Welcome to Chichester Cathedral. This booklet contains all you will need to follow the Cathedral Eucharist. Please take it home to aid your daily devotions. The booklet includes suggestions about posture, but it is important that individuals feel comfortable. This booklet is also available in a format with larger print. Please ask the stewards if you would like a copy. If you wish to receive a gluten-free wafer at the communion, please indicate this to one of the stewards before the Service. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. To use this, please switch your hearing aid to t. A collection will be taken in the hymn after The Peace. Many regular, even if infrequent, members of the congregation give by standing order. This helps the Cathedral to budget. If you would like to know more about this method of giving please see the information on the Pew Sheet. GIFT AID - If you are a UK taxpayer, it would help enormously if you would place your donation in a Gift Aid envelope (included in the service booklet) before putting it in the collection, because we can then reclaim 25p from HMRC for every 1 you give. The Cathedral Choristers are educated at the Prebendal School. For more information about the outstanding educational opportunities offered by the school please visit Children s activities - A crèche and children s group, Pebbles (ages 2-11), meet in the Canons Vestry during this service. If your children would like to join the group please ask a steward for more information. Parents are welcome too! Toy bags are also available during the service. 2

Celebrant: The Very Reverend Stephen Waine, Dean Please stand Hymn (NEH 338) At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, every tongue confess him King of glory now; tis the Father s pleasure we should call him Lord, who from the beginning was the mighty Word. At his voice creation sprang at once to sight, all the angel faces, all the hosts of light, thrones and dominations, stars upon their way, all the heavenly orders, in their great array. Humbled for a season, to receive a name from the lips of sinners unto whom he came, faithfully he bore it spotless to the last, brought it back victorious, when from death he passed. 3

Bore it up triumphant with its human light, through all ranks of creatures, to the central height, to the throne of Godhead, to the Father s breast; filled it with the glory of that perfect rest. In your hearts enthrone him; there let him subdue all that is not holy, all that is not true: he is God the Saviour, he is Christ the Lord, ever to be worshipped, trusted, and adored. Brothers, this Lord Jesus shall return again, with the Father s glory, with his angel train; for all wreaths of empire meet upon his brow, and our hearts confess him King of glory now. Words: Caroline Noel ( ) Music: Evelyns - W.H. Monk ( ) 4

The president greets the people In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit Amen. The Lord be with you and also with you. Prayer of Preparation Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Prayers of Penitence The people are invited to call to mind and confess their sins Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. 5

Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Gloria in excelsis C.V. Stanford ( ) in C Choir Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ: O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. 6 For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art the Most High, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The Collect Let us pray. Almighty God, you have broken the tyranny of sin and have sent the Spirit of your Son into our hearts whereby we call you Father: give us grace to dedicate our freedom to your service, that we and all creation may be brought to the glorious liberty of the children of God; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Please sit First Reading Jeremiah 28: 5-9 Read by Steve Holloway The prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord; and the prophet Jeremiah said, Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord fulfil the words that you have prophesied, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles. But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. As for the prophet who 7

prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet. At the end the reader says This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm Psalm 89: 9-19 Response, sung by the Choir then repeated by the congregation Choir Choir Choir You rule the raging of the sea; you still its waves when they arise. You crushed Rahab with a deadly wound and scattered your enemies with your mighty arm. My song shall be always of the kindness of the Lord. Yours are the heavens; the earth also is yours; you established the world and all that fills it. You created the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon rejoice in your name. My song shall be always of the kindness of the Lord. You have a mighty arm; strong is your hand and high is your right hand. Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before your face. My song shall be always of the kindness of the Lord. 8

Choir Choir Choir Happy are the people who know the shout of triumph: they walk, O Lord, in the light of your countenance. In your name they rejoice all the day long and are exalted in your righteousness. My song shall be always of the kindness of the Lord. For you are the glory of their strength, and in your favour you lift up our heads. Truly the Lord is our shield; the Holy One of Israel is our king. My song shall be always of the kindness of the Lord. You spoke once in a vision and said to your faithful people: I have set a youth above the mighty; I have raised a young man over the people. My song shall be always of the kindness of the Lord. Music: Timothy Ravalde (b.1988) Second Reading Romans 6: 12-end Read by Sally Chittleburgh Do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have 9

become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. At the end the reader says This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand Hymn (AMNS 373) Help us, O Lord, to learn the truths thy Word imparts: to study that thy laws may be inscribed upon our hearts. Help us, O Lord, to live the faith which we proclaim, that all our thoughts and words and deeds may glorify thy name. 10

Help us, O Lord, to teach the beauty of the ways, that yearning souls may find the Christ, and sing aloud his praise. Words: William Watkins Reid ( ) Music: Sandys - melody from W. Sandys Christmas Carols, 1833 Gospel Reading When the Gospel is announced, the reader says The Lord be with you and also with you. Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. Matthew 10: 40-end Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet s reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple - truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon The Reverend Canon Tim Schofield, Precentor Please stand 11

