3 Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor. This weekend we celebrate First Eucharist for the children of the parish. It is a joyful day for the children, for their families and for all of the parish. But the joy of the day has to be transmitted into a commitment on the part of the parents to continue the faith formation of the children, and that happens through regular attendance at Mass as well as religious education class. The Parish Council voted unanimously at our first meeting on April 7 to connect religious education and Mass for our parish s young families. The first week after Labor Day this year, religious education classes from grade 1 through 6 will be held on Sunday morning at 10, followed by the 11:15 Mass. This leaves all day Saturday free for family activities, sports, or maybe just staying in your pajamas and watching cartoons. Music is a vital part of the liturgy and we are looking for guitarists and a keyboard player to present lively music that young people can sing. We will be buying a children s hymnal to use as well. Of course, our magnificent Casavant organ will be featured at the Masses at 4, 6:30 and 9:45. We have always depended on our young people as altar servers, but we would like to get more children involved especially at this Mass, as lectors, singers, bringing up the Offertory gifts, etc., and the homily will be geared toward the children. Of course children are welcome at any Mass, but we think by making this Mass family-friendly, more families will be comfortable to worship together, not worrying if the baby fusses or the three year old decides to climb on the pew. In the meantime, let us pray for the children in our First Communion class, for their parents, and for everyone in our beautiful family of faith, St. Cecilia Parish. God bless you all, Father Bob Bruso Merci a Madame la Poutiniere (Ginette LeBlanc) and all those who worked on poutines, fricot and râpée for sale in April. Their generous work made $ 3, for the parish and kept a lot of fans of Acadian food very happy! 6 St. Francois-Xavier de Montmorency Laval Francois de Montmorency-Laval was born to the French nobility in 1623, the third son in a large family. He studied with the Jesuits at College LaFleche and then began studying for the priesthood at the College de Clermont in Paris. His two older brothers, both army officers, were killed in battle and both his mother and his bishop urged him to leave the seminary to inherit the family s titles and estates. After some legal negotiating, he resigned everything in favor of the next oldest brother and he returned to his studies. He was ordained when he was 24 and was named archdeacon of the diocese of Evreux. An archdeacon s job was to visit parishes and report back to the bishop. As an aristocrat, his priestly life could have been very comfortable, but his model of priesthood was his patron saint, Francis Xavier, and he wanted to be a missionary. Originally he planned to go to Tonkin (North Vietnam), but he was not given permission to go there. He spent some time at a retreat house, asking God to direct him. In 1658, he was named Vicar Apostolic of New France, arriving in Port Royal, Acadia (now Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia) in May 1659 and later that summer he arrived in Quebec, which was to be his headquarters. A vicar apostolic has the authority of a bishop without being a bishop in an area too remote for a bishop to visit. That clearly was his ministry. He was responsible for all churches and missions from Acadia to Michigan. The next 30 years, he ministered tirelessly, in canoes, on horseback, by foot, founding parishes, organizing his clergy, fighting the exploitation of the Indians, and fighting with the government over selling alcohol to the Indians, which was very profitable for the traders. He went to France and got authorization from Louis XIV not only to ban the sale of alcohol to the Indians but to appoint the next governor general of New France. In 1662, he founded the first seminary in North America, his first seminarians being eight French boys and six Hurons. He imported Sulpician priests from France to be the faculty, because he believed the church in Canada could only survive with a well-educated and committed clergy who were habitants, natives of New France who knew the hardships of ministry to farm villages scattered miles apart. He used all of his personal fortune to build the seminary and the Cathedral of Notre Dame, dedicated in 1679 and still in use, the mother church of the United States and Canada. When he was 75, he realized he no longer had the stamina to travel throughout his vast diocese, so he voluntary resigned, but did not retire to the comfort of France. Instead he moved into the seminary to serve as confessor and spiritual director to the seminarians. Laval University and the city of Laval were both named for him, as was the Montmorency Falls. He was canonized by Pope Francis in Do my retirement plans include a willingness to be of service? St. Francois-Xavier de Montmorency Laval s feast day is WEDNESDAY, MAY 6. 6
