READINGS THIS WEEK COLLECT Almighty God, whose people are knit together in one holy Church, the mystical Body of your Son, grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you; through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Holy and mighty God, we give you thanks for the triumph of Christ in the lives of all his saints. Receive all we offer you this day, and help us, like them, to run our course with faith, that we may come to your eternal kingdom. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Lord of hosts, we praise your glory reflected in your saints. May we who share at this table be filled with the joy of your eternal kingdom, where Jesus is Lord, now and for ever. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF DANIEL In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified me. I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter: "As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever - forever and ever." DANIEL 7:1-3, A READING FROM THE LETTER OF PAUL TO THE EPHESIANS In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance NOVEMBER 6,

8 toward redemption as God's own people, to the praise of his glory. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. EPHESIANS 1:11-23 THE HOLY GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE Then Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. "But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you." LUKE 6:20-31 NOVEMBER 6,

9 Psalm 149 Chant No. 9 Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord / a new song;* sing his praise in the congregation / of the faithful. Let Israel rejoice / in his maker;* let the children of Zion be joyful / in their king. Let them praise his name / in the dance;* let them sing praise to him with tim-/brel and harp. For the Lord takes pleasure / in his people* and adorns the / poor with victory. Let the faithful re-/joice in triumph;* let them be joyful / on their beds. Let the praises of God be / in their throat* and a two-edged sword / in their hand; to wreak vengeance / on the nations* and punishment / on the peoples; to bind their / kings in chains* and their nobles with links of iron; to inflict on them the judg-/ment decreed;* This is glory for all his faithful people. Hal-/lelujah! NOVEMBER 6,

10 Introit Placare, Christe, Servulis Gregorian Chant PLACARE, Christe, servulis, quibus Patris clementiam tuae ad Tribunal gratiae patrona Virgo postulat. To Thy poor servants reconciled show mercy, Christ, for whom the mild and Virgin Patroness this grace implore before Thy Father's face. Et vos, beata per novem distincta gyros agmina, antiqua cum praesentibus, futura damna pellite. Apostoli cum Vatibus, apud severum Iudicem veris reorum fletibus exposcite indulgentiam. Vos, purpurati Martyres, vos, candidati praemio confessionis, exsules vocate nos in patriam. Chorea casta Virginum, et quos eremus incolas transmisit astris, Caelitum locate nos in sedibus. Deo Patri sit gloria, Natoque Patris unico; Sancto simul Paraclito, in sempiterna saecula. Ye glorious hosts, whose circle nine before God's throne refulgent shine, shield us with your celestial arms from past, present, and future harms. Apostles with the Prophets plead for weeping sinners in their need, that from their Judge severe they gain pardon, effacing guilt's dark stain. Ye purpled martyrs, you, now dressed in white because your lives confessed your Lord on earth, us exiles call unto the fatherland of all. O choir of virgins, stainless band! and ye for whom the desert-land made sure the way to heavenly rest, prepare us mansions with the blest. Glory, O Father! to Thy name; eternal Son, to Thine the same; to Holy Paraclete be praise throughout the everlasting days. Psalm 149 Cantate Domino. Chant by G. Knight 1 O sing unto the Lord a new song: let the congregation of saints praise him. 2 Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: and let the children of Sion be joyful in their King. 3 Let them praise his Name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with timbrel and harp. 4 For the Lord hath pleasure in his people, and adorneth the humble with salvation. 5 Let the saints be joyful with glory: let them sing for joy upon their couches. 6 Let the praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hands; 7 To be avenged of the nations, and to rebuke the peoples; 8 To bind their kings in chains, and their nobles with links of iron; 9 To execute upon them the judgement that is written. Such honour have all his saints. NOVEMBER 6,

Saints Alive Thanks and Looking Ahead The Cathedral appreciates the time that Wendy Fraser, CEO of Hospice Halifax, recently spent with us to increase our awareness of the hospice enterprise for Halifax. With Hospice Halifax s mission of supporting people affected by a life-limiting illness, death and bereave- NOVEMBER 6,

