In the second reading Saint Paul eloquently exhorts the Ephesians to enlighten their hearts so that they will know the hope and glory that come from being people who place their trust in the Lord Jesus. In the story of the Ascension, recounted in the first reading, the Lord Jesus assures the disciples that the Holy Spirit s power will come upon them. Finally, in the Gospel, the Lord lets the disciples know that their mission is to spread the hope of the gospel to all the nations. We have four Gospels, each different, but all telling of the three years of Christ s public ministry. We have only this one book telling of what happened after the Resurrection. Acts was written by Luke, author of the third Gospel. Unlike Matthew, who was writing for the Jews, Luke was writing for the Gentiles, the people not born and raised in the Jewish faith. He was not an eye witness to the events, but was trying to sort out the many stories he had heard. Both of his books start out addressed to some man named Theophilus or do they? It has always seemed rather strange that Luke would do all this research and write down all of this information for one person, yet he starts out his Gospel saying that he wants to...write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received. He does the same thing when he begins the Acts of the Apostles, In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught. Who was this one man for whom he wrote the most complete account of the beginnings of Christianity? Well, it may have been you. Luke was writing in Greek, the common language of the Roman Empire at the time. Theo is the Greek word for God. Philus means one who loves. In other words, Luke was writing for the whole Christian community, making it more personal for each reader by calling attention to the fact that each of us is a Lover of God. We know that there are variations in the Bible, but often we attribute them to the fact that they were written by different authors. However, the Ascension in the Gospel of Luke is different from that in Acts, yet they were both written by the same man. Luke ends his Gospel with Jesus appearing to the Apostles in a room a few days after the Resurrection. Then he has Jesus take them out to Bethany where he leaves them and is taken up to heaven, signifying the end of his time on earth. In Acts, the Ascension is the initial event, signifying the beginning of the on earth, but it comes forty days after the Resurrection, not just one or two. Intriguingly, Luke states that he appeared to them many times during that time and taught them about the kingdom of God, yet we have nothing written of these events. (Wouldn t you love to be able to read those stories?) If you pick up a misselette or a Bible and read the beginning of Acts, you will notice that the description of the Ascension ends with two men dressed in white telling them to stop looking at the sky, for Jesus will return in the same way that he left. This is the foundation for the belief in the Second Coming. For the first thirty or forty years of the, the people thought that would occur within their lifetime. Ever since then, various religious leaders have claimed to have knowledge about when it actually is going to happen. The last one was at the turn of the century. When such claims are made, do one thing. Don t believe them, Theophilus. ~DN

Sebastine, and all of your parishioners for the warm welcome you extended to me during my pastoral visit to Our Lady of Mercy parish last weekend (April 28 - May 1). The weekend got off to a great start with the Confirmation Mass for many of your young people. I appreciated the opportunity to visit with the confirmandi briefly before the Mass, and to get to know those who were a part of their preparation at the dinner following the Mass. I pray that the newly confirmed will now remain actively involved in their faith for the rest of their lives. My Mass on Sunday followed by the reception with the people afterwards was very enjoyable. They really went out of their way to make me feel welcomed! It was also helpful to get to know the religious of the parish, and to have a meeting with the catechists and understand better their commitment to handing on the faith, especially to the children and young people of the parish. I likewise enjoyed the discussion, and dinner, with the parish leaders Sunday evening. Finally, the visit ended on a high note with the celebration of Mass with the school community and visits the classes (many indeed!) afterwards. Many thanks to Mr. Burgos for keeping us moving throughout the morning so I could visit every class. My thanks, too, to the faculty and staff for the delightful lunch at the end of the classroom visits. Thank you again for an enjoyable weekend at Our Lady of Mercy.
