4 The Cathedral is a place for quiet prayer and reflection - all are most welcome to take advantage of this oasis of peace in our busy world. Today There was a programme some years ago on an American television station, where three or four people were given trolleys, in a supermarket, and given a certain time to fill them with groceries. The winner was decided as the one who had the highest bill at the checkout. A whistle blew, and the stampede began! They bumped into each other, items missed the trolley as they were thrown from a distance, and other items were discarded in favour of a more expensive item discovered. When the few minutes were up the whistle blew again, and they made their way to the checkout. As they waited to have their goodies checked, they looked into each other s trolleys, they saw things there that they had missed, they were annoyed with themselves at some of their stupid choices, etc. Now let me present that scenario again, except, this time we will give a trolley to a committed Christian. We have the whistle, the stampede, and everything all over again, except that our Christian friend is seen to act very differently. He strolls along at his ease. He puts a loaf of bread, some milk, butter and sugar into his trolley. He picks up an item that fell from one of the other trolleys and placed it on the shelf. The final whistle blows and they arrive at the checkout. Immediately, our friend gets everyone s attention. Their first reaction is a combination of mockery, puzzlement, and anger. One of them said, Who let you out? Did nobody tell you what this is all about? Why are you laid-back, and why didn t you go for it like the rest of us? The young man smiled, and replied, My Father owns the supermarket! Being out there in the world, giving Christian witness, is supposed to make a major difference. (MB) I Bid You A Fond Farewell After twelve years of service as a Permanent Deacon, it is now time to hang up my collar! The last three years have been spent here at the Cathedral and Liz and I, remember well, how warmly we were welcomed and have continued to be so. However, the Holy Spirit moves in mysterious ways, and I now feel that he is leading me into retirement. I will therefore be retiring from my ministry here at the Cathedral, at the beginning of September leaving you all in the safe hands of David, newly ordained Permanent Deacon here at St Barnabas. Please include us in your prayers - Deacon Stephen Rev Deacon David Kerry We extend our warmest congratulations to David Kerry, ordained a Deacon this weekend. His first responsibility will be to his wife Eva and their family. We look forward to Deacon David s ministry and we hope it will bring us all many blessings. Congratulations, well done and thank you. James Baxter, Sebastian Grab and Seamus O Looskan were also ordained to the Sacred Order of the Diaconate. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. Fr Kevin will be away on his holidays from this Sunday and will return on Monday 30th July. We wish him a happy and enjoyable time, and hope that he comes back well rested and refreshed. 5 40th Anniversary of Ordination Bishop Patrick will be the Celebrant at the 6pm Mass next weekend to mark his 40th Anniversary of Ordination to the Priesthood. He is not looking for any fuss, but just to celebrate with us this wonderful milestone of his Priestly Ministry. There will be a number of visiting Clergy and everyone is welcome to join us for the Mass. Cathedral Choir at Westminster Cathedral The Cathedral Choir will be singing a Mass at Wesminster Cathedral on Saturday 21st July 2018 at 6pm. Music will include two pieces specially composed for the choir 'Salvator Mundi' by Amy Summers and parts of the 'Missa Brevis' by Alex Patterson. They will also sing Rheinberger's 'Abendlied' and be joined by Fr Christopher Thomas who will be Celebrant for the Mass. All welcome. Children s Liturgy - due to holidays there will be no classes from July 29th and all of August. We start back on 2nd September. We are always looking for parents to help, so please speak to Fr Malachy or Eva Kerry for further details. We wish you all a very pleasant holiday period." Cathedral Lights During the time when the new lights were being commissioned, a few problems/difficulties arose - mainly to do with the fittings themselves. This means that the electricians will be back soon to complete the work. In many ways, this has helped us greatly, as we would appreciate any comments on the new lighting and adjustments can still be made. Over the last few weeks we have received donations of just over 13,400.00, many thanks to all concerned, and we have also received a Legacy from a former parishioner who kindly and generously has given the Cathedral just over 44, which we have put towards the Lighting Fund, leaving us to find about 22, (MB) Remember in your Prayers Please remember in your prayers the sick of our two parishes, those who have died recently and those whose anniversaries occur around this time. 6 Rummage Sale On Friday 20th July we will be holding a Rummage Sale in the Cathedral Hall from 10.30am onwards. The proceeds from this will go towards the making of 100 wreaths to go around the Cathedral to commemorate the ending of the First World War 100 years ago. Good quality items are needed to sell. Parish Administration