RE-REGISTRATION can be done online or through . NEW REGISTRATION (any child new to our RE Program, K-10 including siblings of current students) must be done in person using the blue forms found in the atrium and vestibule. New students cannot be accepted online. Watch for a Constant Contact with directions as to how to register and pay online. 3 FROM FATHER MICHAEL... Parish Calendar Reminder for Ministry Heads Just a friendly reminder for all parish ministry heads and heads of parish clubs to please contact Lisa Cerchia in the parish office, , and to have your events placed on the parish calendar as soon as possible. Our parish is very active and our limited space for meeting rooms fills up quickly. If you are planning ministry/club meetings, special events such as golf outings or bake sales or other events, NOW is the time to have them placed on the parish calendar. The early bird gets the date! Parish Council Ends 2015 Term, Welcomes New Members, Thanks Others The Parish Council came to a close on 15 June for the summer and accomplished much over the past year while setting the tone for the coming year as we plan to improve and expand our mission of promoting our faith in the Word of God and in our actions as His disciples. Our thanks go to Tom Tanski, Parish Council President, who has ended his term as president but will remain on the Council. I want to thank Tom for his dedication and hard work and for his great enthusiasm on many projects. Under Tom s leadership we have created a committee to implement the ideas of Rebuilt, a book on expanding and maintaining the life and identity of a Catholic parish community (the Committee will work over the summer on the agenda for the 2016 Parish Council); a great Volunteer Gala was held, a review of parish ministries and committees was begun, and the current parish photo directory was initiated, to name a few items. Tom s leadership and passion was evident in everything. We welcome our new Parish Council President, Jim Peters, who will transition from his current role as Vice President into the Presidency. We expect more great things of the PC under Jim s leadership, with his hallmark qualities of organization and consensus building. Some other changes in the membership of the Council are also noted: John Dillon has ended his term on the PC but not his enthusiasm and drive for success in our parish. John will remain on the Rebuilt Committee as well as be a driving force in many parish happenings. He is also a religious education teacher and a Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion. John has been and is the energy behind much of our work. I thank him for his dedication and passion. We also welcome three (3) new members to the Parish Council John McManus, Anne Connolly, and Judy McDonald and we look forward to their ideas as well as their action to continue to make St. Catherine of Siena a Catholic leader in our community. The Parish Council, (PC) is a consultative body that advises the pastor on issues of concern to the parish and helps the pastor implement changes and growth in parish programs and life. In a sense, the PC is the eyes and ears of the parish. Feel free to contact Fr. Michael or any member of the PC with any concern or comment you might have (the PC posters in the atrium and vestibule will be updated with the new contact information shortly). The Parish Council is strongly recommended by the Archdiocese of Hartford for each parish to have one, and the Finance Council is commanded by Canon Law. We are blessed to have so many dedicated parishioners who are willing to share their expertise and love for our parish on these two vital Councils. Thanks to all involved. Father s Day Celebrations and More This year s Father s Day (and Mother s Day) celebrations take on deeper meaning in our modern American culture. Whether we are looking at Baltimore, Hartford or to the future Philadelphia s papal visit focusing on family life, the role of parenting in our modern culture is at a crossroads. The telltale signs of the abdication of parenting by some have led us to a confused world where the human family is in trouble. Perhaps this is not so much the case in the Simsbury s of the world but certainly where families are broken or parents are seeking to win popularity contests by being best friends rather than parents to their children, the new family structure is leading us into a culture of disrespect and heartache. How can one expect a young child to grow up with a healthy self-esteem even hope for the future when the home environment is nonexistent? No role models, no family life to imitate, no structure in which to be formed, and with little respect for the human person does not a healthy citizenry make. Look at the outcome: poverty now means that rules can be broken, cities can be burned, and life can be overruled. What about the poor who came before us the Irish, the Italian, the German, the Vietnamese, and many others of the huddled masses who also were poor, uneducated and without daily luxuries yet who not only didn t burn down their villages or riot-their-homes into piles of debris, but rather built their cities and communities with hope hope for a better future. They did this because of families and communities calling them to something greater not to be bitter, but to be better. Perhaps the breakdown of the human family hit hard by easy and multiple divorces, by children being born out of wedlock as a regular occurrence and readily accepted by all, with faith no longer regularly practiced in the home and community, and with the loss of positive role models needed to recognize each person as the image and likeness of God a father and a mother calling their children to a better life and from whom the children learned what it means to be fully human, needs to be center stage again. As we come together both as families and as a Church this Father s Day, let us remember that the day is much more than a Bar-B-Que in the backyard or gifts for Dad or some quiet time to watch a favorite sporting event, but rather it is about the rebuilding of the human family; it is about gratitude for our parents and their selflessness, and about respect given and offered more importantly it is about being cooperators with God in His plan for recreation and salvation in and through the family. Perhaps this will give us a new perspective on these two days of celebration (Mother s and Father s Day) and on God s plan for everyone. The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time. In today s second reading from Paul to the Corinthians the Saint makes two statements: (1) that Jesus died for all, and (2) Christ no longer is seen in the flesh. In the first statement, the life of Christ is summed up in all lives of His disciples and we are called to be Christ in today s world; in the second statement we are now called to see the life of Christ lived 2000 years ago with eyes of faith and that Christ is now alive in His Church and by God s Holy Spirit dwelling within the Church and in each of us. continued on next page

4 Get involved: you don t have to do everything... Fr. Michael continued So as we read this letter, perhaps thinking that St. Paul was only speaking to the Corinthians, let us recognize that St. Paul speaks to us today and let us all hear the question St. Paul is asking each of us: Who is Jesus Christ for me, and what difference does my answer to this question mean for how I treat others? Think too how our answer applies to the celebration of our parents on Mother s Day and Father s Day and to the responsibility our individual roles have in the human family. Ministers of the Mass A reminder that I am looking for additional Eucharistic Ministers of Holy Communion, lectors, ushers and altar servers to help serve the celebration of the Mass. We will train and assist you with scheduling yourself for our liturgies and Masses. Sign-up sheets are in the atrium during the entire month of June. Please prayerfully consider serving God in one of these ministries. The parish will then schedule a training session for each of the ministries. Eucharistic Ministers must attend a Archdiocesan training session, lectors, ushers and altar servers are trained here in the parish by our liturgy committee members.
