3 Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor. Jesus Christ is the one eternal priest. There is no other. All men ordained derive their priesthood from Jesus Christ alone. Therefore, it would only make sense to say that any action of a priest must be what Jesus teaches or it is invalid. What is it that Jesus taught? It can t be put any more simply than what we read in today s Gospel. Here, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. That is a direct quotation from the Book of Deuteronomy. It was the first Creed of the Jewish religion, their statement of faith. It is still the core prayer of Jewish identity. The first two words, Hear, Israel, in Hebrew are Shimei, Yisroel, and so often the name of the prayer is abbreviated to The Shimei. Jesus adds to this one more sentence. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. That s it. There is nothing greater than these, Jesus says. To be faithful to the priesthood of Jesus Christ means a conscious awareness of our Christian roots in the faith of Israel. We are the adopted sons and daughter of Abraham, not the other way around. The liturgy of the Mass flows from the liturgy of sacrifice celebrated at the Temple in Jerusalem. How do we enflesh the teaching of our faith? By the way we live our lives; by the way we treat people. Any action by a priest which hurts another, which minimizes another, which puts someone down, is not the action worthy of the priest s vocation. For too long, we were raised believing that whatever the priest said was right. I hope most of the time it was, but priests make mistakes too, sometimes mistakes in fact or in judgment or in interpretation of Church teaching. Sometimes it was due to a kind of rigidity which didn t take the human needs of people into account. Sometimes it was due to a kind of arrogance or sinfulness on the part of the priest, placing themselves above the law of God and of man. If you think a priest did or said something he should not have, have the courtesy to go to the priest first so he can explain. Maybe it was a misunderstanding on your part or his, or both of you. If he doesn t listen, call the Director of Priest Personnel and explain your concern calmly. He will speak to the priest and the bishop if necessary. If it is anything pertaining to abuse of an adult or a child, call the Office for Healing and Prevention at the diocesan office immediately. Over the centuries, priests have done a lot of good, but, unfortunately, sometimes they have done harm. The Church is paying the price today for the actions of a minority of priests who brought shame on the eternal priesthood of Jesus Christ. If we live the Two Great Commandments and hold our priests accountable to the same standard, we will be the Church of Jesus Christ as we are intended to be. Jesus said to the scribe who understood what these two commandments meant, You are not far from the kingdom of God. May he say the same about us. May God bless you all, Father Bob Bruso 3

4 Religious Education Continues Children in Grades 1-6 classes continue Sunday, Nov 4 th from 9:45 AM-11:00 AM and encourage children to attend 11:15 AM Mass to continue building a friendship with Jesus. Teenagers in Grades 7-10 classes continue Monday, November 5 th from 7:00 PM- 8:15 PM. Students are asked to come around 6:15 PM to help set up the parish hall for our Christmas in Acadia Fair. No religious Education next week for Grades Rehearsals for the Children s Christmas Pageant, Gr 1-6, and the Christmas Bell Choir, Gr 7 12 begin this Wednesday, November 7th! If you would like to participate, please sign up in CCD class or call the Religious Ed office. BIBLE STUDY CONTINUES NOVEMBER 8TH At 6:30 at the Parish Center. This year s theme is The Acts of the Apostles From a Gathering of Believers to the Community of the Church. 5 Once again we are taking calls for the Giving Tree. The Giving Tree request line is We are taking requests through Nov. 9th. This is a once a year opportunity to put a smile on a child s face who otherwise might not have a present under their Christmas Tree. If you or someone you know needs assistance, you are encouraged to call this number. Great news! Due to outstanding response a new date has been added. Photography dates November 9, 10 & 27 This Week POUTINES will be available for purchase on Tuesday 2-6 pm, Wednesday and Thursday 9 am - 6 pm and on Friday from 9 am - 1 pm and also at the Fair which starts at 5 pm. Safety Alert - For take out orders, please, bring your own containers, pots are much safer for hot poutines. Poutines & Râpée - We will start eyeing potatoes and making meatballs this Monday at 8 AM on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday we will be making poutines starting at 7:30 AM. On Thursday morning we will begin making râpée. We are ALWAYS in need of help to peel, cook and carry heavy pots. Not available during the day, we could also use help between 4-6 PM to transfer poutines, carry and clean pots. There are never too many hands. Booth Setup for our Fair will begin this Monday, evening at 6:30 pm. If you can spare a little time, we could use your help removing chairs and tables from the main hall upstairs and setting up the booths. Help also needed with Booth decorating, Tuesday - Thursday evening starting at 6:30 pm. Collections Report Weekly Stewardship: $6, Monthly Church Maintanance: $2,164. On-Line Donations for October: $1, Propagation of the Faith: $1, If you live on a high traffic road, please consider picking up a sign after Mass at the back porch of the rectory and place the sign on your front lawn.

6 Attention Bakers Apples And Pie Tins may be picked at the rectory garage (near church ramp) immediately after all Masses this weekend. Apples may be used to make apple crisp, apple sauce, apple butter, apple cakes or cupcakes, apple turnovers, caramel apples and apple pies. Attention Pie Bakers! St. Cecilia's is in need of a variety of pies to sell at our Pie Booth. The kind of pies needed are as follows: pumpkin, squash, berry (blueberry, strawberry, etc..), cherry and custard. Bake, Bake, Bake, Baked Goods - This booth requires a large number of sugar-free pies, fresh bread, fudge (with or without nuts, penuche, peanut butter, etc.), cakes, cookies, and a variety of pastries. Donations of these delicious baked goods may be dropped off at the parish hall on Friday, Nov. 9 after 3 p.m. It s Not Too Late Donations for the Teen Booth, Theme Baskets, Acadian Auction, Pot Luck, Ladies of St. Anne Craft Booth, Handmade with Love Booth and Silent Auction Table are still accepting donations.
