Paul Winton The Great 60 Days is about being connected about feeling connected. In particular, during this special season in the parish, it is about being and feeling connected to Jesus Christ by a connection to and with your parish church and one another. One of the significant challenges of being a large and growing parish is that people can feel disconnected, as if the Church is swirling around them or rushing past them. And so, like all really important relationships, we stay connected when we are intentional in our efforts to be connected. This has been a matter much on my mind and heart over the last months. My personal approach to ministry and that of the other priests has shifted a bit away from program and more toward just being with God s people. We like the way this feels. The Great 60 Days is a time we are setting aside as a parish to create ways to be together. The rich variety of offerings is designed so that every member of the parish can find something that interests them; some opportunity where they feel urged to be with fellow parishioners. Importantly, we are inviting parishioners to reach out within the parish and spend time with parishioners you do not yet know. Meet someone new. Open your homes, and your back yards and your time out to dinner or other recreation to another Saint David s family. I am convinced that the essential connectedness must be between the members of the parish. By knowing and caring about one another, we feel connected to one another. There is also an evangelistic dimension to The Great 60 Days. During this period we are asking We Welcome Know and Care for One Another Connected in Christ. Connected in Community. continued on page

2 The Great 60 Days continued... parishioners not only to spend time with people at Saint David s, but to help us open this community to people who may be open to an introduction to the Lord Jesus, perhaps for the first time but also in a new way. The Episcopal approach to the Jesus events is often a refreshing and life changing experience for people if we would only invite with more enthusiasm - and so we will. The Great 60 Days is at its heart a great celebration of our shared life as children of grace. Come be a part. Worship, dance, pray, sing, work, learn, socialize, invite, meditate, hope, give, dream, share, reach out and experience the boundless love of Christ in the loving arms of St. David s. We are connected in Christ. We are connected in Community. Growing a Grateful and Generous Heart The Illumination Newsletter of St. David s Episcopal Church Rector The Rev. Fr. Paul S. This year we will be using a special 4- session curriculum for the Sundays from August 14 through September 4. This curriculum, entitled Growing a Grateful and Generous Heart, is based on the Rev. Dr. John Westerhoff s little book Grateful and Generous Hearts. The introduction to the curriculum states One of the delights of parenting is helping our children discover their own giftedness, seeing themselves as persons to whom God has given a unique assortment of gifts. An even greater joy is encouraging their discernment of the ways that God hopes they will use these gifts. Of course, in the process of guiding our children, we have the hope of discerning not only our shortcomings and humanness, but some rather wonderful gifts of our own as well. During the course of these four Sundays we hope you will take the time to engage your children in what they are learning and help them make the transition from what they learn in Sunday School to how we live our lives of good stewardship. We will also have copies of Grateful and Generous Hearts available for purchase for those of you who want to learn more. Call our Church Steward, Chris Burpo at , if you have any questions. BELL RINGERS: The Bell Choir is seeking one permanent member and several subs for the coming season. We will train you, but knowledge of music is needed. The Bell Choir is open to anyone from 8th grade through adult age. Rehearsals are Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m., from September through May. The Bell Choir will play 8 services this year. Call Julie Fazlollah at to sign up. 2

Anyone, male or female, interested in playing on the team, please Jill Sutton at jms8@bellsouth.com to sign up or get more information. MUSIC FESTIVAL FROM GOSPEL CHOIR TO PUNK ROCK AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN! Okay, that s not exactly how the song goes, but on August 27 th the parking lot of St. David s will be turned into an outdoor concert hall, and we are going to make some noise to the glory of God! For those of you who haven t already heard, St. David s is organizing 60 days of events to attract folks who don't normally go to church. One of the events that is going to be youth-focused is a Music Festival which will fall on the afternoon of August the 27 th. Most of the bands are booked for the event, but I still need help on getting the word out. If I could visit your school s Fellowship of Christian Athletes, or if you have any other ideas on advertising, please call me at , ext Volunteers will be needed for the games, concessions, etc., so call to sign up! Thanks and God Bless, Katie Cholewa, Ass t. to the Rector for Youth Ministry Women s Bible Study begins Aug :00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, Parish Hall Wednesdays, August 17 - Dec 7 St. Paul which of the following statements were made by the Apostle Paul in his New Testament Epistles?: 1. Who has bewitched you? 2. I have made a fool of myself, but you drove me to it. 3. I am sending him - who is my very heart - back to you. Join us as we hear the Apostles eloquence and passion poured out for the sake of the gospel of Jesus Christ in the early church. Where do the issues of those first communities intersect with our own? What might St. Paul want to say to our parish here at St. David's? Leader: Rev. Anne Elizabeth+ 3

