3 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Cecilia Church, Leominster MA August 20, 2017 Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor. One of the great contributions of the people of Israel to world history is the concept of ethical monotheism, that is, religion based on a code of moral ethics which worships only one God. In the early years of human history, most people were polytheist, that is, they believed there were many gods and goddesses, for example, the god of the sun, the goddess of the moon, the god of the sea, the goddess of the crops, etc., etc. The people of Israel at first acknowledged the existence of these foreign gods, which is why the prophets warned the people not to worship them. Their God, Yahweh, existed as pure spirit, beyond the shenanigans of the Greek gods on Mount Olympus. Their God had one job and one job only: to look out for the twelve tribes of Israel, settled along the eastern shore of the Mediterranean. If the Israelites were faithful, he would take care of them; if they slipped into paganism, he would punish them. By the time of the prophet Isaiah, who preached from about 740 BC to 701 BC, there was an increasing notion that the God of Israel would also welcome righteous people who were not from Israel. Notice in today s first reading: Foreigners who join themselves to the Lord I will bring to my holy mountain for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. It was an important, if controversial strain, of Jewish religious thought. Not everyone accepted it. Jesus answer to the Canaanite woman was the expected response. What was unexpected was his response to her persistence. Instead of shooing her away, as the Apostles thought he should, he praised her faith and rewarded it. O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish. Now Jesus offers a new criterion for being a disciple. It doesn t matter who you come from, it is what you believe. For, as St. Paul writes to the Romans, God has mercy upon all. This concept, which was just beginning to be understood at the time of Jesus, is something that the theologians call God s universal salvific will. In other words, it is God s intent that all people come to know Christ and be saved, without regard to their race or national origin. It s what you believe, not who you were or where you come from. The great American historian Barbara Tuchman wrote an essay around the time of the Bicentennial entitled America as an Idea. Her argument was that no one except the Native American Indians could say they were American by race. Unlike Europe, where there are clearly defined borders between who is German and who is French, in the United States our ethnic origins are from everywhere except the USA. We even say it. I m Irish. I m Italian. I m French Canadian. But we re not. We re Americans. What makes us Americans, even if our ethnicity is from somewhere else? Barbara Tuchman said we are Americans if we live and believe one central idea. All men (and women) are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. When people say certain people aren t Americans or should not be here because of their race or religion or skin color or nation of origin, then they are denying the very core of what it is to be an American. Even more importantly, they are denying what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. May God bless you all, Father Bob Bruso 3

5 APPRECIATING THE ART IN ST. CECILIA CHURCH We have walked through the doors of St. Cecilia Church hundreds, maybe thousands, of times, but have we really seen the doors? All of the ten doors are the same but also different. They are the same because they are all images of Jesus Christ, God the Son, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, who assumed human form so that he could be the door through which we enter into the presence of God the Father. They are different because each door is an image of a different aspect of Jesus. All of the images of Christ are surrounded by an almond shaped frame called a mandorla. (Mandorla is the Latin word for almond.) On either side of the mandorla is a smaller image which highlights the message of the central images. At the Mechanic Street entrance, beginning from the left: 1. Jesus with the little children. On either side are a rose and a daisy, symbols of beauty and youth. 2. Jesus the judge, seated on a throne. On the left the scales of justice hang from the Cho-Rho symbol for Christ from the Greek alphabet. On the right is the sun of justice with IHS (In Hoc Signo In This Sign) inscribed in the middle. It recalls the dream of Constantine to replace the Roman eagles with the initials IHS before going into battle, placing himself and his army under the protection of Christ. 3. Jesus the teacher, with the Ten Commandments in his hands, surrounded by the symbols of the four Gospels, winged creatures standing in for the four evangelists a man (Matthew), a lion (Mark), an ox (Luke), and an eagle (John), taken from the Book of Revelation. 4. Jesus the priest (note he is wearing a priest s stole). On one side is a chalice with three crosses to symbolize Calvary and on the other side wheat and grapes. Above the doors in the center is the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Triumph done in poured concrete, carrying an orb and a scepter in the center. Over the left side door is the coat of arms of Pope Pius XI, the Holy Father in 1933, the year the church was dedicated, and over the right hand door is the coat of arms of Bishop Thomas Mary O Leary, Bishop of Springfield in (The Worcester diocese wasn t created until 1950). On the Third Street side, at the entrance: 1. Jesus as the Transubstantiated Eucharist. It is Jesus we receive at Holy Communion, the reality, not just a symbol. On one side is a butterfly, which has been transformed from a caterpillar and the other side a phoenix, a mythological bird which rises from the ashes and cannot die. 2. Jesus the Good Shepherd, with a lamb in his arms and the shepherd s staff over his shoulder. On one side a fish ( I will make you fishers of men, Jesus told the Apostles), on the other side the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei). The image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Triumph is above the doors. Over the altar servers sacristy door 1. Christ the Universal King. On either side the Alpha and the Omega, the first and last letters of Greek alphabet, symbolizing that Jesus is the beginning and the end. On the rectory side: 1. Jesus the Carpenter, with the tools of his labor on either side. 2. Resurrected Christ, with the seals of the scroll from the Book of Revelation opened on one side and the sun of Christ of the other. Above these doors is the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Triumph. Over the priests sacristy door: 1. Christ crucified. On one side is the crown of thorns with the three nails, and the other side the chalice of the Precious Blood.