The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 12 We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession The president introduces the prayers of intercession. Please sit or stand These responses are used Lord, in your mercy or Lord, hear us. hear our prayer. Lord, graciously hear us. And at the end Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. The Peace Please stand. The peace of the Lord be always with you and also with you. may exchange a sign of peace. remain standing to sing the offertory hymn 13

Hymn (NHWS 208) Lord of all life and power at whose creative word in nature s first primeval hour our formless being stirred, you made the light to shine, O shine on us, we pray, renew with light and life divine your church in this our day. Lord of the fertile earth who caused the world to be, whose life alone can bring to birth the fruits of land and sea, teach us to use aright and share the gifts you give, to tend the earth as in your sight that all the world may live. Lord of the cross and grave who died and lives again, who came in love to seek and save and then to rise and reign, we share, as once you shared, in mortal birth and breath, and ours the risen life that dared to vanquish sin and death. 14

Lord of the wind and flame, the promised Spirit s sign, possess our hearts in Jesus name, come down, O Love divine! Help us in Christ to grow, from sin and self to cease, and daily in your love to show your love and joy and peace. Lord of the passing years whose changeless purpose stands, our lives and loves, our hopes and fears, we place within your hands; we bring you but your own, forgiven, loved and free, to follow Christ, and Christ alone, through all the days to be. Words: Timothy Dudley-Smith (b.1926) Music: Court Barton - Malcolm Archer (b.1952) 15

The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you and al - so with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. Father, we give you thanks and praise through your beloved Son Jesus Christ, your living Word, through whom you have created all things; who was sent by you in your great goodness to be our Saviour. By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh; as your Son, born of the blessed Virgin, he lived on earth and went about among us; he opened wide his arms for us on the cross; he put an end to death by dying for us; and revealed the resurrection by rising to new life; so he fulfilled your will and won for you a holy people. Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: 16

Choir Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Lord, you are holy indeed, the source of all holiness; grant that by the power of your Holy Spirit, and according to your holy will, these gifts of bread and wine may be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died: Christ is risen: Christ will come again. 17

And so, Father, calling to mind his death on the cross, his perfect sacrifice made once for the sins of the whole world; rejoicing in his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming in glory, we celebrate this memorial of our redemption. As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. A - men. Please stand or sit 18

The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread The president breaks the consecrated bread. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread. Giving of Communion The president invites the people to communion Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you, and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving. 19

The president and people receive communion. Members of all Christian churches are welcome to receive communion if they wish. If you would prefer to receive a blessing, please come to the altar rail with everybody else and bow your head. Agnus Dei is sung by the Choir O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. Music during Communion Choir Ave verum corpus, natum ex Maria Virgine; Vere passum, immolatum in cruce pro homine: Cuius latus perforatum vero fluxit sanguine, Esto nobis praegustatum mortis in examine. O clemens, O pie, O dulcis Jesu, Fili Mariae. Jesu, Word of God Incarnate, of the Virgin Mary born, on the cross thy sacred body for us men with nails was torn. Cleanse us, by the blood and water, streaming from thy pierced side; feed us with thy body broken, now, and in death s agony. O tender, O loving, O sweet Jesu, Son of Mary. Words: 14th century Music: Edward Elgar ( ) 20

Hymn during Communion (AMNS 374) Help us to help each other, Lord, each other s cross to bear; let each his friendly aid afford, and feel his brother s care. Up into thee, our living head, let us in all things grow, and by thy sacrifice be led the fruits of love to show. Drawn by the magnet of thy love let all our hearts agree; and ever towards each other move, and ever move towards thee. This is the bond of perfectness, thy spotless charity. O let us still, we pray, possess the mind that was in thee. Words: Charles Wesley ( ) Music: Dunfermline - Scottish Psalter,

Prayer after Communion Let us pray. Please stand O God, whose beauty is beyond our imagining and whose power we cannot comprehend: show us your glory as far as we can grasp it, and shield us from knowing more than we can bear until we may look upon you without fear; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen. Father of all, we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 22

Hymn (Sing Praise 290) Lord, make us servants of your peace: where there is hate, may we sow love; where there is hurt, may we forgive; where there is strife, may we make one. Where all is doubt, may we sow faith; where all is gloom, may we sow hope; where all is night, may we sow light; where all is tears, may we sow joy. Jesus, our Lord, may we not seek to be consoled, but to console, nor look to understanding hearts, but look for hearts to understand. May we not seek for love s return, but seek to love unselfishly, for in our giving we receive, and in forgiving are forgiven. Dying we live, and are reborn through death s dark night to endless day; Lord, make us servants of your peace to wake at last in heaven s light. Words: James Quinn, SJ ( ) after Francis of Assisi ( ) Music: O waly waly - English traditional melody 23

The Dismissal The Lord be with you and also with you. The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. The congregation joins the Choir in singing the dismissal.