Assistant The Catholic Diocese of Nottingham seeks to appoint an experienced and skilled individual to the role of Parish Admin Assistant in the Catholic Parish of Corpus Christi, Clifton and Our Lady & St Patrick s, The Meadows. Based at Corpus Christi, this post is for 15 hours a week, to be worked flexibly. This would suit someone with experience in administration. Closing date: 31 st July Juventutem Nottingham Meeting is a group for people aged between 16 and 36 who are interested in the traditional Latin Mass. The next meeting will be the 6:15pm Tridentine Mass at the Cathedral on Wednesday 18th July and we meet monthly. The Mass is open to all (regardless of age) and to attend the social afterwards, meet at the back of the Cathedral after the Mass. This little reminder can help people who have already made a will but may have simply forgotten to include their church. Wills should be looked at every three years or so, so that they are up-to-date. A good man who had been active in his church for 38 years died and when his will was read he had willed a generous gift to his alma mater, which he had attended but had not visited for 40 years or more. But they asked, his wife explained. And the church didn t. Olive Wood Carvings Next weekend following all the Cathedral Masses, the Good Shepherd Company from the Holy Land (Bethlehem) which is based in Nottingham and works alongside with St. Vincent De Paul Society for orphans and elderly in the Holy land will be selling Olive Wood Carvings at the back of the Cathedral. All monies raised from sales will help to support the Christian families in the Holy Land to stay at work as olive wood carves as it is one of the most important sources of income for them. There will be rosaries, crosses, cribs and religious statues for sale. Adoremus: National Eucharistic Congress, Liverpool 7th- 9th September 2018 The Bishops of England and Wales are holding a National Eucharistic Pilgrimage and Congress in Liverpool in September Eucharistic Congresses are gatherings of clergy, religious and laity which promote an awareness of the central place of the Eucharist in the life and mission of the Church. 7 Becoming a Catholic ~ Journey of Faith We are now looking ahead to this coming autumn s Journey of Faith Programme and invite any adult non-catholic or non-christian, or Catholic adult who has not received the Sacraments, or is interested knowing more about the Catholic Church and perhaps becoming a member, to contact a member of the Clergy. Baptism Course The dates for the next Baptism Course have been set for: - 21st and 28th July The session will start at 10.30am to 12.00noon and will be held in St Barnabas Cathedral Hall. Parents or expectant parents, at either St Augustine s Parish or the Cathedral Parish, wishing their child to be baptised are asked to complete and return to Cathedral House a Baptism Application Form as soon as possible. This programme is designed for parents of children up to the age of 6 years only. The 32nd Rosary Rally takes place this year on the 26th August 2018 at Mount St Bernard Abbey, Leicestershire. You are warmly invited to join in the Rally to pray for World Peace and Young People. The Principle Celebrant is Fr Denis Geoghegan o.c.s.o. and the day will commence at 2pm with concelebrated Mass, followed by picnic and refreshments in the lovely grounds of the monastery. Resuming at 4pm the second part of the Rally will consist of the crowning of a statue of Our Lady, a procession with Rosary and hymns with a choir, followed by the Blessed Sacrament, blessing of the sick and concluding with Benediction. Bring a folding chair or stool. If you have attended the Rallies before, please note the change of venue and times. Mount St Bernard Abbey is situated on the Oaks Road near Coalville (Postcode LE67 5UL). About 5 miles from Junction 23 of the M1 and off the A512 in the direction of Ashby, signposted from Shepshed. Please continue to support these charities with your gifts during Homelessness is increasing and looks set to do so for the foreseeable future. Easyfundraising We were recently informed of the benefits of website which is used to fundraise for churches or other registered charities. By signing up to the website and selecting St Barnabas Maintenance Fund as your chosen charity, a donation can be made every time we do online shopping on a large variety websites including Tesco, Sainsbury s, Amazon or ebay. Unfortunately there are only 14 people signed up and using this service to support St Barnabas. We would encourage everyone to sign up to the website, choose St Barnabas Maintenance Fund as your chosen charity and when you are ready to do some online shopping, it's a matter of "clicking-through" via the easyfundraising website where a donation will be paid to the Cathedral on a quarterly basis. The donation (a bit like cash back) can be anything from 1% for some retailers and up to 50 or more for switching utilities. For example, if you wanted to buy something from Amazon, you would first go to and log in, search for Amazon in the browse retailers box and the website then redirects you to Amazon s website. From here you would make your purchase as normal and a donation would be logged and transferred to St Barnabas Maintenance Account within 3 months. Please do consider helping us raise money this way.
