5 BLOG Preventing Domestic Violence...Our Role, Our Responsibilities as a Church The United Nations has launched a campaign to prevent, and with the hope to eliminate violence against women and girls in all parts of the world. In 1991, the Parliament of Canada declared December 6th to be the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. It was on December 6, 1989, 14 women, individuals at l École Polytechnique de Montréal, were killed in a gender-based act of violence (killed because they were women). What is domestic violence? It is a pattern of behaviour used by one person to gain power and control over another person with whom he/ she has or had an intimate relationship. Who is affected by domestic violence? Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence, whatever their age, race, economic status, religion, or education. Violence against women does not only occur in non-christian homes. Unfortunately, as Seventh-day Adventist Christians, we hear of women who experience not only physical forms of violence but also sexual, emotional, or financial. While men can be victims of domestic violence, women represent the overwhelming majority of victims of such violence. Around the world, seven in every ten women experience one or more form of violence. Why is it important to address domestic violence? Everyone has the right to live in safety and with dignity, free from intimidation, and the threat of violence. The question for us today, however, is What would Jesus do? ANNOUNCEMENTS Dec 6-12 Bible Reading: Jer One chapter a day. Dec 12 Baby Dedication: Parent(s) / guardian(s) must speak to the church clerk or call the church office one month in advance to schedule baby dedication. 6 ANNOUNCMENTS Stewardship Feature: As the New Year approaches, the church is completing the process of selecting officers to serve in various offices and capacity. It becomes a challenging process as many, for whatever reason, do not see it a blessing to serve, and so many would prefer not to take an active role in church ministry/activity. They do not want the commitment and responsibility; do not think themselves capable or qualified. The labourers are few. For those who cannot decide, I encourage you to count it a blessing to be called to serve and to those who have accepted the call, let us serve in spirit and truth. Repeatedly the Saviour says Many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first. Christ would have those engaged in His service, not eager for rewards, nor feel that they must receive compensation for all they do. He would have our minds run in a different channel; He sees not as man sees. He does not judge by appearance but estimates a man by the sincerity of his heart. Those who have brought into service the spirit of true sacrifice and selfabasement are the ones who will in the end stand as first... The gift of God is eternal life. Although nice, let us not be concerned with earthly reward; instead let us focus on doing His will because it is the right thing to do irrespective of all gain. The victory to be gained through Jesus makes the crown very desirable and appealing. Review and Herald, July 3, 1894 ANNOUNCMENTS The Grenada Toronto Community Network (GTCN) invites all to their Tea Party which will be held Sunday December 13, 2015 at the Toronto Central Seventh-day Adventist Church between the hours of 2-6 pm.
