In a world that is broken and in need of your motherly love, please use us to aid others as you do us in providing comfort, nurture, protection and support. We ask that you grow us as carers to those who need us, so that we might celebrate your goodness together even through our own brokenness. Amen. Please sit or kneel Prayers of Penitence Deacon Christ has no body now on earth but ours, no hands but ours, no feet but ours; ours are the eyes through which to look at Christ s compassion to the world, ours are the feet with which he is to go about doing good, and ours are the hands with which he is to bless us now. Let us confess that we have failed to listen to the call of Christ upon our lives. (A moment of silence is kept.) Deacon We have failed to nurture the needy, Lord, have mercy. The Gospel Matthew 14: Please turn to face the Gospel Deacon Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking towards them on the lake. But when the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified, saying, It is a ghost! And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid. Peter answered him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. Jesus said, Come. So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came towards Jesus. 6

7 But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me! Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, You of little faith, why did you doubt? When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God. When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. After the people of that place recognised him, they sent word throughout the region and brought all who were sick to him, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. We believe and trust in him. Do you believe and trust in God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us and rose again? We believe and trust in him. Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God and makes Christ known to the world? We believe and trust in him. This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 7

10 The Eucharistic Prayer Remain standing President The Lord be with you: and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. From the beginning you have created all things and all your works echo the silent music of your praise. In the fulness of time you made us in your image, the crown of all creation. 11 How wonderful the works of your hands, O Lord. As a mother tenderly gathers her children, you embraced a people as your own. When they turned away and rebelled your love remained steadfast. From them you raised up Jesus our Saviour, born of Mary, to be the living bread, in whom all our hungers are satisfied. He offered his life for sinners, and with a love stronger than death he opened wide his arms upon the cross. On the night before he died, he came to supper with his friends and, taking bread, he gave you thanks. He broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. President Jesus Christ is Lord: Lord, by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. You are the Saviour of the world. Father, we plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross; we remember his dying and rising in glory, and we rejoice that he intercedes for us at your right hand. Pour out your Holy Spirit as we bring before you these gifts of your creation; may they be for us the body and blood of your dear Son. 11

12 As we eat and drink these holy things in your presence, form us in the likeness of Christ, and build us into a living temple to your glory. Bring us at the last with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mary Sumner and all the saints to the vision of that eternal splendour for which you have created us; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, by whom, with whom, and in whom, with all who stand before you in earth and heaven, we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen. Remain standing The Lord s Prayer President Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread President We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. 12

13 Giving of Communion President God s holy gifts for God s holy people. Jesus Christ is holy, Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Please remain in your seats until invited by the stewards to go to the station indicated. If you require a gluten-free wafer, please go to the President for Communion. If you prefer not to receive Communion but would like to receive a blessing, please hold a service sheet. Once the banner bearers have received Communion, they go to the South Transept to stand by their banners. The Southwark Mothers Union Choir will sing during Communion. Please stand Prayer after Communion We thank you, Lord, that you have fed us in this sacrament, united us with Christ, and given us a foretaste of the heavenly banquet prepared for all peoples. Amen. Please sit THE DISMISSAL Banner Procession accompanied by the organ. When the banner bearers have reached their allotted places in the side aisles, the President will pronounce the Blessing. 14 The Blessing President The Lord be with you and also with you. President May the Lord who brought us all to birth, strengthen us in our daily life. May the Lord who provides for all our needs sustain us day by day. May the Lord whose steadfast love is for all, send us out to live and work for others. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be with you and remain with you always. Amen.
