4 HONDURAS MISSION TEAM The Honduras Mission team will be collecting the following items to take down with them on the March/April trips. Look for the collection box in the church hallway. Clothing: The children at the residential home range in age from ages 3-4 years old to 18 yrs olds. We have about 6 teen age girls and 3 teen boys. The teen boys are all on the small/medium size. Pajamas, sweatshirts, long sleeve shirts are great, in addition to the summer weight clothes, as it s a little cooler at this new site, than where the children were living at Las Tapias. LAMB is now also supporting a nursery with 9 babies. Infant and toddler clothes are also welcome! School supplies: think arts and crafts crayons, pencils, finger-paints, playdoh, clay, glue, construction paper, etc. Also can use Spanish books and workbooks as well as 1st grade level English books. We don t particularly need to worry about standard lined paper. It s cheap down there and can be heavy to transport. Medical supplies: over the counter medicines, like cough syrup, children s Tylenol, bandaids, etc. Another Fundraiser for the Honduras Mission Team? Why? Our team has grown from 26 to 44 members this year, including 9 teenagers! We are from 6 parishes in the Marietta Convocation: St David s 23; St. Aidan s 9; St. Peter and St. Paul, St. Clement s, Holy Family, St. James 2 or 3 each, other churches 4 We have personally contributed and helped raised our individual travel cost of $1200. For 4 years here at St. David s, we received $9,000 each year from the Outreach budget. We are not funded this year. Left to raise is $14,000 toward our building project ($20,000): completing the cottage we started last year, and starting the work on a playground. All the parishes listed above are currently planning fundraisers before our March and April week trips, so we are hopeful about reaching our goal. If you have already supported one of the fundraisers this year, we are very grateful! If you haven t, or would like to again, here s your chance!!! Remember the Adobe Bricks? Look for our model cottage in the Hall on February Sundays. We hope you ll bring your children to the table and help them buy a brick so that they can feel a part of our Mission. Who knows, it may be planting a seed for a future mission trip for them. Come to the table in February and meet our 2008 Team. We look forward to greeting you! Bonnie Underwood and Edith Cobourn co chairs 4 January 23, 2008

5 HONDURAS FUNDRAISER 2008 HONDURAS MISSION TRIP FUNDRAISER STARTS FEB. 3 Beginning Feb. 3 Feb. 24, please purchase an Adobe Brick and help send our Mission team back to Honduras in 2008! 6 HOMESTRETCH Poverty amidst wealth... a harsh reality A single mother working full time at $10 per $1,600 hour Rent for 2 bedroom apartment in Fulton $834 County Utilities $198 Childcare costs $203 Food costs with food subsidies $334 Discretionary income for clothing, $31 transportation, etc One unexpected setback - HOMELESS As you travel around N. Fulton County, you pass affluent neighborhoods with large, beautiful homes. You share the roads filled with designer label cars and shop in exclusive stores. You work hard to provide your children happy, healthy lives. Your hard work pays off; success and prosperity abound. And yet, poverty abounds as well, perhaps hidden from view but all too real. Did you know that: There are an estimated 4,000 homeless people in Fulton County (Fulton County Pathways Survey 2005) The poverty line for a family of 4 is $20,650 There are 140,000 persons in poverty in Fulton County 52,000 are children (US Census Bureau) Georgia state law exempts employers from meeting federal minimum wage rates, now set at $5.15 vs. Federal rate of 5.85 in 2007 (U.S. Dept of Labor) Atlanta has the highest rate of child poverty in the nation and Georgia is ranked 36. U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2004 A new report by the Department of Housing and Urban Development found that 6 million impoverished households used most of their monthly earnings for housing or lived in substandard conditions in 2005, an increase of 16 percent, since Federal housing assistance reaches only about one in four income-eligible households. "The demand for assistance goes significantly unmet,"said Sunia Zaterman, executive director of the Council of Large Public Housing Authorities. Exacerbating the problem, affordable housing is becoming scarcer. For every new affordable housing unit constructed, two are demolished, abandoned or become expensive rentals, according to the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Other affordable apartments are lost when building owners opt out of a HUD "Section 8" program that guarantees rent payments to owners who lease to low-income tenants. These sad facts make our HomeStretch ministry all the more important. HomeStretch offers hope and a way to a better life by providing transitional housing to homeless families. Experience proves that providing safe, affordable housing along with advice and guidance from volunteer teams significantly improves a family s ability to overcome homelessness and poverty. We currently have one team in place but we have an urgent need for more volunteer teams. Please prayerfully consider joining the HomeStretch ministry. 7 CHILDREN & YOUTH NEWS Rotation Sunday School From Jan. 13 Feb. 10 our children will be studying a miracle story of Jesus, Feeding the This story is recorded in all four Gospels, the only miracle story that is. In John, there is the young boy who shares his five loaves and two fishes with the multitudes. With the blessing of Jesus, not only is the crowd fed, but 12 baskets of food is gathered, certainly proof that our Lord not only wants us to get just enough but to have bounty in our lives. Our children will probe what hunger in the world means, and through the Heifer Project, will take action to feed others. They will act out this story and make fish. They will be interviewed about what their hillside experience was in Video Alive. In Puppetry, the children will imagine how it must have been to be one of those loaves of bread, or fishes. The Computer class will review the whole story, older children will compare how the story is told in each of the Gospels. It is easy to get side-tracked on miracle stories, wondering how on earth did it happen. In our society, we have even become a bit blasé about miracles. Our teachers will reinforce that Jesus miracles happened to show the love of God, and reveal who Jesus really is! Spend some time this week discussing this story with your child, they may surprise you. Epiphany Celebration Thank you! Susie and Ellen want to thank all of the children who shared their talents, the parents for getting them here, and those who helped the children find costumes and get dressed on Saturday during dress rehearsal and on Sunday, prior to the celebration service. We particularly want to thank our wonderful cast for their part in telling the story of Jesus birth: Mary Carlisle Christian, Joseph Will Beecham, Baby Jesus Cannon Mueller, Angel Gabriel Renee Patrick, Innkeeper (s) Jacob Sutton, Innkeeper s wife Sydney Versteeg, Shepherd s Angel Jessica Bonin, Shepherds Madison Stevens, Abby Jones; Herod Brice Percynski, Magi Creighton Buchanan, Julia Couch, Isabel Jacob; Prophet Hayden Goldberg, Star (dancing) Jessie Couch, Narrators: Will Bruggeman, Olivia Hunt and Lola Fayemi. Youth wish list The Parish at St. David s is VERY good to their youth VERY, VERY GOOD! But anyone who has ever had a child knows how their list of needs seems to be never ending! Since the youth ministry is always needing things, we decided to post our wish list on the youth bulletin board in the main hallway of the church. We are looking for all kinds of things, from people willing to host parties to new four-square balls. Please be sure sure to check out the list on your way our of church this Sunday, and the Sunday after that, and the Sunday after that, and the Sunday after that Thanks for your help! Youth Sunday at St. David s It s that time of year again when when the youth get to be in charge of a service and lead the worship. On February 24 th at the 9:00 a.m., service the youth will be leading music, doing the readings, and even giving the sermon! And, just as in pervious years, Fr. Ken Struble will be joining us and celebrating the eucharist. We will also take a special collection for Camp Mikell to send back with Fr. Ken. Please join us, as the youth look forward to taking the lead and sharing their faith with the rest of the church. 7
