Roswell, GA Pilgrimage to Bolivia Ken Swanson will lead the pilgrimage in February... Ken Swanson will be leading a pilgrimage to Bolivia from February 20 th to the 27 th. It will be to visit the Amistad Mission, which he co-founded in The pilgrimage will have three goals: to experience Bolivian culture, to establish relationships with the children and staff of Amistad, and to reflect personally on the meaning of Christian mission. Pilgrims will stay at La Morada, the mission s comfortable retreat house in Cochabamba. Each day will begin with Morning Prayer and Lectio Divina in the chapel, and have reflective teaching led by Ken each evening. We will also visit Aramasi, a Quechua village in the high Andes, where Amistad has a school, clinic and astonishing agricultural ministry. The Aramasi Valley is one of the most beautiful places in the world. The cost of the pilgrimage will be $2200, which includes airfare, accommodations, transportation and all meals in Bolivia. Ladies Bible Study on Thursday mornings Attention Ladies of St. David's! If one of your New Year's resolutions is to try to be more intentional about reading the Bible, then come visit our class and give us a try! We're journeying through an exciting Old Testament study called The Divided Kingdom and the Minor Prophets. It's an indepth study of the Books of 1 & 2 Kings, while pausing to learn about prophets such as Micah, Jonah, Hosea, Joel, etc. If this is a part of the Bible that is unfamiliar to you, then what better reason to join us? We meet every Thursday morning 9:30--11:00 upstairs in the Bethany Room (back hallway). Come be a part of our circle! Good friends and good coffee await you! Call Kim Freeman for details. Bell Choir The bell choir has received two new low bells and is now in need of an additional ringer. Rehearsals are Sunday mornings at 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. in the Emmaus room (at end of upstairs back hallway). You need not know how to play for we will teach you, but a knowledge of music is helpful. Call Eileen Nahser at for more details. 3

4 STEWARDSHIP & NEW YEAR S RESOLUTIONS! Would it be easier to keep your New Year s Resolutions with God involved? As you begin another year fighting for a locker at the gym, knowing that all you have to do is survive till about Valentine s Day, and the rush will be over for another year; have you ever wondered what would happen if your resolutions were more focused on God s will for you than on your own desires? I certainly am guilty of trying to at least influence God s plan for me and it never fails that He shows me who the boss is quickly. So in the spirit of bringing Stewardship to the forefront of our lives, I bring to you these thoughts: Psalm 55:22 Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee. He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. It is far easier for a Christian to act his way into a new way of thinking than to think his way into a new way of acting. May I suggest for your prayerful consideration the following Resolutions: 1. Invite another family to church, at least one family per quarter- [Hospitality] Why should we have all the fun, isn t the point to share the Good News? There s a reason you re here, if not many; obviously it/they keep you coming, so trumpet to others the personal benefits you ve found here! There are plenty of people out there just looking to be invited to join us; they just may not know it yet. 2. Exploit a passion at St. David s- [Talent] Whether it s the desire to take up Ballroom Dancing, stuff envelops for mailings, cook breakfast or teach a Sunday School class there is something for everyone to do here. 3. Enrich yourself by joining something new- [Time] Check with the church offices to learn about all that s going on around here you d be amazed and humbled! There is something going on daily at St. David s and if you don t see something that tickles your fancy, start something up; I m sure somebody else shares that idea and is just looking for others to start it. 4. Get ahead of your pledge- [Treasure] Instead of trying to catch up at the end of the year as human nature seems to happen, try starting out putting a little extra in the envelop. St. David s budget is just like yours: a little frontloading can only help smooth the seemingly inevitable dips. True Stewardship is everything that we do after we each say I believe! It is my hope that St. David s becomes the main benefactor of your faithful personal stewardship, and in turn fulfills your needs. If there is anything that we can do as the body of Christ to further this message please feel free to contact me. Thomas Nolfa, Stewardship Chairman St. David s Green Guild will present a special program on January 16, for Green Sunday! The Green Guild will host the Rector s Forum on Sunday, January 16, at 10:15 a.m., in Jeffords Fellowship Hall, and present a showing of the movie Kilowatt OURS. They will also make a very special announcement about a future venture for the Green Guild and St. David s. So come and hear all about it!! 4 January 5, 2011

