3 Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor. Jesus reminds us in today s Gospel to be unafraid of threats and potential difficulties. We cannot let anxiety rule our lives. The opposite of fear is trust. Trusting in God s care erases the constant worry and stress over things that we cannot control. Worry is like a rocking chair, my grandmother used to say. It passes the time but you don t go anywhere. Worry, stress and anxiety are killers. Firstly, they are physical killers. The issues of high blood pressure and hypertension are related to the amount of unresolved stress in our lives. Of course, many forms of cardio-vascular disease are stress-related. There is increasing evidence that many forms of cancer are related to stress as well, and it is clear that successful treatment can be hampered by high blood pressure. Many doctors are convinced that the attitude, whether positive or negative, of the patient toward radiation and chemotherapy has a good deal to do with rates of recovery. Secondly, worry, stress and anxiety kill the joy in life. Too often we spend our lives making up questions that cannot be answered. Imagine on a free summer afternoon you decided to go to the beach. Then you start to worry: What if there is an accident on the highway? What if it starts to rain? What if I can t find a parking space? Suddenly a great plan for a nice day is ruined and you end up staying at home. But there are bigger concerns. Should I go to college or get a Master s degree? What if there is no job for me when I m done studying? Should I marry so-and-so? What if it doesn t work out? Should I take this job promotion if I have to move to New Jersey? What if I don t like New Jersey? And so we get stuck and never take a chance in life. Good planning and thinking out options is important for mature decision making. But we can t resolve every possible eventuality and we ll never have all the answers before we begin. Analysis leads to paralysis, they say. The biggest problem is imagining that there will be no problems in life. Every life will have its share of problems. We just have to believe that with God s help we can deal with them, one problem at a time. We all will die, but worrying about it won t add a minute to our lifespan. Trust in God, live in Jesus and let the Holy Spirit be your guide. Everything else that comes your way will be a beautiful adventure, a mosaic of good days and bad that make a tremendous picture when it s all put together, but we ll never appreciate the beauty of the picture until it s finished. I knew an elderly lady who decided she wanted to spruce up her living room with new upholstery and new drapes. He husband said, We re 80 years old. We re too old to redecorate the living room. She replied, If you re ready to die, then go down to the cemetery and sit on the headstone and wait until He calls you. As for me, I m going to live every day until I die. The Saint Benedict Abbey of Harvard/Still River is hosting three Father/Son retreats for young men aged 14 to 18, along with their Dads. The dates are July 14-16, 21-23, and This is a great opportunity for young men and their fathers to take a religious retreat, together and live, pray, and work alongside the Monks at St. Benedict Abbey. There is also a separate retreat available for young men aged 18 to 30 to spend a weekend experiencing monastic life by Living the Life of a Monk from August For more information you can call Fr.
