3 Fifth Sunday of Easter St. Cecilia Church, Leominster MA April 29, 2018 Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor. It was reasonable of the early Christian community to be a little bit wary of Saul. After all, he approved of the martyrdom of St. Stephen, was a strongly committed Pharisee and a favorite of the Temple priesthood. His opposition to the Christians was not just passive. He sought permission to go to Damascus in Syria and root out and arrest any Jewish Christians and bring them back with him to Jerusalem. It is not difficult to imagine that their fate would have been like Stephen s. So when Saul came back, claiming to be a new convert to the Christian way, most people were not prepared to believe him. It took the courage of one man, Barnabas, to go to him, to get to know him, to trust him and to convince the others that he was sincere. At an earlier point in Saul/Paul s conversion, it took the courage of just one man to make the difference. Do you remember when Saul was struck blind on the road to Damascus and God told Ananias to go to Paul and anoint him to restore his eyesight? Of course, Ananias said he was afraid to go to him but God reassured him and Ananias had the courage to put his life in God s hands and go to this enemy of the Christians. Both Barnabas and Ananias showed themselves to be true Christians in that they trusted God and that they loved not in word and speech but in deed and truth, as St. John wrote in his epistle. That is what we are called to do to love in deed and in truth. That takes courage, the kind of courage that, on our own, none of us have. It takes courage born of faith in God. How do we acquire that courage? By remaining united to Christ as a branch is united to the vine. It is that spiritual sap residing deep within the roots of the vine that brings life to every branch. Those branches which no longer receive the sap are pruned away and discarded. Jesus tells His disciples that we are already pruned because of the word I spoke to you. Therefore, if we have received the word of God through Jesus teaching and have taken it to heart, we are filled with His new life. Even the gnarliest old branch, if it is still connected to the vine, produces fresh green buds in the spring which become leaves and ultimately grapes. Sometimes, a branch that looks pretty healthy in fact produces nothing and has to be pruned away. Sometimes the oldest branch is still producing new life. How can we tell the difference? Not because one looks supple and fresh and another looks ancient and brown, but because one produces fruit and one does not. And how do we produce fruit? By loving one another not in word and speech but in deed and truth. That love has to embrace even the stranger, even those we label as enemy. That love, and the courage to give witness to that love, can only come by being united to the source of all love, God Himself through His Son, Jesus Christ, the vine of eternal life.
