3 Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me, a sinner. This brief prayer, or ejaculation, from the Russian monastic tradition, can be repeated hundreds of times a day. It establishes a setting for any form of brotherly correction. Before we look at the faults of another, we must look at ourselves. When we see sin in our own hearts, we need to root it out. The most effective way of rooting out sin and not just washing over it, is to receive the grace of God in the sacrament of Reconciliation. That grace of reconciliation strengthens us to resist the temptation into which in the past we have fallen. In Matthew s Gospel, Jesus proposes a way to correct a brother or sister in a genuinely Christian and fraternal manner. It presupposes that we are not guilty of sin that we don t even see. It assumes that we trying to become the best person we can be. For many people, we are uncomfortable telling someone in a loving manner that their behavior is not right. Ironically, although we don t want to talk face to face, it is easy enough to talk behind someone s back. But what good would that do? Telling other people that so-and-so is doing X, Y or Z does nothing to help the person. They might not even be aware of how their negative behavior is effecting other people. We cannot approach the person in a yelling or accusing manner. We have to approach the person with the same courtesy that we would like to be approached with. We should only do this if we know the problem is becoming well-known and is hurting this person s reputation and well-being. Sometimes the person is in denial. This is often the case with substance abuse. Don t push it. Say it and leave it there. Don t get into an argument over it. Often the person in denial will, some time later, think over what you said. It might be the beginning of a new life for that person. If the problem persists, and the friend is sinking deeper and deeper, Jesus suggests coming with a group of friends. In Alcoholics Anonymous this is called an intervention. Often a professional joins the family and friends as a facilitator. People will say how that person s behavior has effected the family or the individual. They remind the person that they will help them. Although this is most often done to help addicts, certainly, in a family or friends setting, it could be done to approach any number of issues: anger, sarcasm, financial mismanagement. This is not to address little annoyances. We all do things that unintentionally annoy people. This is for serious problems which are in the process of destroying your friend in mind or body or soul. And we remember before it all that we, too, are sinners. We, too, need God s mercy. We, too, could use the advice of a friend to keep us away from sin and closer to God. Professional Photography sessions will be held on Tuesday thru Thursday on September 19, 20 & 21 and on September 26, 27 & 28; appointment times for these dates are from 2pm thru 8:40pm. The Ladies of St. Anne will be holding their first meeting of the year this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the parish center lower hall. 5 Religious Education Classes Monday Evening Classes for Grades 7-10 begins this Monday, Sept. 11th at 7 P.M. Sunday Morning Classes for Grades 1-6 continues next Sunday, Sept. 17th at 9:45 A.M. Attending the 11:15 A.M. Mass is included in the program. If you have not registered your child, it is not too late. Are You Someone Or Do You Know Someone Who *Is interested in being baptized, making First Communion who has never celebrated these Sacraments? *Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic? *Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Eucharist & Confirmation? *Has a child over the age of seven who has not been baptized? We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation during the Easter season. There are separate sessions for children or youth. You are welcome to participate in the RCIA process with your questions, insights, and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. We will be starting up the RCIA for Adults on Wednesday, September 20 at 7 PM in the rectory. 6 Leominster City Wide Respect Life Committee s upcoming event Tuesday, Sept. 19th - at St. Camillus hosted by Joyce Aucoin at 333 Mechanic St., Fitchburg, at 6pm in the hall. In the run up to the national fall 40 Days for Life Campaign, Wed. Sept. 27th to Sun. Nov. 4th, we will watch a documentary entitled Actions Speak Louder Than Words hosted by Joyce Aucoin. "Action Speaks Louder Than Words" is a powerful new documentary that takes you inside the Pro-Life Action League for a close up look at one of the most effective activist organizations in the pro-life movement today. This emotionally charged, fast -moving, half-hour production dramatically documents, defines, defends and celebrates pro-life activism. It clearly demonstrates the key role activism plays in saving tens of thousands of babies and mothers from the horror of abortion, while keeping abortion in the public eye and propelling the pro-life movement forward to its ultimate victory - the triumph of the culture of life over the culture of death. 30 minutes. We will close the meeting with praying for the unborn at the Memorial Stone in Our Lady's Garden that is behind the rectory. Note: Park in church lot. To get to our parish hall you need to enter the main doors and turn left. The door closest to the wall, which should be open, leads to the stairs that bring you downstairs to the hall. Our hall is not handicap accessible. THE ALPHA COURSE at St. Richard Sterling THE ALPHA COURSE is being offered to anyone interested: active Catholic, inactive Catholic, Protestant, Agnostic, Atheist, Not-Sure. It is made up of three components: 1) A Meal (we eat together!!) 2) A 25 minute movie-style lesson; 3) A small group discussion. It is a place to talk, to ask questions, to share about basic questions about life and God. All opinions are respected, there is no judgment, just a safe place to be honest and consider these big issues. Those who have experienced The Alpha Course generally give it high marks in every area! And there is no cost! That s right, it s FREE! We will have an Informational Dinner for anyone interested on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 6 pm. Fall Festival in Westminster Saint Edward the Confessor Parish, 10 Church St, Westminster will hold its annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Sept. 16 from 10 am to 6 pm on the church grounds.
