1 T HE ILLUMINATION N E W S F R O M S T. D A V I D S E P I S C O PA L C H U R C H St. David s Episcopal Church 1015 Old Roswell Rd. Roswell, GA Update from the Senior Warden... Dear Holy People of God, As we begin the summer months, I wanted to share some parish updates. There has been much activity already this year and more to come in this busy and lively parish! Daily Directed Prayer: This is a year of key changes, including the search for a new rector and the addition of a new mortgage. Yet we face these challenges as faithful Christians, with the love and support of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Your Vestry has committed to daily directed prayer for God s guidance, support and provision for St. David s. Wendy Wittmayer has also started a prayer team to support the parish with daily prayer. Thanks be to God for the willingness of our parish to join voices in reaching out to the Risen Lord for our daily provisioning! Search Committee: The parish survey has been completed and the Search Committee is in the process of finalizing the St. David s profile. The profile will be reviewed with the parish in July. Once the profile is complete the search for candidates begins. The Diocese tells us to expect many candidates interested in St. David s. God already knows who our new Rector will be and it is our job to be in daily prayer and open to His wisdom and will for this parish. A huge thanks to our faithful Search Committee for their continuing work in this key area! Finances: We are continuing to work towards recovery. The Vestry has put together a 3 year plan to address our financial concerns: Year 1 (2010) is hard as we adjust to our current situation, Year 2 (2011) will be harder as we begin to pay principal on our new mortgage, and Year 3 (2012) will see us positioned for sustainable success. I am pleased to report that with the support of this parish, we are meeting our financial objectives as planned in Year 1. Below are some of the specific actions to help with this recovery: Re-negotiated the loan with American Trust Bank, allowing interest only payments for 18 months, and a reduced ongoing interest rate Communicated with parishioners about outstanding Jeffords Fellowship Hall (JFH) pledges and encouraged non-pledging families to make a pledge Actively planning a robust, ongoing stewardship campaign to kick off later this summer Sinclair House: we have a St. David s angel who has assisted us with a no-interest loan on this property, to assist us with cash flow, while we work through our recovery. As we are all aware, selling real estate is difficult right now, and this assistance gives us time to develop a plan for our youth who currently use Sinclair House, as well as time for the market to improve. As a reminder, summer months are typically lower months for parish giving. It is critical that you keep your pledges current. Our expenses don t take a vacation so we need your continued support this summer. St. David s accepts on-line giving, should you prefer this method. Contact Cathy Cheatwood or Linda Thomas in the church office, if you have questions or would like help with an on-line account. Rest assured that we are being good stewards of the funds we receive, from ongoing operating fund pledges, to JFH funds, with special gifts, and in designating the children s offerings...continued on page 5 Inside this Issue Pg. 3 Parish Life Pg. 4 Camp Mikell-Kid Summer Camp 1 Pg. 6 Mission Board News Pg. 7 Delegates to Diocesan Annual Council Pg. 8 Rock the Block - August Concert w/ Banks & Shane! 4 CAMP MIKELL KID SUMMER CAMP 1 A n o t e f ro m S u m m e r c a m p a t C a m p M i k e l l K i d C a m p 1 Six years ago, Ken Struble, Director of Camp Mikell, and a former Ass t. Priest here at St. David s, asked me if I would like to be a dean at Mikell for one of the summer camp sessions. My answer was SURE! - uh - what s a dean? What I learned was that being the dean the provider of a spiritual morning program during a session of summer camp is a wonderful opportunity to express your faith, exercise your creativity, and return to your childhood! The session this summer was from May 26th to June 1st. On the Dean s staff were Peggy, Doug, Anna Fallon; Colleen and Kara Bast; Susie and Becca Clements, and Judy Beecham all St. David s parishioners. We shared a program based on the summer theme: Pieces of Peace. Using a letter a morning, we experienced: Peace through Prayer, Exercise, Art, Church, and Environment. The pictures show some of the fun we had! Other church members were present at this session: Campers: Tyler McVay, Matthew Kloess, Maggie Sutton, and Luke Nolfa Counselors: Philip Spofford, Ben Asbury, and Dolapo Fayemi Camp Nurse: Jody Butler Ewing (along with her daughters Nora, Keppy, and Mallie) And on Summer Staff: John Fallon and Brett Wilson Thank you, St. David s, for your prayers and support! 5 .SENIOR WARDEN UPDATE, CONTINUED to support our children s ministries. We continue to keep the tight expense controls in place at St. David s. I can personally vouch for the diligence of our wonderful St. David s staff in holding firm on expense control. Additional Revenue: if you haven t seen all the new activity at St. David s during the week, please stop by! The Roswell Bridge Club is renting space in JFH several days a week and we will sponsor children s bridge activities and a bridge camp this summer. Additionally, the Emory Summer Reading Program rents our space for summer activities. We ve seen JFH rented for graduation parties and other events. Remember this wonderful space and recommend it to your friends and colleagues. We have a marvelous opportunity to increase our revenues, while also warmly introducing others to St. David s. Detailed reports on cash flow projections and financials are available on the Vestry bulletin board in the hallway outside the Nave. These financial reports and Vestry minutes are available monthly following each Vestry meeting. Pray that God will continue to give us this day our daily bread and provide for our short term and long term needs. Facility Improvements and maintenance Angels among us: You can expect to see the fruits of gifts from other St. David s angels who have made donations of time, talent, and treasure to enhance some of our spaces. Keep your eyes open for improvements in our courtyard and Old Parish Hall over the upcoming months. There have been several maintenance projects, including replacing a portion of the roof (covered by insurance) and air conditioning repairs in the original building. We again are blessed with several angels who assist with greatly reduced rates for these types of maintenance requirements. Soon you will receive announcements about an upcoming work day to help spruce up our sacred space. Be an angel and join in to share in fellowship and help tend to the space that supports our community. There are several key facilities projects in the early planning stages, and we will keep you posted as additional opportunities arise for our parish family to help in enhancing and maintaining our space. And a big thanks to those angels who have offered to assist with new projects or already pitched in with miscellaneous work projects. You all are making a difference! Interim Rector: I cannot provide an update without noting the blessed addition of our interim Rector, Ken Swanson. Ken has quickly assimilated into our St. David s family, providing leadership, a calm presence, enlightening sermons, and engaging Wednesday night teachings. A big thanks to the interim search committee for discerning God s message and bringing Ken to St. David s. Ken s guidance and leadership are invaluable during this transition time for our parish. St. David s is a bright and vibrant parish. We are a supportive and loving church family. God has provided abundantly for us and will continue to be with us during our journey this year and for generations to come. Like all of us, our St. David s family has both challenges as well as opportunities. Thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ who is always with us during our challenging times, rejoices with us in our triumphs, and redeems us in our everyday lives. Your sister in Christ, Bonnie Underwood Senior Warden 5
