AUGUSTINE SPOTLIGHT MAY 27 THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST Something that I am challenged about with Catholics, being one myself, is that we sometimes demean the most precious and unique gift that the Catholic Church has to offer the world the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus in the Eucharist. We must first start with the fact that almost 40% of people who claim to be Catholic do not believe in the Real Presence. This is difficult to hear and to accept. What I expect is that many, if not most, of these Catholics are by birth and no longer practice their faith. However, there are some practicing Catholics close to me who state that Communion is what God wants it to be, yes or no. What they seem to fail to grasp is that when the Eucharistic minister states, The Body/Blood of Christ, and they say, Amen, they are saying Yes, that is true. If they do not, in fact, believe in the Real Presence, then they are lying, knowingly or unknowingly. As a Eucharistic minister, I see this as an important matter that each one of us who receives should take extremely seriously. If there is sin in such a situation, it is between the receiver and God. However, a more important demeaning of the Body and Blood of Jesus in the Eucharist is from those of us who claim to believe and mean it when we say, Amen, but then belie the Real Presence within our body and soul by our actions almost immediately upon receiving the sacrament. We are apparently immune from the grace that should flow from this sacrament. I often think that our Protestant brothers and sisters would be much more receptive to joining our church if they witnessed more real evidence of the Real Presence. If there is sin in this situation, it goes beyond the receiver and God because it pushes away our brothers and sisters. This is not to say that all is lost. I witness many people who demonstrate immense reverence for the Real Presence, both in receiving our Lord at mass and in living their lives as the real presence of Jesus among God s children. I am inspired. There is grace here that spreads well beyond the receiver and God. So, on this Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, no matter where we find ourselves on the spectrum of faith and action above, may we pause during mass, both before and after receiving Jesus into our bodies and lives, to fully acknowledge and accept Him and then live as if we believe our Amen.
