2 HELPING TO BUILD A FUTURE OF HOPE IN ETHIOPIA ON WORLD MISSION SUNDAY: Ethiopia first hit the headlines in the 1980s when a devastating famine caused the starvation of a million people. Thankfully, much has changed since then but despite the recent economic growth, Ethiopia remains one of the poorest countries in the world. World Mission Sunday is on 21 October Missio, the Pope s official charity for overseas mission, is appealing to the faithful of England and Wales to help build a future of hope in Ethiopia and around the world, through prayers and financial support. Even though the Catholic Church comprises only one per cent of a population of 100 million, many people benefit from the Church s mission in Ethiopia. The Menja people are one of the ethnic groups the Church is reaching out to. They are a people socially excluded and discriminated against due to their cultural traditions, which make them untouchable to the majority of the population in the south-eastern Kaffa region. This social exclusion means that Menja adults struggle to find work and earn an income. Simple things like feeding their families, having a home and providing clothing for their children is a daily struggle. The intolerance they face makes it very difficult for Menja children to go to school and improve their prospects for a better future. The Little Sisters of Jesus have made it their mission to overcome the marginalisation, discrimination and hurt endured by the Menja, by living alongside the Menja families. Sr Karlo is one of the Little Sisters of Jesus serving the Menja people. Everyone looks down upon the Menja people as poor, uneducated and socially untouchable, she says. We Sisters live among them and proclaim the Gospel by our living. We invite them to our house and welcome them as friends. They are not recognised as human beings by the people here... She says: I find Jesus in them; they are a kind people and have a lot to teach us. They are the ones who will decide about following Jesus. We are here only to show the power of His love. 3 NOVEMBER MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS: During the month of November, the Church remembers in prayer the souls of the faithful departed. It is the time of year, where many people quite rightly wish to have Mass celebrated for their departed loved ones. In order to accommodate the wishes of everyone, we will have the customary November List whereby parishioners can put the names that they wish to pray for which will be placed before the Altar. They will be remembered at all Masses in November as well as thirty dedicated Masses which will go beyond the month. Envelopes are available at the back of both churches, which you can also use to make your offering. They may be returned to the Presbytery or to Father Jean-Patrice or Father Jose. BLESSING OF GRAVES: will take place at 2.00pm on Saturday 3rd November at the Cemetery Chapel in Yeovil. After a short prayer service, there will be an opportunity to bless individual graves. SOCIAL COMMITTEE MEETING: Please note that there will be a Social Committee Meeting on Thursday 8th November at 7:00PM in the Presbytery. This is a follow on meeting to include all those who volunteered to help at the Marian Hall day back in June. This Committee will not be able to work without the aid and support of you, so please do come along. SPEAKER THIS SUNDAY FROM SHOEBOX APPEAL: This weekend we are delighted to welcome a return visit at the Sunday Masses from a speaker from Blysworth Care Shoebox Appeal. Last year our Parish donated over 40 shoeboxes which were sent to help improve the lives of needy children, young people and adults. The boxes last year were distributed in Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Pakistan, Romania, Serbia and Ukraine. This year marks the 25ᵗ year of the Blysworth Care Charity. YOUTH SYNOD: During October, Pope Francis is holding a synod in Rome on Youth, Faith and Vocational discernment. For the week of 15th - 21st October, our Diocese is entering into a time of focus and prayer for young people. 5 A FUTURE FULL OF HOPE - The Year of Mission Twenty Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus, in Mark s Gospel, reveals himself as the one who serves, as the one who reaches out in tenderness, as the one who lowers himself and empties himself out of love for others. It s Jesus words and his actions that reveal to the disciples the need, not so much to be the first or the greatest or the most powerful or the best or the most successful, but to encounter God in others and serve God, love God, in them. The disciples find that a hard lesson to learn but they have Jesus, not just to instruct them, but to show them. The cross reveals that service and that emptying in action. If we want to be considered great it s not because we have trampled on everyone to get where we feel we need to be; it s that we have loved and loved and loved giving everything. RECENT FUNDRAISING EVENT IN SOUTH PETHERTON: Mary Freeman writes 'The recent fundraising evening in South Petherton was a great success. Audrey presented an impressive talk telling of her astonishing escape from Burma. Everyone was amazed by what she had to say. With Gift Aid, a generous was raised for the Marian Hall fund in Yeovil.
