6 DISCIPLE I CLASS Becoming Disciples through Bible Study Do Not Delay! We need to order books in July. Disciple I is a 34-week small group study (17 weeks with the Hebrew Scriptures and 17 weeks with the New Testament) emphasizing disciplined reading of - and listening to - the Scriptures. Students use both the Bible and the study guide to complete daily reading assignments, generally about 45 minutes of reading per day, and reflection. The Disciple curriculum is organized by themes such as "Sin" and "Trust" rather than a linear book by book study of the Bible. The group will meet weekly on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-7:45 beginning August 16, Our first 17 weeks, focusing on the Old Testament, concludes Dec 20th. After the Christmas holidays we will begin the New Testament on January 3 rd with the last class on May 2 nd (allowing for a Spring break). The registration fee and the study guide is $50. Class size will be limited to twenty participants. Disciple I is a prerequisite for Disciple II, Disciple III and Disciple IV. For more information, please contact: Toni Cathcart, , toni.cathcart@yahoo.com Bob Coleman, , rwcoleman@bellsouth.net Peter Toy, , peterftoy@gmail.com Is tackling reading the whole Bible something you have wanted to do but has always seemed a daunting? Then the Disciple 1 course is for you! It is organized along major themes versus reading each book word by word. In doing so you still get a full view of the "Arc" of the Bible and an understanding of the relationship of the different books. The reading is done concurrently with a short video each class presented by expert but understandable scholars. This is then followed by discussion so the revelation of the Bible can be personal as well as educational. It does require the "discipline" to do the work. However, the time required is manageable and making the commitment is what being a Disciple is all about! (Bill Sleeper) STEPHEN MINISTRY Stephen Ministry offers one-to-one caring relationships so that those who are hurting receive the love and care they need to be supported through challenging times. Stephen Ministry is grounded in Jesus command to love one another. Through one-to-one confidential caring relationships, those who are hurting receive the love and care they need to support them through challenging times. For more information about caring at St. David s Episcopal Church, contactjon Ann Thompson, Stephen Ministry Co-chair, ; or contact the Rev. Michelle Ortiz, thestephen Ministry Referral Coordinator, at the church office at tel , ext. 102; or mortiz@stdavidchurch.org. Could you or someone you know benefit from a relationship with a Stephen Minister? 6 June 14, 2017
7 TREBLE MAKERS CHILDREN S CHOIRS St. David s has choirs for children and youth from PreK to 12 th grade! Why should children join the choir? Music helps to bring the heart and soul to our worship services. It s never too soon to start singing! Join the choir it s cheaper than therapy! Join the choir it s like yoga, but you won t have to wrap your legs around your neck! Join the choir it s like bacon, only better! Participating in the children s choirs is one of the first experiences your child can have in actually participating in a worship service. It elevates them from passive observer to active leader! It s praising God through music. Is there anything sweeter than hearing children praise God? It s a great friend group! Children who participate in music have better grades than those who don t. And they learn how music works, a skill they keep their entire life! Coming this Fall, we will have the: Cherub Choir, for PreK, Kindergarten and 1 st graders Primary Choir, for 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd graders Junior/Youth Choir, for 4 th -12 th graders Don t hesitate! Join the Treble Makers choirs this fall! Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and LIFE to everything! Plato. 8 THURSDAY MORNING LADIES BIBLE STUDY What A Savior! The Book of Hebrewswas written for Jewish believers who were torn between their new Christian faith and their old Jewish ways. They were tempted to fall back into Judaism because of growing persecution. The author of Hebrews cleared up confusion by writing an encouraging message showing that Jesus is greater, Christianity is superior, and that Christ is the perfect sacrifice for our sin! Come join the Thursday Morning Ladies Bible Study as we begin the amazing journey through the Book of Hebrews in September. We ll discover why the theme of Hebrews can be summarized in three beautiful words: Jesus is better! Call Kim Freeman for details. Needs Our Help! The unit is currently empty and it is our responsibility to ready it by the end of June for the next residents by gathering, supplying and furnishing it. Below is a list of items needed. ( 6:00-7pm Jeffords Hall; 7:00-8:30pm - choir gallery) STEWARDSHIP IN THE SUMMER June 2017 No, you can t just take the summer off from your spiritual life regardless if the Rector is on sabbatical or not. The June issue of Delta s Sky Magazine had an interesting title, The Currency of Joy. Obviously my thoughts we re intrigued about how this applies to my spiritual journey more so than my flying but that s just the way I see things. I look at headlines all the time and think about what God is telling me, not Madison Avenue, Wall Street or Washington, D.C., what s His message? My Currency of Joy comes purely from my faith in God; not that God is a candy dispenser always delivering the sweets but that in conjunction with turning over my dreams to Him, He sees what s best for me and gives me the opportunity to reach them if they are truly what His plan is for me. From past articles you know I m a huge advocate of Free Will, but also know that it is truly selfish to be selfless and that the more I turn over to God for His blessing on my plan, the more my plan come to fruition. I truly believe that looking to serve God in every situation opens my eyes to what He has in store for me and consequently becomes more of my plan as I become more of His. But Human Nature kicks in and I drift to dreaming of the Genie in a Bottle version of God who just gives me what I want regardless of His needs and that usually just explodes right in front of me. It is tough to remain in the co-pilot seat but remember who s there to drive you. When you are struggling to stay motivated to follow His lead remember Paul s message in Romans 12: He says, Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer (NIV). Living your Christian Stewardship filled life isn t easy but nothing easy is worth much compared to being challenged and achieving God s will for you. There s so much I don t understand, can t rationalize; but this I do know, that so long as I get out of my own way and turn it over to God - my dreams have a chance of happening.
