1 Volume 42, Issue 3 February 2, 2017 the illumination news from Adult Confirmation Class The class begins on Sunday, February 5th at 10:15am in back half of Jeffords Hall. It will have six sessions that will cover the basic contours of Christian faith as well as the particulars about what it means to be an Episcopalian. If you can t make every Sunday, each class will be posted on our website as a podcast, so you can listen to it later. Should you feel called to reaffirm your faith sacramentally, or to be confirmed as an Episcopalian, Bishop Rob Wright will be with us on Wednesday evening, April 26 th for confirmation, reception and reaffirmation. Have you ever thought about reaffirming your faith? Would it be helpful for you to brush up on the basics of Christian faith? If you re not an Episcopalian, have you ever considered being confirmed by our bishop, in order to become a full member of St. David s? We also need substitute Greeters, so if you don t want to commit to one Sunday per month, you might like to try substitute Greeting. As a substitute, you may choose the service you want and serve when the need arises. We will pair you with an experienced Greeter until you are comfortable with the routine. When you observe your thoughts, emotions, and experiences with increased awareness, you can develop a deeper sense of gratitude. Additional benefits to practicing mindfulness can include: Reduced anxiety, depression Lower stress Improved sleep Anger management Personal growth Improved relationships Pain management Coping with disease(s) As Lent approaches, consider what changes you want to make in your life. Whether it is giving up an old habit or taking on something new, Lent gives us the opportunity to deepen our relationship with Christ and those around us through change. Mindfulness is an effective way to facilitate that change by helping us develop a greater connection with ourselves which, in turn, leads to stronger relationships with others. Group Sessions: Groups will consist of mindfulness exercises (meditation, body awareness, mindful movements) and discussions. Space is limited. Dates: Tuesday evenings in the Grace Parish Hall from 6pm to 7:30pm. Beginning March 7 th and ending April 11 th. Cost: $210 for 6 weeks ($35/session). Financial assistance available as needed. 7 STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE Because of YOUR Gifts The Miracle of Joyous Giving- All too often when we give out of a scarcity belief, we think that we ll not have enough leftover if we give too much; but when we give from a generosity mindset we are blessed with even more. The idea of giving and receiving more back is most often felt when it comes to giving of Time or Talent but rarely Treasure. Let s change that! As an usher I give one service a month to help with the celebration, but between the greeting of fellow parishioners and the joy of serving our church I walk away refreshed by the Holy Spirit that I ve done something pleasing to our Lord, I ve joyously worked to do His will. Granted, I gave up sitting in the pew with my wife and potentially a son or 2 and now that they are older it s not as if I m trying to get away as much, so that sacrifice isn t too great but still it counts. Time is becoming the most precious commodity to many in our society, even greater than money, yet money still remains in the tightest grasp to let go of.what have you done to advance His will that you ve felt better after completing it? That giving is from your generosity but that same level of feeling and measurement must be applied to the financial giving we are all called to do. But when it comes to money, giving isn t a loss or even a zero sum gain it s an investment of our respect, love, honor, loyalty to our beliefs. We can t buy our way into heaven, and giving of money is clearly measurable as we see it go out of our wallet, in our checkbook registry, on debit or credit card statement but the miracle is as Helen Keller once said, No one ever became poor by giving. God doesn t need our money to do His will; we need to give for our own spiritual growth. As Mark Batterson said, You can give without loving, but you can t love without giving. By giving from generosity for all 3 aspects of Stewardship the miracle of receiving even more than we give can only be felt through our faith in our Lord.
