1 T HE ILLUMINATION N EWS FROM ST. DAVID S EPISCOPAL CHURCH St. David s Episcopal Church 1015 Old Roswell Rd. Roswell, GA Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage Interview with Dr. Stan Beecham, leader of pilgrimage Part 1 An Interview with Dr. Stan Beecham, parishioner, who led a recent pilgrimage of eleven Pilgrims along the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Fr. Paul: Stan, as you began to plan this pilgrimage for folks, what was your hope? Stan: My hope was first, to get enough people who would actually make the trip. There is a lot of anxiety for Americans about travel in such a remote place, especially when one will spend a lot of time alone. After all, we are talking about walking kilometers every day for two weeks; some of the walking is very hard. There can be uncertainty about lodging and transportation and availability of things most Americans, even when traveling, take for granted. So my first concern was if I was going to be able to find enough people who would, knowing what they were in for, actually make the trip. That was my first hope. I sort of knew that if I could get a group of folks to commit and actually manage to get everyone over there that the Camino itself would take care of the rest a beautiful experience would happen. I did have some questions about how God would work things out for individual folks. We had five people 68 years and older, but I also knew, based on my own previous experience, that there is a strange and wonderful partnership between the Camino and the Holy Spirit and that whatever needs came up would be met. God doesn t lead you into the wilderness and then abandon you, he leads you there to transform you. Fr. Paul: What worries did you have as you began the pilgrimage? Stan: Well, we know from experience that when people have pretty serious physical and emotional challenges it can get interesting. I knew that some people were really going to be pressed physically and it can be tough emotionally. It s like this: you are in a foreign country, where you don t speak the language and they don t speak English. You often times have no idea where you are and even if someone gives you directions, you re not sure they are correct. Most of the local people on the Camino are busy with their day and are used to just sort of waving you off and saying Yeah, its down there. Most people have significant challenges with blisters and pain. The walk can be strenuous with severe landscape and even more difficult when you add heat or rain. So, I guess what I wondered about was how people would react to those moments when they began to break down physically and emotionally. I also know that it is under those conditions that people are usually more open to a spiritual experience, and that is a good thing. That happened quite frequently on this trip....continued on page 4...photos on page 4 Inside this Issue Pg. 2 Vestry Election Pg. 3 Annual Reports due & Parish Life Pg. 3 Thanksgiving Day service Pg. 4 Photos of Pilgrimage to Spain Pg. 5 Nursery news Pg. 6 Adopted Holiday families Pg. 7 Advent Wednesday nights Pg. 8 All Saints Day service...on Saturday night, Nov. 1, when you go to bed!! WONDER-FULL FULL WEDNESDAYS in November Dayeinu: The Road to Personal Peace with Fr. Paul Winton, November 5, 12, 19 Within the Jewish Haggadah experience is an under-girding theology of Dayeinu (Day Aye new) which means It would have been enough speaking of the radical nature of God s generosity to His Chosen people. Fr. Paul will introduce his writing on the concept as it applies to the Christian faith and the relationship between gratitude and psychological and spiritual well-being. Simply stated: Grateful People are Happy people. Come and learn how to be one of them. The Financial Peace University continues on Wednesday nights. 3

4 CAMINO DE SANTIAGO PILGRIMAGE continued from page 1 The Camino is a magical place. Literally millions of Christian pilgrims, over the past 1,000 years, have walked exactly where you are now walking. Chances are, you will feel this collective spirit of the Camino resonate inside of you. Suddenly then, this business of calling upon the name of the Lord means something. You realize that people used to risk their lives, leave everything behind, to do what you are now doing. No matter what people come back and tell you, there is a lot of praying going on along the Camino. The Camino will humble you. At some point almost everyone reaches a point where they say I don t want to do this any more. Sometimes people even get to the point that they say they can t go any further. But over the total experience of the Camino it is interesting to watch people move from I can t to what happens when they are aware that Christ is helping them through he struggle. People who are open to real pilgrimage and not just walking the way a tourist does begin to wonder about where Christ might be on this Camino. (Next issue Part II) 4 October 22, 2008

