5 PASTORAL BLOG Who Are You Remembering on Remembrance Day, November 11? It was precisely at 11:00 a.m. on November 11, 1918 that the First World War which had begun in 1914 ended. On August 4, 2014, Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke eloquently and movingly about the need to remember the 66,000 men and women who gave their lives during World War 1, and the estimated 172,000 who were wounded. These were courageous, determined and dedicated soldiers, sailors, and airmen who fought for what they believed. In his commemoration speech he paid tribute to the brave and courageous men and women in arms and stated that Canada is proud of its service members who helped to ensure Allied victories in places like Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele and Amiens. In September Prime Minister Harper also commended the men and women who defended and sacrificed their lives or who were wounded as they served their country in the Second World War from Little did he or anyone know that he would be paying tribute to another brave Canadian soldier, Corporal Nathan Cirillo, who was brutally murdered on October 22, while standing guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa. Every day men and women in the services, be it police, fire service or the army, put their lives at risk for us. You might have had parent who fought in World War 1, World War 11, or one of the other wars. You may currently have a son or daughter in the military, or the navy. Today we must all remember those who make sacrifices for us. Lest we forget: On this Remembrance weekend, as citizens we must be loyal and watchful as we face the crisis of ISIS and other terrorist groups that seek to wreak havoc upon human beings. Our freedom should never be taken for granted. Every day we must pray for and support those who are in authority (Romans 13:1-7). But above all, remember that the greatest sacrifice ever paid was by Jesus Christ, our Lord. He gave His life for every human being (John 3:16). We know it is more blessed to give than to receive. Help us then not to be content to let the other person have the greater blessing.
