1 Crystal River United Methodist Church Date: August 12th In This Issue E Note From the Pastor Sunday School Needs Bethlehem Wall A Golden Opportunity Life Groups Friends, This past weekend we gave out a list of canned goods that can be used in the food bank. The list will be in the bulletin again this weekend and I will see about posting it out on the web. When you go to the store and there are specials or sales, pick up one or two extras and this will help in the Feeding the 5000 ministry. Thank you for serving in the Kingdom. This week school started across Citrus County. Keep the teachers, staff, children, and parents in your prayers. Serving as an educator today is a challenging job, considering the political and cultural changes going on around us. As parents, be involved with your children, keep open communications with their teachers, and be a partner with the school so your children will receive the best education possible. If we can prepare our children to think critically, have a good foundation in reading and math, and develop the ability to find answers to their questions, they will be well prepared academically for their future. In addition, I would also say they need to be taught to love God. So if you have children, grandchildren, and they are not being offered an education in discovering a personal relationship with Jesus, who is the creator of everything, then consider making that a part of their spiritual journey this year. As human beings we are physical and spiritual beings, and both need to be formed and taught in the ways of God. Pray for our children. Discovery Group Divinely Unique Celebrate Recovery Newsletter Announcements Service Times Week at a Glance Birthdays Anniversaries Sunday School Bright Beginnings Stephen Ministry Congregational Care Team LAST WEEKEND We began a new sermon series last weekend entitled "How to Deal with Difficult People." All of us have dealt with difficult people, and at times we all can be difficult. We looked at how to deal with "Overly Needy People" - people who never seem to get their act together and are in constant need. How do we help in healthy and functional ways that honor God? I shared with you four types of "Overly Needy People." These four types were a summary and were not meant to be a complete list: 1) The Consistently Insecure Person, 2) The Overly Dramatic Person, 3) The Non-stop Talking Person, 4) The Financial Freeloading Person. All of us have experienced people like this. Now God calls us to meet the needs of truly needy people, and there 9:00 A.M.
2 are a lot of people in need, but there is a big difference between needing and wanting. This is where you have to discern the difference. The people I spoke about last week, who can be difficult, are the people who believe they are in need, but in many cases are people who have more "wants" than "needs." So here is how I suggested you deal with "Overly Needy People." 1) You meet people's needs and not their wants. You do this by meeting the real need and not the false want, and you pay attention to their actions and not just their words. 2) You set healthy boundaries for their sake and for yours. This can be accomplished by setting boundaries. Two good boundaries to set would be a) A Time Boundary as to when, where and how you might help. b) A Boundary of Expectations. If we do "x," then you must do "y." 3) Allow people to face the consequences of their actions. This means you cannot become their rescuer. Rescuing makes you a codependent in their lives. Traditional Service 10:30 A.M. Contemporary Service Second, let Jesus be their Savior. You cannot be their savior so stop applying for the job. Help the overly needy move away from you and closer to Jesus, for He is the only one who can ultimately solve their problem, for their problem most likely is more spiritual rather than physical in nature. How to deal with difficult people is a question that all of us could use some help with. WEEKEND WORSHIP This weekend we will deal with "Manipulating" people. We will again look at setting healthy boundaries, and seeing how we might speak into situations that keep you from manipulating others and keep you from being manipulated. God wants us to live healthy lives, but so often we forget that Jesus is the one who points to how we are to love ourselves and then to love our neighbor. Jesus is the great equalizer, because of his work on the cross in forgiving us of our sins. Ultimately Jesus is the one who can set the boundaries for us and teach how to keep from manipulating our neighbor. Join me as we seek to deal with difficult people in the way Jesus would have us do this. Invite a friend, use our promo video by going to and share it on Facebook. Hope to see you this weekend in worship. BLOOD BANK THIS WEEKEND The Bloodmobile will be at the church from 8:00 until 1:00 this Sunday. Consider making time to give a donation. All donors will receive a T-Shirt. Thanks for this gift of life. Have a great Friday. Hope you have had a great week. If you are a follower of Jesus, all weeks should be great, even in the midst of challenges, for Jesus is in control and this life is not the end of the story. Let us not just hear the Word, but let us live the Word. Michele and I are thankful for being able to serve Christ in this outpost we call Crystal River UMC.
