3 Dear Friends, A Message From Our Pastor. Through Baptism, we have been invited to the banquet of the Lord. Many of us were baptized as infants and we really had no say in it one way or the other. That is why the Church provides for the separation between the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation. Confirmation is an opportunity for someone who was baptized as an infant to confirm the decision made by one s parents and godparents. That is why, if you are not baptized until you are a teenager or an adult, you are also confirmed at the same time. There is no need to separate them. For those who were baptized as infants, the separate administration of the sacrament of Confirmation becomes your turn to accept the invitation to be a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ within His Church. Of course, the invitation given through Baptism is irrevocable. It will never go away, even if we reject the chance to receive the sacrament of Confirmation. This week, after school, I will be interviewing the Confirmation candidates from the parish. I have told them already that the first question I will ask is, Why do you want to be confirmed? I said if they don t have an answer to that, then I won t ask any more questions and we will consider that the interview is ended. That does not mean that they are no longer candidates for Confirmation. It just means that they need more time to understand what is happening in the sacrament and how they are called to respond. Adolescent reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is not meant to be difficult, but it is not meant to be something done on automatic pilot either. It s not meant to be celebrated as graduation from religious education. It s not meant to be a reward for perfect attendance at CCD. It s meant to be a conscious invitation to living one s life as a Catholic Christian. It is an invitation which demands a response. Like the parable in today s Gospel, we have been invited to the wedding feast of heaven, the Eucharist of Christ Our Savior. The great gift of free will is a two edged sword. God respects our dignity to such an extent that He gives us the freedom to make our own choices, even if sometimes we make bad choices. We can say yes to the gift of eternal life or we can say no. But if we do say yes, then we must live our lives in such a way as to reflect our response. We must wear our wedding garment, so to speak, at all times, anticipating to Lord s invitation. Now s as good a time as any to look back on our own Confirmation. What was it like? Have I forgotten? Was I prepared to make a commitment to the Lord? Am I ready now? Take a few minutes to ask yourself, What did commitment mean to me when I was a youngster and what does it mean today? If someone asked you today if you wanted to be confirmed and why, what answer would you be prepared to give? May God bless you all, Father Bob Bruso ADULT FAITH FORMATION "Our Lady in Scripture, Tradition and Catholic Devotion" Join Fr. Bob for a faith-filled look at the role of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the life of the Church continuing this Thursday at 6:30 PM in the Parish Center. 3
