3 Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor. Thinking as people do. Thinking as God does. What s the difference? There are many ways in which the two thoughts are different. Firstly, God thinks in terms of eternity, not what seems like the best idea right now, but what is the best idea for all time. We think in terms of now or, at best, the immediate future. When we make a decision, we think first what is best for me and my family. God thinks what is in the best interest of all people. One of the things we try to avoid at all costs in our decision making is the possibility of suffering and death. God knows that both suffering and death are part of the human experience and sometimes they cannot be avoided. Like the child who wants ice cream for breakfast and chocolate cake for dinner, our choices are not always in our best interests, no matter how much we want them. When we are children, sometimes an adult has to decide for us. Spiritually we still are children. We need God s guidance. We want to be disciples of Jesus Christ, so as to win the reward of eternal life, but at the same time, we want all the good things this world has to offer. Sometimes we have to choose. If we are truly wise, if we believe in the promises of the Lord and live our lives that way, then sometimes we have to embrace the Cross. It isn t easy, but sometimes in the midst the worst tragedies, embracing the Cross is our only hope. Looking at families in Texas and Louisiana, especially those who do not have flood insurance and have lost everything, I am struck by the repeated refrain: It s only things. We re all safe. That s what is important. We can start over. No one is saying it is easy to start over, but people with true courage can say, The most important things in life aren t things. They are people. I remember a British Broadcasting Corporation TV interview with Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy by David Frost. It was taped for her 90 th birthday and broadcast again when she was 100 and yet again when she died. Every time I saw it, I was struck by her faith, but also the reality of her human suffering. David Frost asked her, since her family had suffered so much, wouldn t it have been better to avoid politics and just stayed successful in business. She said no, you have to live your life to its greatest potential and added that the Sisters had told her in school that no matter what life you live, you would have to spend some time at the foot of the Cross. You can stand there alone, or you can stand with Mary. Mary has always been at my side, she said. Then, just when you thought she had a faith beyond human comprehension, she began to tear up and say, But Bobby. Eleven children without a father. Oh, no, no, no. Like millions of faithful disciples before and after her, Rose accepted the Cross, but she didn t have to like it. Let it be the same with us. Let us have the courage and the faith to accept the Crosses in our lives, both big and small. We don t have to pretend to like them, but we love the One who sends them, because He is preparing us, little by little, for the glory which is the reward of faithful disciples. May God bless you all, Father Bob Bruso 3

5 Jesus said: WHY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION? Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. Mathew 19:14 Dear Parent: In keeping with the promises you made for your child/children at their Baptism, we, at Saint Cecilia welcome your child to our Religious Education Program. We offer your child nourishment of mind, body, and soul, so as to encounter a living God through what the Church believes & teaches. In our modern world, families are extremely important as centers of living faith. In the home, father, mother, and children live their Baptismal call in a privileged way. The home is the first school of Christian life where all learn love, repeated forgiveness and prayerful worship (CC ). Parents have the first responsibility for the religious education and are the primary teachers of their child/children. The best gift that parents can give their child is life in the Church. With this in mind, we would like to support you in this important ministry. HOW?? Our Religious Education Program offers the following to all who attend our classes. Our volunteer Catechist teachers are here to teach, initiate, and guide your child into the Catholic faith. We have programs for the following in all grade levels. Children who have little or no formal religious education. Children who are not baptized. Children who have been baptized, and are seven years or older, but have not made their First Communion. Teens who would like to be confirmed. Persons, eighteen years and older who desire to be confirmed. All classes entail teaching that God is to be loved, adored, and served. As we come to know the joy of a loving God, and as we share it with the young people today, together we spread the Gospel to the ends of the earth. No matter how long you have been away from our Parish Family, we are always here for you! Sunday Morning Classes for Grades 1-6 begins next Sunday, Sept. 10th at 9:45 A.M. Attending the 11:15 A.M. Mass is included in the program. Monday Evening Classes for Grades 7-10 begins next Monday, Sept. 11th at 7 P.M. If you have not registered your child, it is not too late. All students should register before coming to class. For more information, please contact the Religious Ed Director, Mrs. Patricia Secino at or by pas.stc@verizon.net We honor those who dedicate their time and talent as teachers and catechists to our children. They help the Word of God come alive in the minds and hearts of our children. Next Weekend is our opportunity to support this work by contributing to our annual Parish Religious Education (CCD) Collection. There is no registration fee therefore we ask that you prayerfully consider giving a generous contribution next weekend. 5

6 The Ladies of St. Anne will be holding their first meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the parish center lower hall. We will be working on the calendar of events for All women are welcome to join us. The Fourth Annual Day of Remembrance of Aborted Babies is being held in Fitchburg on Saturday, September 9, starting at 12:00 p.m. at St Bernard Parish at St Camillus Church on 333 Mechanic St. The service begins in the church, which is handicap accessible, and concludes with a procession to the Memorial for the Unborn, which is located in Our Lady's Garden behind the rectory. People will be praying the Rosary for LIFE while walking to the monument. Speakers for the service are Mary Ann Harold, who founded WQPH 89.3 FM our area's pro-life radio station and the Prayers for Life. Our second speaker will be Linda Kinsey who had her own public access television pro-life in North Adams for 12 years. Come early to see our information table and fetal models. Spiritual Support for those with Cancer - The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetime. Many parishioners are fighting cancer, either as patients or as caregivers. Research strongly suggests that people who put their faith to work before, during, and after cancer treatment are more likely to be optimistic because they believe God has a purpose for them. Among the variety of support groups offered by the Saint Vincent Cancer and Wellness Center(SVCWC), there is one dedicated to the spiritual and sacramental support that the Catholic faith can provide. The monthly meeting is held on the first Thursday of every month and begins at 11:30 am in the chapel in the Cancer Center, located at 1 Eaton Place. The faith-sharing portion begins at Noon. Both the chapel and meeting take place on the Garden (or lowest) Level of the Center. Validated parking is available adjacent to the facility. For more information contact either Sr. Paula Kelleher or Msgr. Peter Beaulieu at The remaining sessions are Sept. 7, Oct. 5, Nov. 2, and Dec. 7.
