3 Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor. The epistle reading today is the one that I call the Wedding Epistle. It seems like we hear it at half the weddings we go to, if not more. It s filled with good, practical advice, but it s not about romantic love. It s not advice for a happy marriage, which some people think it is about, although any couple would be well advised to take the advice. St. Paul wrote in Greek, the commonest language in the international community of the Roman Empire. The Greeks had several different words which we translate into English as love. The Greek word eros would mean romantic or erotic love. But the word St. Paul used was agape, which translates into Latin as caritas, which sounds like charity, but it really isn t. Have I gotten everyone confused by now? Charity, in today s English, carries the meaning of institutional or individual aid to someone in need. Caritas / agape would more closely mean a kind of generalized good will to all people, a spirit of mutual respect and compassion for one s fellow human beings. With that as our starting point, we can reread the epistle passage with a different sense. It wasn t written for brides and grooms, but for everyone. It s about how we are to live or lives and order our society. The world which St. Paul envisions is a world of patience, kindness, unselfishness, calmness, not vengeful, and truth seeking. This was not the way things were in Nazareth. In fact, if you read the way the people of Nazareth, Jesus own neighbors, treated him after his first visit to the synagogue after his baptism, you ll say they were the opposite of St. Paul s teaching. They were impatient, unkind, self-centered, hot tempered, vengeful, and very content to reject the truth and to cling to their own misconceptions. This does not mean that we should go into every discussion with an attitude that everything I know is wrong and whatever new ideas you have are right, but it does demand that we at least listen with a respectful ear. That s where St. Paul comes in. He establishes an attitude or a tone as to how we are to treat one another. How different the United States would be if we just listened to each other without demonizing the people we disagree with! Let s make it our resolve to reread the epistle and see the ways in which we have been guilty of the same things Paul warns the early Christian community about. The world does not change in the blink of an eye. It changes one person at a time. Let s become agents for change in our own lives. As we change, so does the world, and we become the change we want to see in the world. 4 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Cecilia Church, Leominster MA February 3, 2019 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION - Children in Grades 1-6 Classes on Sunday, Feb. 10th from 9:45 AM 11:00 AM. Families are encouraged to attend the11:15 AM family Mass as a continuation of the children s faith formation. Teenagers in Grades 7-10 Classes resume on Monday, Feb. 4th from 7:00 PM to 8:15 PM.