4 Dear Parents: The Treble Makers Children s Music Program will begin a new season this August, and we hope your child will join us! Family support is essential to make this a wonderful experience for all the children. Everyone seems to be busier than ever these days, and careful planning is needed to avoid conflicts. It is important that you and your child recognize the importance of this commitment of time and effort to what is a unique service to God s church. There will be a kick-off event on Sunday, August 7 th, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Wills Park in Alpharetta in the Lion Pavilion beside the castle playground. We will have a cook-out, play musical games, and get to know one another. Anyone with choir-age children (4 years through 5 th grade) is invited. Choir rehearsals for the Cherub Choir will begin with the first Sunday School session on August 14 th. Just bring your child to Sunday School and the teachers will get them to the choir rehearsal. Choir rehearsals for the Primary and Junior Choirs will begin on Wednesday, August 17 th at 5:00 and 6:45 pm, respectively. On August 21 st, 3:00 pm in the Chamber, we will have a Parent s information meeting about the logistics of how the choir will run. During that time, there will be a sign-up for volunteers to help out with: Sunday mornings: helping get the choir organized before the service and sit with the children in the service. Gathering names/addresses for organizing carpools (if necessary) Preparing snacks or light suppers in conjunction with Wednesday night rehearsals. This will be needed only when there is not a Wednesday evening program. When there is a Wednesday evening program, dinner will be available for $7.00 for adults and $4.00 for children under 12 (reservations required). Rehearsal assistant: setting out folders and hymnals, getting name tags, helping with attendance, possibly directing a small group activity (music skills not required), and just being nearby in case of emergencies. Support, plan and coordinate extracurricular activities. By the end of September, our goal is to have a choir present at every 9:00 am Sunday service. The 1 st Sunday of each month is the FolkMASSters, so the children will not need to be present. The 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th Sundays are ours (and 5 th, if there happens to be one)! Therefore, I need your commitment to have your child at rehearsals and on Sunday mornings (at 8:30 am) for the 9:00 am service. We may not have an anthem, but will be leading hymns and some of the service music. If your child has to be absent, please let me know by phone or e- mail. Finally, since this is a new process, there will be things that need to be changed during the course of the year. If you feel that something is not working, please let me know and, especially important, what might work better. I m not one to do something because that s the way it s always been done. I want to find the best possible situation to bring the most positive and effective experience for the children of St. David s. THANK YOU for your help. Please call or me if you have any questions or ideas!! Susie Clements , ext. 131 susie@stdavidchurch.org by Susie Clements, Ass t. to the Rector for Children s Music 4

To John and Ginger Hackett on the birth of a new baby girl, Danielle Marie, born on July 20, weighing 7lb 15oz, 19 in. long. First Communion Classes to begin The Holy Eucharist is our Lord s great gift to us. Participation in Holy Communion allows us to know the power and presence of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the Episcopal Church and here at St. David s, we invite all baptized persons to partake in Holy Communion. As our young children grow in their mind, body, and spirit they reach a time of developmental readiness. They may begin to ask questions about what it means to take Communion. Children want to understand the meaning of participating in the Sacraments, and explore the wonder and mystery of communion and worship. To help invite your children more fully into worship, we offer a First Communion class to children, ages 5 years and older several times a year at St. David s. The classes are intended to help children and their families share in, and more fully understand the experience of Holy Communion. A child, accompanied by at least one parent, attends two thirty minute sessions and one hourly session, held on consecutive Thursday afternoons at 4:00 pm. Clergy and the Assistant to the Rector for Children s Ministry lead the instruction. Our next series of classes will be held September 8 th, 15 th, and 22 nd. You may sign up at the Children s Ministries table in the mailbox hallway on Sunday mornings. Class size is limited to 12 children, but never fear we will offer another session later in the fall! Animal Lovers Unite!! All you dog lovers, cat lovers, any kinda animal lovers your help is needed on Saturday, October 1, 2005 at the St. Francis Day Festival! We will have the Blessing of the Animals in our outdoor chapel (behind the cottages) at 10:00 a.m. After the Blessings, we will have activities at the front of the church, outdoors, from approximately 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m., such as an ELEPHANT moonwalk, balloon ANIMALS, hot DOGS and hamburgers, a great bake sale, and pet photos! We will probably have pet adoptions, a pet show (an entry fee event for cutest or looks most like owner, etc.), a couple of informational booths about animals, and a highlight of the morning will be a presentation by Canine Assistants. Please plan to come even if you don t have pets! If you love animals, you ll enjoy the morning at St. David s with all God s creatures. 7 The Stained Glass Windows of St. David s, Part 5 The Four Evangelists At the ordination of a priest, during the rite that begins on page 525 of the Book of Common Prayer, the Bishop asks the ordinand questions found in the part of the service called The Examination. Before beginning the list of questions, the Bishop addresses the ordinand and issues a specific charge: You are to preach. Specifically, the Bishop tells the ordinand that, As a priest, it will be your task to proclaim by word and deed the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Because of this charge made to every new priest, I think it is appropriate that the two stained glass windows at the back of the nave, which are effectively hidden from the view of the congregation, are the very ones that the members of our clergy see facing them every Sunday when they stand in the pulpit. These two tall narrow windows are in the gallery flanking the pipes of the organ. They commemorate the four Evangelists the writers of the Gospels whose names roll, in order, off our tongues so easily after years of repetition: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These are also the plainest of all the stained glass windows in the building: generic figures of four men, each holding a bound volume, with a quill pen in hand. Above each one s head appears his name, prefaced with the word Saint, and behind each head is that device used by artists when depicting saints: a glowing disc referred to as a nimbus. The plainness of these windows is emphasized by the absence of the traditional symbols that appear so often in stained glass representations of the four evangelists -- the four winged creatures mentioned both in Ezekiel 1:4-10 and Revelation 4:6-7. (You can see these symbols embossed on the cover of the Gospel Book we use.) When Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, declared the 27 writings that comprise the New Testament to be canonical, he listed the four Gospels in the order that he believed they had been written. But most modern scholars believe that the earliest of the Gospels is the one attributed to Mark. It is the shortest of the four Gospels, and its content is largely duplicated in the Gospels according to Matthew and Luke. These three Gospels are referred to as synoptic because they present a similar view of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. There are numerous examples of passages that are identical, sometimes word for word, throughout the three accounts. The Gospel according to John is regarded as the one written last, probably in the period AD Rather than merely recount the events of Jesus life, John s account emphasizes the meaning of Jesus life, death, and resurrection. This fourth Gospel is the one whose beautiful language causes people to think of it as the spiritual Gospel. The authorship of each of the four Gospel accounts is not precisely known. Tradition, based on historical writings of the first century, says that the Matthew account was written by the tax collector called by Jesus to be one of his twelve disciples. Likewise, the last of the four Gospels is attributed to the Apostle John. The Gospel account named for Mark is said to have been written by a contemporary of St. Peter. The Gospel named for Luke (as well as the Acts of the Apostles) is attributed to a physician who was a companion of St. Paul. During the three-year cycle of the lectionary that prescribes the lessons to be read each Sunday, the synoptic Gospels are allocated one per year. For 2005, the Gospel lesson usually comes from the Gospel according to Matthew. Next year, the Gospel according to Mark will predominate, while the Gospel according to Luke will be used for many of the Sundays during Readings from the Gospel according to John occur sprinkled throughout the three-year cycle, especially during Lent and the Sundays after Easter. by Bruce Thomas, Lead Verger 7

