3 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Cecilia Church, Leominster MA September 9, 2018 Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor. Enormous strides have been made in the science of speech therapy to help those with hearing impairments or those who have had a stroke to recover the use of language. Imagine how it was at the time of Jesus. There were no trained therapists. A person who had never heard words or any sounds for that matter would have struggled mightily to be understood. How could you replicate language that you had never heard? How could you know if what you were saying was understood by the listener? Although most of us don t have to struggle to make words and syllables heard, often we wonder if what we have said was understood. Sometimes we use phrases and expressions that could be open to multiple different interpretations. Sometimes words used in jest are taken seriously. Sometimes the listener will willfully misinterpret or twist the meaning of what was said. How do we get our message across? It starts with clarity and clarity demands preparation. What do you want to say and how do you want to say it? In today s Gospel, Jesus begins curing the deaf man by taking him aside, away from the crowd. What he was about to do required concentration and not the distraction of people gawking at him. Then he first opened his ears. Before we speak, we listen. There is a reason why God gave us two ears and only one mouth. We should listen twice as much as we talk. Have you ever tried to talk to someone and you know they aren t listening? Either they are Interrupting or they are chomping at the bit waiting for you to shut up so they can say what they want to say. Maybe you re been in the opposite position. Have you ever found yourself formulating a quick come back or a put down without really listening to what the other person has to say? Do we speak words of kindness and truth, or is our language filled with lies and gossip and words in anger? Most of us must admit, if we are perfectly honest, that we have done a lot more damage with out tongues than we have even done with our fists. Let s begin by realizing that speech and all of our means of communication are gifts from God, meant for God s good purposes. When we share the truth in kindness we are doing God s work on earth. It s okay to disagree, but disagreement should never lead to anger or bitterness. Disagreement should lead to mutual respect. We don t have to have the same opinion to be friends. In the rite of baptism, the priest or deacon anoints the baby s ears and mouth with these words: May the Lord open your ears to receive his word, and your lips to proclaim his faith. Before we open our mouths, let s remember who gave us the gift of speech and let us use the gift only for good. If you have been baptized but have not received First Communion and/or Confirmation, RCIA is for you. If you are a baptized Christian who is not Catholic but wants to know more about Catholic Christianity, RCIA is for you. If you have never been baptized but want to explore if you are being called to be a Christian, RCIA is for you. RCIA is a commitment only to know more, to share, and to be open to others in our shared journey of faith. What you choose to do on that journey is up to you. Please share this with friends and family members who don t go to church but might be interested in the step. BIBLE STUDY RESUMES SEPTEMBER 20 We meet on Thursday evenings at 6:30 at the Parish Center. This year s theme is The Acts of the Apostles From a Gathering of Believers to the Community of the Church. All adults are welcome. PARISH COUNCIL meets this Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 pm in the rectory. All parishioners are invited. We would like to welcome children in Grades 1-6 to attend Sunday, Sept. 9 th from 9:45AM-11:00AM and encourage children to attend 11:15 Mass to continue with their learning and build a friendship with Jesus. We would like to welcome children in Grades 7-10 to attend Monday, Sept. 10 th from 7:00PM- 8:15PM. Friendly reminder that the doors are locked at 7:15PM. If summer went by to quick and you have not registered your child yet please try to bring (or in my house find) the registration form and bring it in the first day of class. If you have any questions please call me, Paula Doucet at the Rectory or me at pd@stceciliachurch.net. Thanks! Why Religious Education? Thank you for showing God s love to your child/ children. As a parent every time that you respond to your child s cry (especially in the night) you model God s love for us even in our darkest hours. Our instinct and love for our child/ children leads us to protect and provide for them is a parent s imitation of the profound love that God has for all of us. Formal Religious education is meant to enhance and compliment what you as parents have already been doing. If for any reason your child has never attended religious education classes or has not received the sacraments with his or her peers, please know that it is never too late. To catch your child/ children up with their peers we would have them enter a program especially geared to catch them up. I ll leave you with food for thought as to some good reasons to enroll your child/ children into a program: Religious Education can help your child/ children grow in their personal relationship with God and Jesus Christ. You have taught them about love. Religious education helps them name the source of that LOVE, God. A child who knows God, knows that he or she is loved. Religious education can help lead your child to FAITH and faith will help your child navigate life s storms. Faith reminds us that we are not alone in the midst of difficulty. Faith tells us that God is always by our side. Religious education can introduce your child/ children to our reason for HOPE. Not the wishful dreams of childhood but the real hope that God can redeem us and that with His help we can bring about change in our broken world. Religious education will reinforce the Christian VALUES that you already teach at home. You teach them right from wrong. As a faith community we repeat the message so that it is clear and consistent in your child/ children s life. Religious education helps to CONNECT you and your child/ children to a community of faith. Through our religious education program, you and your child will meet others who are also on the journey of faith towards God. Together we support each other and help each other along the way. This program was specifically designed to generate donations in support of non-profits working to make the communities local to each Hannaford store a better place. A Community Gathers to Remember The Montachusett Chorale presents the Fugue Festival Singers "Remembering in Love, September 11, 2001", performing 'Requiem Opus 48' by Gabriel Faure. The Festival Singers will be accompanied by orchestra and organ. International Food Festival Saturday, September 15 From 11 am - 8 pm Holy Family of Nazareth Church 750 Union St., Leominster MENTAL HEALTH COURSE The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is accepting enrollment for a North Central MA based Family to Family courses. This is a free twelve week psychoeducational course for family caregivers and friends of individuals living with mental health concerns. This evidenced based program provides information on taking care of the person you love, offers instruction on medications, current treatments, and communication techniques. Family to Family is taught by NAMI trained family members who have been there, and includes presentations, discussion and interactive exercises.
