3 Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor. The Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel is familiar to us who are older. We prayed it at the end of Mass from the pontificate of Pope Leo XIII ( ) until the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council (1965). It was, and is, an invocation to the Archangel Michael to protect the Church from the threats to its call to holiness both within the Church and from without. The Church is an institution that is both human and divine. It is divine insofar as it is the Church of Christ of earth, God s vehicle for the salvation of the world. It is human in that it is administered by humans, every single one of which is capable of sinning. Indeed, when Pope Francis was asked to describe himself, he said, I am a sinner who has found a Savior. To imagine ourselves somehow better than that is very dangerous territory. Whether lay or clergy or consecrated religious, we are all tempted to sin and we all need God s grace to avoid sin. It is said of the Church that it is always reformed and always in need of reformation. The perfection we seek will not be attained on this earth. The ultimate, ongoing reformation of the Church is the choice of every individual Christian to be renewed by God s grace, acting in humility and truth. As we pray the Prayer to St. Michael, let us pray for ourselves and for the entire Church, for forgiveness of our sins. Let us also in a special way let us pray for Pope Francis and all the bishops, especially Bishop McManus, that they will be true servants to the people of God, inspiring us to true holiness and humble service to all the world. The time has long since passed for us to pretend that we as a parish community have not been damaged by the sinful behavior of a priest assigned here. Dr. Don Favreau, a psychologist and family therapist, who has worked with victims of sexual abuse, will be here to listen. This is not a lecture. This is a listening forum. Anyone who has been affected by this situation is urged to attend. You have been a victim, or know a victim, or have become angry, alienated and confused by the news reports. We are not gathering to refute any reports or challenge anyone. The priest who was assigned here was convicted and sent to jail. No one is going to pretend nothing happened at St. Cecilia s Parish. IMPORTANT PARISH MEETING TO HEAL AND TO RESTORE TRUST SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28, 1:30 AT THE PARISH CENTER 3 How did it happen? What did we do wrong? Why didn t those who knew or suspected didn t speak up? Or maybe people spoke up and were ignored. A representative from the diocesan Office for Healing and Prevention will be here to explain what steps have been put in place to prevent anything like this from happening again, and to offer support to anyone who has been victimized. I know this is a very sensitive subject and many people aren t ready to talk about it, but for everyone s well being and healing, it s time to begin. Please consider coming to listen respectfully, to share what you wish to share, and to find out what is being done today. This is also a good forum for parents of children or teen agers to learn what you can do to arm your children against sexual predators.

4 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Cecilia Church, Leominster MA October 21, 2018 Religious Education Continues Children in Grades 1-6 classes resume Sunday, Oct. 21st from 9:45-11:00 AM and encourage children to attend 11:15 AM Mass to continue building a friendship with Jesus. Teenagers in Grades 7-10 classes resume October 22nd from 7:00-8:15 PM. Next week in Sunday s Religious Education Classes is Saints Remembered Day. Please plan to dress up as a Saint and plan to be part of the entrance procession at the 11:15 AM Mass. Youth Altar Servers are needed at St. Cecilia Parish You come to Mass, why not get involved and participate? Any girl or boy who has made their First Communion and is in Third Grade or older is strongly encouraged to join. If you are interested, please call the rectory. There will be a New Altar Server training session this Sunday, October 21st after the 11:15 Mass. Great news! Due to outstanding response a new date has been added. Star of Bethlehem Due to bad situation and the interruption of tourist trade that is happening with our Christian families in Bethlehem the birth town of Jesus. Maysoon Khair will be at our church next weekend, October 27 & 28 representing school of Joy for slow learner children and over a hundred Christian families who make their livelihood through the selling of their hand carved olive wood religious articles. After all masses there will be a display of these hand carved items such as nativity scenes, crucifix, rosaries, last supper and many other beautiful religious statues. Please look over the carvings that are available and help support this self / help project to keep the children and the Christians present in the holy land of Jesus birth. 5 RCIA Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Our parish RCIA group resumes this Fall. If you have been baptized but have not received First Communion and/or Confirmation, RCIA is for you. If you are a baptized Christian who is not Catholic but wants to know more about Catholic Christianity, RCIA is for you. If you have never been baptized but want to explore if you are being called to be a Christian, RCIA is for you. RCIA is a commitment only to know more, to share, and to be open to others in our shared journey of faith. What you choose to do on that journey is up to you. Please share this with friends and family members who don t go to church but might be interested in the step. BIBLE STUDY CONTINUES OCTOBER 25th We meet on Thursday evenings at 6:30 at the Parish Center. This year s theme is The Acts of the Apostles From a Gathering of Believers to the Community of the Church. All adults are welcome. Christmas in Acadia Fair Meeting All are invited to join us this Tuesday, October 23rd at 6:30 pm in the parish center lower hall for a meeting to discuss our upcoming Fair. Are you looking to make a donation this year? Here are a few suggestions for you...
