3 Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor. Every priest stands daily at his ministry, offering frequently those sacrifices that can never take away sins. That sounds like a rejection of the priestly ministry. It is and it isn t. The Temple priesthood at the time of Jesus was also known as the Levitical priesthood, a priesthood limited to the sons of Levi. What is more, to be a priest was the right of any descendant of Levi. Being of the right lineage was the only requirement to offer sacrifices in the Temple. This was priesthood that was based on repetition of sacrifices of animals which somehow make heaven closer, depending on the value of the livestock slaughtered. Clearly that could not take away sins. It was this form of priestly ministry that was rejected. The priesthood which can never be erased or diminished is the one all-sufficient priesthood of Jesus Christ. It is his priesthood which has taken away the sins of the world, thereby giving us all a possibility of new hope and life. The Temple sacrifice could not take away the sins of the world. The sacrifice of Jesus did take away the sins of the world. And what of the sacrifice of the Mass today? What value has it? Free standing, in and of itself, the repeated ritual of the Mass cannot take away sins if Jesus had not done it first. The Mass depends on Calvary, Calvary does not depend on the Mass. The author of the Letter to the Hebrews makes it clear that the sacrifice of Jesus is needed for the forgiveness of sin. It makes new life possible. The Mass becomes a participation in Jesus sacrifice. The power of the Mass is derived from the power of Calvary. Until we live in a world without sin, we will always stand in need of the mercy of Jesus Christ. When will that new life come about? We do not know the day or the time, as Jesus tells us in today s Gospel. All we know for sure is that it will come. United in that trust, the life of the Church is rooted in the sacrificial action which connects us today with Calvary. Calvary is renewed every time the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is offered. This participation in the sacrifice of Calvary is what gives to the Mass Christ s power to forgive sins. That is our hope. That is the strength of our faith. That is what gives us the confidence to know that our sins have been forgiven and a new life awaits us. 4 Religious Education Children in Grades 1-6 No Religious Education this week. Teenagers in Grades 7-10 No Religious Education this week. It is not to late to sign up and be a part of the Christmas Pageant. Think about joining us to help keep Christ in Christmas and remind our children about the true meaning of Christmas. It s not too late to participate!! Rehearsals for the Children s Christmas Pageant, Gr 1-6, and the Christmas Bell Choir, Gr 7 12 continue. If you would like to participate, please sign up in CCD class or call the Religious Ed office. Opportunity to serve others: This year I am looking for post-confirmation youth, college students and chaperones to join me along with young adults from Holy Family of Nazareth Parish to serve those who are less fortunate than us. We will be serving those in need in Brooklyn, NY in July If you would like to hear more about this please attend an informational meeting at Holy Family in the church hall this Friday, November 23 rd from 3:00-3:30 PM. 5 The Montachusett Chorale will present its Holiday Concert on Sunday, December 2 nd, 2:00 p.m. in Tata Auditorium, Leominster City Hall, 25 West St. The concert will benefit Karen s Closet of Leominster. Seasonal music, audience participation and traditional carols as part of the Christmas Story will be performed. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Under 18 are admitted free. Tickets are available in the Mayor s Office, Leominster City Hall or call 978/

Christmas In Acadia Major Raffle Winners It was wonderful to see so many individuals and families working together for the Parish Fair. Special thanks to the Steering Committee, the Booth Chairpersons, those who worked in the kitchens, those who helped to make the poutines and râpée, the set-up and take-down persons, those who worked in the flea market areas, the booths, the music players, those who worked so hard to organize the entertainment shows, the parish staff and custodians, the finance committee and counting room persons, the parish secretaries, and the many, many loyal parishioners who worked, or who came to support the Fair. 7 St. Anthony Christmas Fair in Fitchburg will take place at the Madonna of the Holy Rosary Church Hall, 118 Theresa Street, this Saturday, November 24 th from 10:00AM to 6:00PM. Come and shop our craft vendors for great gift ideas. Enjoy lots of homemade Italian foods and pastries. Bring the children to build a Gingerbread House along with fun activities throughout the day. There will be a Family Theme Basket Raffle, a Grand Money Raffle and we will celebrate Mass at 4:00PM. Come, celebrate and enjoy the festivities. The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. St. Vincent often asked this simple question: What would Jesus Christ do, if he were in my place now? Ask yourself What would Jesus Christ do? and then put your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul poor box so that those who are suffering will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving. Saint Vincent de Paul Society donation boxes are located on the radiators in the right and left transepts and also in the rear vestibule of our church. Contributions are welcome to help local needy families with utilities, rent, temporary shelter for the homeless, etc. COSMIC ORIGINS: DOES SCIENCE POINT TO AN INTELLIGENT GOD? Join us at Annunciation Parish in the church hall at Holy Rosary, 135 Nichols St. Gardner, on Wednesday November 28 th from 7-9 pm for an interactive presentation, led by Fr. Stephen Lundrigan, that will explore the ways that faith and science are compatible, the limits of science, and the ways that advances in Physics and Astronomy point to a Creator. The evening will include, video, presentation and discussion. People of all faiths, high school age and older are welcome to attend. 7