13 ment, Wendy updated us the on the goal of Hospice Halifax to establish community-based hospice residences within HRM. There will not be a stand alone Saints Alive program for November; rather, to continue with another goal of Hospice Halifax, to increase awareness around all issues of death and dying, we are encouraging all those who support Saints Alive to attend and participate in the Panel Discussion on Medically Assisted Dying: A just expression of care for the dignity of every human being. This Panel Discussion, hosted by the Cathedral, takes place on Wed. Nov. 23; 7 9; in the Great Hall. We are very pleased to welcome 3 superb guests for this Panel Discussion: Rev. Canon Dr. Jody Clarke, Academic Dean & Assoc. Professor of Pastoral Theology, AST; Professor Jocelyn Downie, Faculties of Law and Medicine and Faculty of Health Law Institute, Dalhousie University; and Dr. Ken Rockwood, Geriatrician, Professor and Director of Geriatric Medicine Research, Dalhousie University. As always, all are welcome. Help fill our house! From August some 1000 young people and leaders, from across Canada, gathered in Charlottetown, PEI for the 2016 CLAY Conference (Canadian Lutheran Anglican Youth). The event provided opportunities to for these young, dynamic, Christians to connect, worship, learn, and interact with the community around them. As part of the conference young people took to the streets to learn about homelessness in Canada. On any given night, 30,000 Canadians are without homes, and more than 150,000 Canadians register for shelters every year. As a symbol of their experience they erected a large NOVEMBER 6,

14 cardboard house and covered the walls with messages of hope and challenge for people to engage in efforts to reach out to those who have no permanent shelter, and to eradicate homelessness. This house has now been erected in our Cathedral as a witness to their plea for action. While providing low cost/affordable housing is a long-term goal and an ongoing issue, we can reach out to those around us in an immediate and tangible way. As fall approaches we are asking for you to help us fill our house with clean, new, warm socks, blankets, sweaters, or coats. These will be shared with those who frequent our local shelters and dropin centers or those who come to the Cathedral seeking assistance. Columbarium Renovations Throughout the summer, work was done to repair and restore the Columbarium which had suffered water damage over the past few years, and to expand the space to accommodate an additional 100+spaces. We are now waiting for the cabinetry to be completed and installed. This will enable us to complete the flooring in the new section. We are also looking for memorial contributions to replace the old light fixtures, and contributions towards the purchase of new flower stands. If you or your family are interested in helping, please contact Dean Paul. Canon John Floberg, Presiding Priest on the Standing Rock territory issued a call for 100 clergy to come and stand with the Water Protectors; to pray and give witness to the Gospel at Standing Rock. They are trying to stop an oil pipeline that runs close to their territory and has already disrupted ancient burial grounds. A leak in the pipe- NOVEMBER 6,

18 line, and this is certainly possible, threatens clean water not only for Standing Rock but for all near the Missouri River and its tributaries. As of today, over 400 clergy are traveling to Standing Rock, among them is Bishop Mark. We ask you to join with us in prayer with special intention for the clergy gathering tomorrow. Pray that good minds will prevail and that all will be safe. Pray with sage, sweet grass, cedar, tobacco or whatever you use in your prayers. Pray this prayer, written by the Rev. Brandon Mauai, Dakota Sioux from Standing Rock: Creator of all things living. On these lands of our people, our relatives and family, we ask you to be present. On these lands of our ancestors, we ask for your guidance. On these lands of our future generations, we ask for your protection. In all the chaos, humble our hearts and calm our minds. Draw us nearer to you, and build us up to stand in the shadows cast upon us. Strengthen us mentally, so that we might never scare. Strengthen us physically, so that we might stand for however long, to fight the good fight without waiver. Cast your breath upon us, and breathe our people back to life. Centuries have now passed, and now we stand For all ages, races, and living creatures. Now we stand, for All Life. This we ask, humbly and with humility, in your name. Amen. NOVEMBER 6,
