired Priests Fund. Donations to this fund are to provide a sum for the priests of the Diocese who are currently in service so that an annual grant can be paid to them when they retire. They are also used to support these priests if they are sick and unable to work for any reason. These amounts are needed in addition to those collected by the Retired Priests Appeal which were primarily for those who have already retired and also in respect of past service for those currently working. Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel You are invited to wear the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The Scapular is a sign which has been approved by the Church for over 7 Centuries. It stands for the decision to follow Jesus like Mary; to be open to God and to His will; to be guided by faith, hope and love; to be close to the needs of people; to be praying at all times; discovering God present in all that happens around us. The Scapular introduces people into the family of Carmel and points to a renewed hope of encountering God in eternal life with the help of Mary's protection and intercession. If you would like to be enrolled or for further information please contact Jerzy Kulik by text on , or jerzy_kulik@msn.com Saint Barnabas Rosary Circle You are invited to join us in praying the Rosary in a meditative way every Friday after Evening Prayer in the Lady Chapel at 6:45pm.