5 NURSERY NEWS & TRUNK OR TREAT! WINTER COAT ADVISORY Sarah McVay Nursery Director The preschool nurseries (twos through PreK) use our wonderful playgrounds EVERY Sunday unless weather makes it absolutely impossible. Children AND parent helpers look forward to it eagerly! If for reasons of clothing or health one child cannot go outside...everyone in that class must stay inside. So, please bring appropriate outerwear (coats, sweaters, jackets, etc.) for the weather. Doing so will help make our Sunday mornings happy, healthy and WARM! WE ENCOURAGE SHARING BUT...not of colds and other assorted bugs! When your child has a really drippy nose or a yucky cough please be considerate of others and steer clear of Sunday School and nursery. Also please use fever-free for 24 hours as your guideline when deciding whether to send your child on Sunday. Clean Up, Clean Up, Everybody, Everywhere Clean Up, Clean Up, Everybody Do Your Share! We appreciate all our wonderful parent volunteers who spend their time on Sunday mornings caring for our two through four-year-olds during service hours. Just a few gentle reminders about leaving the rooms in order, particularly after the 11:15 service: Please refrigerate remaining juice in Sunday School refrigerator, located downstairs in the Catacombs Return sign-in materials, nametags, etc. to Sunday School bins Please restore the room to order for preschool Monday morning Even though the children have helped clean up, we depend on our parent volunteers to be the real clean-up crew. Please take a few minutes to sort cars and blocks, straighten up the play kitchen, or work puzzles, etc. We really want the rooms to be in tip-top shape! Our weekday preschool teachers will thank you for making their Monday morning routine easier! 6 ADOPTED HOLIDAY FAMILIES NFCC Holiday Families Starts October 26 th! It s that time of year again! And it s starting earlier! St. David s is gearing up for its annual NFCC (North Fulton Community Charities) Holiday Family program and we want our parish family to know how it can participate. St. David s has committed to help 40 families this year. For each of these families, we collect donations for Kroger gift cards at Thanksgiving and Christmas ($40 each). And during November, we sponsor each family s Christmas wish lists by hanging Angel Posters with stars that list the specific requests. How can you help? Pray for each of these families and for NFCC during the Advent Season. Consider making NFCC Holiday Families an annual family prayer activity and service project. Offer a monetary donation for the Kroger Gift Cards (Scott Bast will start collecting donations in the Parish Hallway look for the donation box October 26 th ). Suggested donation is $40, but any amount is accepted. Purchase a wish gift by taking a star off the angel posters on the parish hallway windows in the first week of November, and returning the gift unwrapped (with star attached) to our trailer next to the children s playground. Gift Collection will be Sundays Nov. 16, Nov. 23, and Nov. 30. We must deliver all gifts to NFCC by Dec. 5 th. Note: Bikes must be preassembled. When signing up, please make sure you provide your name, phone number, and address for contact. St. David s has a long-standing tradition of participation in this program. This year, we are provided less time for collection, but we know that with the prayers of our congregation and the help of all the volunteers, we will be able to provide joy to these families in need. For information, contact Suzanne and Charlie Gwynn, , charlesgwynn@comcast.net. For more information about NFCC, go to Clarification about Pledging Online and Giving Online: To clarify, as we have had a couple of questions: To Pledge online: meaning just to set your pledge up for next year (filling out the pledge card on your computer instead of on paper) and no money being paid to anyone and no money coming out of bank accounts, but just to let the Finance office know what your pledge will be for next year - please do the following - on the home page of the St. David's web site, click into the button that says "Pledge Online" and fill out the form. An will be generated and sent to the Finance Office for their records. Money is not going anywhere at this point. To Give Online: meaning you are ready to PAY, PAY, PAY! You are ready to have money come out of your bank account to pay your pledge or you want to make a contribution to the Altar Flowers, or you want to contribute to a Memorial for someone. At this point you click into "Access Member Info" on the church web site home page. On your overview page, you will see a green box at the bottom that says "Give Online". Click into that and follow directions to set up your payments - recurring or one-time. This transaction will come from a credit card or a bank account.
