1 Sacred Heart Southend-on-Sea St John Fisher Prittlewell Parish Priest: Fr Tom Saunders The Presbytery 418 Southchurch Road Southend-on-Sea Essex SS1 2QB PARISH NEWSLETTER 25 th May 2014 Sixth Sunday of Easter Fire Drills This Weekend! As part of ongoing improvements in the parish s Health & Safety procedures, we are required to hold regular fire drills. At the end of Masses this weekend (24 th and 25 th May) you will be asked to leave the church in a prompt and orderly way. When the drill is over you will be able to return to the church to pray, to light a candle or to talk to friends. The drills will help to identify any problems that might arise if the churches had to be evacuated in case of a real emergency. Fr Tom Child Friendly Prayer Group The Group will not be meeting during half term and will reconvene on Wednesday 4th June. If, during the holiday, you have an urgent prayer need please call Lyndsey Reynolds on Faith Study Group The next meeting will be on Thursday 5 th June from 1.30pm to 3.00pm. For details, please ring Sandy Stidston (467188) or Barbara Solomons ( ). Everyone welcome. Baptism Preparation The next Course for parents and expectant parents who wish to have a child baptised at Sacred Heart or St John Fisher will be on Mondays 7 th and 14 th July at 7.00pm in Sacred Heart Hall. Please pick up a form from the church porch to register for the course and request the Baptism. Someone Cares A New Initiative for the Parish Thank you to everyone who came to one of the two meetings. You came up with several good ideas, and we had many meaningful discussions around some of the deep-seated reasons why we find it hard to get to know each other and to care for each other as a community. I am still sorting through the suggestions, and there will be more news shortly. Fr Tom.
2 Sacred Heart and St John Fisher Youth Club Future activities include a football tournament and a barbecue in the summer. Future dates are June 6 th, June 20 th, July 4 th and July 18 th. The youth club runs between 7.30pm and 9.00pm in Sacred Heart Church Hall. The cost is just 1.50 per week, for further information please contact Lyndsey Reynolds on CAFOD Lenten Boxes Sacred Heart We would like to thank everyone who took part; you raised an amazing Keep an eye on the newsletter for an announcement of our next venture to raise funds for CAFOD. Sandy & Liam Rand Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School and Nursery Would like to invite all those involved with the Sacred Heart School over the last 100 Years to join us for our Centenary Celebrations on Sunday 6 th July for an Open Air Mass at 11.00am at the school, followed by celebrations afterwards. Please bring a picnic and enjoy tea & cakes, Pimms or strawberries & ice cream from Café FOSH. Health and Safety Representative As part of the ongoing diocese-wide programme of improvements around Health & Safety, we now need to have a nominated Health & Safety Representative for each church. The H&S Representatives will assist with such things as: organising regular checks and inspections of the churches and halls; risk assessments for the activities that go on here; improving our fire precautions; recording of accidents and safety concerns; and keeping hall hirers informed of H&S needs. The legal responsibility for these matters remains with the Parish Priest, but the increasing demands in this area mean that it is no longer realistic for me to continue without two additional volunteers. Following initial training (to be arranged probably for one evening in early June), the Representatives are likely to be spending 1 or 2 hours per week on this. Please get in touch with me if you, or someone you know, might be able to help. Fr Tom Six Months of the Southchurch Foodbank The Foodbank recently celebrated six months since it started giving out food parcels. In that time, 411 food parcels were given out which helped a total of 950 people (545 adults and 405 children). There are now two distribution centres. Food is donated by various organisations including this Parish, various other local churches, some local schools, the Labour Party, Tesco and the Rotary Club. Thank you to everyone who has been supporting the Foodbank with donations of food and their time working as volunteers.
