4 Today: There is nothing wrong with being ambitious. Indeed, it is good to be ambitious, to have goals, to want to be good at what one does and to succeed in it. But ambition can get out of hand. It can cause us to forget everything else in the pursuit of success in business or in a career. Hence, we must be careful what we are sacrificing in the pursuit of our goals. We may be sacrificing family life, justice, kindness, even life itself. Drive and ambition can cause one to treat others in a cruel or unjust way. What good will it do us if we gain the whole world but lose ourselves? In the Gospel we see the apostles fighting over who would be first in Jesus kingdom. The scene is not an edifying one. That they are driven by selfishness and false ambition shows how little they have learned from Jesus. it shows how poor was their understanding of his mission. Jesus called them together and gave them a lecture on the meaning of true greatness. Jesus did not abolish ambition. Rather, he redefined it. For the ambition to rule others he substituted the ambition to serve others. Jesus set the example himself. Though he had authority from God, he never used that authority to dominate others. Instead, he used it to serve others. And that service was directed towards the poor, the sick, the maimed, the outcasts. The really great people, those who are fondly remembered, are not those who sought to further themselves and their own interests, but rather those, who devoted themselves to furthering the interests of the community. Service implies that you re not there for yourself. You are there for others. In order to serve, one has to be very self-effacing. A servant has to get used to being taken for granted. There is a woman in Dublin who in 1988 started short-term fostering she works for a Catholic Adoption Agency. She receives the baby when he/she is two or three days old, and usually, has the baby for three months. Then the baby is either taken back to the natural mother, or adopted, or goes into long-term fostering. This dear woman, by no means well-off, has to date fostered over forty babies. She says, It can be hard work at times, but I enjoy it. She enjoys it because she does it with love. Anyone who welcomes one of these little children, welcomes me, would be a fitting epitaph for her life. (MB) Fr Kevin Athaide I would like to thank all parishioners for their most generous gifts and cards received last weekend. Thank you for your kind words and good wishes and please do keep me in your prayers. Fr. Biju Joseph We welcome Fr Biju into our parish community. Please do make yourself known to him as he comes to minister amongst us. Children s Liturgy On the 30th September there will be no Children's Liturgy, due to the co-ordinators having difficulties getting to church for the Mass, due to the staging of the Robin Hood Marathon. We will continue as normal on the following Sunday 7th October. If any parents or adults would be interested in helping or leading the Children's Liturgy, please speak to Father Malachy or contact Eva Kerry on CAFOD Harvest Fast Day is Friday 5th October On this day, CAFOD invites us to eat simply - perhaps having a bowl of soup instead of a meal - and give the money we save to help people around the world have what they need to survive and thrive, now and in the future. Please pick up a Fast Day envelope and give what you can. There will be a Second Collection this weekend in respect of Education Sunday. St Augustine Loose Plate Envelopes S/Orders Total Parish Finances Last Week Cathedral 1, , Thank you for your generosity to the work of the Church! In your Will, please remember your Church. 5 St Augustine s Cheese and Wine Evening Sr. Treasa would like to thank everybody for their generous donation of bottles, cheese and for help with the hall & serving. It was a good evening and the atmosphere was great. Thanks also to those who bought tickets even when you could not attend. Your generosity was overwhelming and we have enough bottles left to put on a Homemade Mince Pies & Wine get together before Christmas. Watch this space! The total amount raised for our Church Roof was 616. Well done ALL of you. Thank you all so much and God Bless. Nano Nagle Relic Many of you will know that Nano Nagle is the Foundress of the Presentation Sisters. Three of us reside here at St Augustine s Presbytery and have been a presence here for fifteen or more years. We are privileged to have the First Class Relic of Nano with us for nearly two weeks. It will be placed on the Altar during all Masses & you are free to generate it at those times. It will also be taken into St. Augustine's School one morning. Nano was declared VENERABLE in October Like the Venerable Mary Potter we need a miracle or two to be declared a Saint. Please pray for this intention if it be God's Will. She founded Catholic Education in Ireland during the Penal times and even her family were not aware of her 'Hedge Schools' for a long time. If you wish to know more about her do not hesitate to contact either Sisters Treasa, Philomena or Bernadette. 7 GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATION: (GDPR). This came into effect from 25th May 2018 and both the Diocese and the Parishes are in the process of updating their privacy policies. A copy of the parish privacy policy can be viewed at We try at all times to keep all personal data collected and processed accurate and up to date. We check the accuracy of data when it is collected and at regular intervals thereafter. Where any inaccurate or out-ofdate data is found, all reasonable steps will be taken to amend or erase that data as appropriate. We need to be sure we are holding accurate information and are following the correct procedures in relation to the new regulations and so we will shortly be taking a new census of parishioners at both parishes. One of the first changes we have to implement is within the Parish Bulletin. Whilst we are able to include all Mass Intentions in the bulletin printed within the church boundaries, unfortunately we are unable to include the names of Mass Intentions for the living onto the website, this also includes people on the Sick List and any other names of people that have not personally given us permission directly to do so. Please bear with us as we get used to the changes we have to make.
