We hold events every Tuesday, during term time, after the on-campus service of Adoration (4.30 p.m.- 5 p.m.) and student Mass (5 pm). We alternate between socials such as Mario Kart night, Lasertag, All Saints Parties and Connect, an event where a student gives a talk on one part of the Catholic Faith which we then discuss and explore more fully. To get connected you can find us on our Facebook page: UoN Catholic Society - or contact the President of CathSoc, Chris Bird: mobile: and atycb2@nottingham.ac.uk or our Catholic Chaplain: Fr Jonathan Rose: mobile: or jonathan.rose@nrcdt.org.uk There is so much going on this year there is bound to be something that you might enjoy, so get in touch, and get involved! You will be assured of a very warm welcome! Old Pound Coins If you have any old pound coins lurking, please donate them to the Cathedral Restoration Fund. Thank you.
4 Today: Jesus s constant teaching was that we must be humble and not proud, that we must be willing to serve others, not dominate them. Since James and John, and the other apostles as well, failed to grasp his teaching, Jesus became as explicit as possible when he said, Anyone of you who aspires to greatness must serve the rest; whoever wants to rank first among you, must serve the needs of all. That summarized his teaching. Some years ago, now, a quiz was given to a new class of nursing students in their first year of training. Most of the students did well on the quiz, until they came to the last question that they all left blank. That question was, What is the name of the woman you see every morning who cleans the school? The students thought that the question was a joke until they found out that the professor was counting the question against them. When they protested, the professor said, In your careers, you will meet many people. All of them are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you can do is smile and say hello. Servant leaders notice the marginal. That bit of spiritual advice is played out in those old folktales where the high and the mighty decide, in a moment of grace, to go in disguise among the ordinary people to get their perspective on life. In the movies you have Sullivan s Travels, where a movie producer puts on the clothes and life style of a bum: The Prince and the Pauper, where twins, one a prince and one a pauper, change places: we know the story of Ebenezer Scrooge who is forced out of his isolation to witness the household of Bob Cratchit. All learn to see through others eyes, and they become wiser and better leaders for it. Back to James and John who wanted privilege, power, and position without the cross; who wanted leadership without the service, the slavery of love. Well, they must have been totally embarrassed and shamed when, at the end of the day, there were two down-and-out thieves, one at the right and one at the left in Jesus s kingdom. Not quite what they first imagined, but it made Jesus s point. Followers of Jesus do not sit they stand in solidarity with the world s most famous foot-washer. (MB) Lest We Forget To mark the 100th Anniversary of the end of the First World War, 100 wreaths will be hung in the Cathedral on the 26th October and blessed by Fr Malachy at 11am on the 27th October. The Cathedral Choir will perform an hour long recital of music and poems to mark the Armistice. All are welcome to come along to the blessing to remember those who died not only in the First World War but also those who have died in All Wars. A Cake Stall takes place in the Cathedral Hall on Sunday 28th October, Donations of cakes would be gratefully received to sell on the day and everyone is welcome to come along and support the event. World Mission Sunday Today is your chance to support missionaries and our Church in proclaiming the Gospel of hope to those who suffer around the world. By supporting Missio, the Pope s official charity for overseas mission, you will be sharing the love of Christ with all people by helping everyone in need, regardless of background or belief. Today, your prayers and donations will help build a future of hope both in Ethiopia and around the world. Please give what you can, and if possible, please use the Gift Aid envelopes if you are a taxpayer. Thank you. St Augustine Loose Plate Envelopes S/Orders Total Parish Finances Last Week Cathedral 1, , Thank you for your generosity to the work of the Church! In your Will, please remember your Church. A Holy Water Dispenser is in St Hugh s Chapel at the back of the Cathedral. Good Catholic Practice is that Holy Water should be available in our homes.

6 Willson House Car Park After many months of chasing we have finally heard from the workmen s Insurers, who damaged the bollards in the car park and they are acknowledging full responsibility. We are now in the process of arranging for our contractors to come back to mend the bollards and we will let you know of the start date once we have it, as the car park will be inaccessible during this time. Joyce Crawford RIP We were all so sad to hear the news that Joyce had passed away. She had been housebound these past few years but Joyce still always sent in things for the bazaars and Friday Lunches and was always very generous in donations for the Cathedral. Joyce s husband Arthur died a few years ago. They were a very private couple who loved their faith and the Cathedral too. Charles, a Eucharistic Minister from the Cathedral, took Joyce Holy Communion every Saturday and did a weekly shop for her, which she appreciated very much. Alan & Pearl visited her and took her to hospital appointments. Clare, a neighbour, was a very good friend too. Joyce s Funeral Mass will take place at the Cathedral on Wednesday 24th October at 10.30am. Please do try & come as Joyce will have no relatives there. Please keep Joyce & Arthur in your prayers, for the good people that they were. May they rest in peace. Valerie Black Legacies This past week The Cathedral has received a very generous legacy. Teresa Dudzinski RIP left the Cathedral Parish 30, Please remember Teresa in your prayers may she rest in peace! If you would be kind enough to consider a legacy to the Church in your Will, it is a tax advantage as a Charity. The recommended form of legacy is as follows: I GIVE free of tax the sum of (insert the amount you wish to give here or the percentage of your residuary estate) to NOTTINGHAM ROMAN CATHOLIC DIOCESAN TRUSTEES (Charity Number ) of Willson House, 25 Derby Road, Nottingham. NG1 5AW, generally without imposing any binding trust or legal obligation but with the wish that it be used for (insert here Parish name or the General Purposes of the Charity or one of the Special Funds or associated charities below) AND I DECLARE that the receipt of the Financial Secretary or other proper officer for the time being of the said charity shall be a sufficient discharge to my Trustees. Weddings Please remember in your prayers Rachel Daniels and Vincent Neary who are to be married next weekend at the Cathedral. May their lives together be blessed with happiness and peace. November - a time for remembering Few Christians need encouraging to pray for the dead. We pray for them naturally as we pray for our loved ones and friends who are still living. It would be strange not to do so, as the Faithful Departed are as near to us as Christ is, for they are in Christ like we are. November is a time to remember our loved ones who have gone to the Lord. Here in the Cathedral and at St Augustine s we will have a Novena, please complete the form by adding your loved ones names and place it in the envelope provided - these envelopes can be found at the back of the churches. All names will be placed on the altar for the celebration of Mass and will be the Intentions for the Mass during the time of the Novena. (MB) Artisan Market The rain did not dampen the spirits of the Art and Craft Group last weekend as we set up for our first Artisan Craft Market. The pace was very busy with a steady flow of visitors, many of whom were very surprised at the high quality and workmanship of the items for sale. Excellent refreshments available throughout the day encouraged visitors to stay longer, and kept the stall holders going. After expenses a total of 1, was raised for the Cathedral, an amazing result. So a big thank you to everyone for their hard work and support and to all who came and bought. Our next event will be a Christmas Crafts Sale and flower arranging demonstration called Christmas Memories, which will take place on Friday 16th November. Tickets will be 6.00 which will include a cream tea.