9 We are a Stephen Ministry Church The Meaning of the Stephen Series Logo The logo's most dominant feature is the cross of Jesus. It reminds us that Christ is at the center of Stephen Ministry and all Stephen Ministry relationships. The broken person behind the cross symbolizes how we are all broken people, broken by our own sin and imperfections. The Stephen Series logo tells the story of a care receiver's journey from brokenness to wholeness through the transforming power of the cross of Jesus. It serves as a simple reminder that it is not the Stephen Minister who restores a person to wholeness. Rather, it is only through the cross of Jesus that a person can be made whole. The whole person in front of the cross signifies the wholeness we encounter through the transforming power of the cross of Jesus. It is only through Jesus and his life, death on the cross, and resurrection that we, who are broken people, are made whole. The circle is a symbol of God's eternal and never-ending love for us. God's love surrounds us, holds us, heals us, with the cross of Jesus at the center of that love. For it was Jesus, God's Son, who allowed himself to be broken on the cross to save us from our sin and give us the opportunity to be restored to wholeness through him. The Holy Season of Life s Endings Stephen Ministry Series: The Holy Season of Life s Endings: Perspectives on Practical Preparations This four part Thursday night series will offer practical suggestions and perspectives on facing some of the most difficult issues of life and aging. These presentations are designed to make thoughtful suggestions and offer ways to be realistic about the late years of our lives and of those we love. Each class will include a special speaker, a presentation and a question and answer period. Each session will be held in the Parish Hall, from 7:00 8:00 p.m. Parish members are encouraged to invite a guest. For additional information contact the Rev. There is little we will do in this life as holy as taking care of, nurturing and raising God s children. Outreach Collection for Child Development Association The August Outreach Collection is for the Child Development Association of North Fulton. We will be collecting baby food and diapers to be used at the center. St. David s provides financial support and volunteers to this program through the Outreach Ministry. The Child Development Association (CDA) is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of disadvantaged preschool children in the North Fulton community. The association focuses on hand up not hand out, to promote independence. The programs serve children from at-risk families by providing a nationally accredited program and getting them ready to learn and succeed in school and beyond. The long list of services provided by CDA includes a childcare scholarship program providing subsidized, affordable childcare for children, parent support services, summer day camp for 3 to 7 year old children at risk or with special needs, free or significantly reduced childcare for families in transition, a balanced meal program, and youthconnections, a mentoring program assisting preschoolers by matching them with youth mentors between the ages of 10 and 17. Volunteers are needed to help carry out its mission to the community. Needs include mentoring one on one and assisting in the classroom, both very rewarding. THE CHILDREN ARE LOVING AND APPRECIATE THE SPECIAL ATTENTION. The center is located in Roswell. If you re interested in learning more, contact Susan Wynne at

This class will teach you the chain of survival and everything you need to know for operating the AED. CPR must be performed in conjunction with the AED to assure the best possible outcome. If you would like to register for the class or have any questions please call Debora Carrier. If you are already certified and would like to familiarize yourself with our AED (Medtronic), I will be glad to meet with you in between services. Class: Saturday, August 27 th 9am 1pm Fee: $25 Limit: 20 people Phone: Debora Carrier home cell 12
