1 Volume 41, Issue 15 September 14, 2016 the illumination news from St. David s Vestry Nominations close September 18 St. David s has been very blessed with an abundance of God s gifts provided by a loving parish. These precious gifts enable our community to continue to grow and spread the love of God not only in Roswell, but around the world. This is only possible through strong spiritual leadership, teamwork and clarity of vision. The Vestry of St. David s is the vehicle by which our parish achieves this vision. The twelve Vestry members are elected as parish leaders to work closely with the clergy and take an active role in fulfilling God s plan for the church. Each year, our parish elects 4 persons to become members of the Vestry. This year, nominations begin on September 11 and close on September 18. This should allow all members of St. David s the opportunity to vote for these very important vestry positions. and known by the treasurer to have made and fulfilled a stated financial commitment for church support. Other qualities the Vestry is looking for: Demonstrates generosity in time, talent and treasure Demonstrates strong leadership qualities (principled, comfortable voicing concerns, considerate of other s opinions) Responsible, caring and willing to forgive Do you know someone who demonstrates these qualities? If so, please consider nominating him/her by submitting the name to a member of the clergy, or to the Vestryperson of the day. Vestry Nomination Forms will also be available at a designated table in the mailbox hallway before and after Sunday services and also in the church office during the week of Sept. 11. 4 BIBLE STUDIES Women s 3rd Tuesday Evening Bible Study begins a new year 7:00 pm, Sept 20, at the home of Carolyn Powers. We welcome new members to join us for snacks and fellowship, followed by discussion. This month we ll study Joan of Arc from bestselling book 7 Women and the Secret of Their Greatness by Eric Metaxas. Future discussions of God s faithful women will include Rosa Parks, Mother Teresa, Susanna Wesley (mother of Charles), and others. If you don t have time to get the book, prepare by reading about Joan of Arc in Wikipedia. For more information, please Carolyn at cwpowers@hotmail.com. Wednesday Morning Women s Bible Study Begins on September 14 th from 11:00 12:00 in Grace Parish Hall. Fall programs include a movie series using film as a means for theological reflection. Three movies have been chosen: Chariots of Fire, The Mission, and Places in the Heart. In Advent, a special two-part class will invite us to see where poetry and faith meet in the light of our Advent tradition. Come Meet the King! the Gospel according to Matthew Please join this group of loving and caring women as we explore the life and ministry of Jesus. Matthew presents Jesus, the carpenter from Nazareth, as the promised and long -awaited Messiah-King! Embark on an incredible journey of discovery as we trace the dusty paths that Jesus walked, listen in on His fascinating teachings and insightful parables, sail through terrifying storms on the Sea of Galilee, behold His amazing healing miracles, marvel as demons flee from Him, and learn about radical discipleship. From cradle to Cross to empty tomb to His ascension into heaven, we ll follow Jesus footsteps. Whether you re brand new to Bible Study, or a seasoned lover of Scripture, we have a place for you in our group! Adventure awaits! Friendship beckons! Spiritual growth happens! Began Sept 8 every Thursday from 10:00 11:30 a.m. Grace Parish Hall. Call Kim Freeman for details DISMANTLING INJUSTICE PROGRAM Rector s Forum: Dismantling Injustice The Song of Solomon was originally a rallying cry to dismantle the injustices perpetuated by the unpopular King Solomon against his Northern Kingdom. However, the author craftily disguised his message as a love story in the form of an ancient opera taken from town to town and performed on the village green. By studying this Old Testament scripture together, we too will learn to dismantle injustices by using the one tool capable of healing both victim and oppressor: God s love. If you have ever been the victim of an injustice (no matter how large or small) or if you have ever wanted to reach out to support someone who was, this class is for you! Dr. April Love-Fordham will be speaking for eight Sunday mornings during the Rector s Forum, Nov. 6 Jan. 15, at 10:15 a.m., in Jeffords Hall. Her book, Dismantling Injustice: A Disorderly Parable of the Song of Solomon, will be available for $20 during the class. It is also available in paperback and electronic form at your favorite on-line bookseller. Please join us beginning on Wednesday, September 14, for the Wednesday Night Dinners from 5:30 6:15 p.m. in Jeffords Fellowship Hall Dinner and childcare reservations are required by the Sunday of each program week by calling , ext The cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children. All reservations can be made online at Scroll to the bottom of the home page and select the box labeled Wednesday Dinners. Please tell us the names of the children and their ages when you register for childcare. Please make your reservations so that we can prepare adequately for those attending. 4 September 14, 2016

8 ATLANTA BAROQUE ORCHESTRA Atlanta Baroque Orchestra: The Collegium Musicum Sunday, September 25, 2016, 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at St. David's Episcopal Church. Tickets purchased online at atlantabaroque.org. The church office does not have tickets to sell. Gen. Admission: $20 in advance, $25 day of concert Seniors: $15/$20 day of concert Students: $10 The Leipzig Collegium Musicum, under the directorship of a youthful G.P. Telemann, was among the first such organizations to present regular subscription concerts for the middle class. Performed in coffee houses in the winter and gardens in the summer, these weekly concerts presented a platform for Telemann's newly composed works along with those of his students and peers, including J.S. Bach's famous Concerto for Two Violins. St. David's Chapel Mass will be cancelled on day of this event, Sept. 25. YOUTH CONFIRMATION MENTORS! St. David s Youth! If you know youth at St. David's then you may be asked to be a Confirmation Mentor! This is a low maintenance commitment that is very rewarding, so if you are asked, you should definitely say, yes! This is the first year that we have ever included mentors as part of the Youth Confirmation program, so we wanted to publicly share a little bit of information in case you are asked! Our main objective is to help our youth connect with another adult who can help them think through this leg of their spiritual journey, and with any luck, you will develop a connection that lasts long past these couple of months of Confirmation preparation. The Confirmands have a list of requirements that their mentors need to meet, but generally speaking, if you are in regular attendance at St. David's, they are allowed to ask you. All you have to do to be a good mentor is make yourself available to meet with them for at least an hour a month, and be open about your own spiritual life. It's really simple! The Confirmands are responsible for identifying and inviting their mentors into the relationship. Once they speak with you, they will give your name to Katie McRee. Katie will then follow up with more helpful information in the form of a booklet. You are also required to attend a casual training at a cookout at the Sutton's home on October 2nd from 1:00-3:00 p.m. If you are unable to attend that training but would still like to be a mentor, please let Katie know and we will see what we can figure out. The training is important to make sure that you are fully equipped to guide the Confirmands during this important time. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Katie, katie@stdavidchurch.org. We hope that if you are invited to be a mentor, you will accept! 8 September 14, 2016