Dress Rehearsal for ALL Saturday, January 8 th : DRESS REHEARSAL FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS, 1:00-2:30 pm in the NAVE. Additional Adult Volunteers Needed! Very Important! We need parent volunteers to direct each age group, help with costuming, etc. Please contact Judy Beecham at x122, or her at children@stdavidchurch.org to volunteer. THANKS! Susie Clements and Judy Beecham, Children s Ministries A Call to Campus Ministry The Diocese of Atlanta has established a campus ministry at Kennesaw State University. In order to have a sustaining and stable presence at KSU, Ellen Mintzmyer, the current Lay Chaplain (and former staff member for St. David s), is calling on parishioners in the Marietta Convocation to help her seed an Episcopal campus community at KSU. KSU is a commuter campus with over 23,000 students. Four thousand residential students stay on the campus during the week. Whereas much has been written and best practices published about residential colleges, University of Georgia or Georgia Tech for example, there is so much yet to be discovered about successful ministry on commuter campuses. As when new churches are seeded in our diocese, the talents and skills needed aren t totally clear, the commitment is most important. Because we want parishioners to help bring stability and continuity to this ministry a three year commitment is requested. If you have a heart for young adults, and you would enjoy being involved with them in worship, hanging out and programs, and you have some time available during the week (Sunday obligations will be at most monthly) please be in touch with Ken Swanson and let him know you are willing to participate as a representative from St. David s. You can also speak with Ellen to have more conversation about this challenging and rewarding ministry. elm1369@hotmail.com or An added note: Tuesday, January 18, 12noon-1:30 at St. Peter and Paul - Ellen Mintzmyer, the KSU chaplain, will be our guest to speak about Millennials. We will also hear from her about ways we can help to support this growing ministry to students at Kennesaw State--the largest higher ed. institution in our convocation. To that end, please bring any lay person from your parish who may have interest in knowing more or volunteering at/with KSU Canterbury Club. Job description: In seeding this campus community, we need lots of skills. If you can bring one or two, you will be a valuable member of our team. Three qualities that will make this ministry easier: 1. have a good sense of humor, 2. lots of flexibility and 3. a low level of frustration. The skills listed below are: Some counseling, advising skills will be helpful as students face many new situations Creative, artistic bent joyfully, students still like to work with clay, scissors, paste, - it s all good. Music we have some great student musicians but can always have more input Technology our presence on Facebook, Twitter and the KSU Clubs site could exist or could be so much better than what we have now. Teaching, Biblical and theological studies. Liturgical gifts. 5

6 Did you know that St. David s has a Mission Board? Established in January 2010, the purpose of the Mission Board is to promote, coordinate, and assist the various mission teams at St. David s in any way we can and distribute the funds designated for mission by the vestry. The Mission Board maintains a bulletin board in the hallway of the old parish hall (down from the mailboxes) with information about each team s activities and publishes ministry related articles in The Illumination. It is important for you to know that these mission efforts are due to the interest and hard work of many parishioners at St. David s, who over the years have nurtured and advanced these programs. These are grass roots, lay-led ministries, some which have a long and distinguished history of St. David s involvement in the larger community. Locally St. David s focuses on feeding and housing our disadvantaged brothers and sisters through North Fulton Community Charities ( the St. Francis Guild, Habitat for Humanity North Central Georgia ( ), and Homestretch. Beyond our local community, the African Mission Team supports the Msalato Theological College in Tanzania ( the Honduras Mission Team supports the children s home, school and women s shelter in Honduras ( and we contribute to the Episcopal Relief & Development ( which is presently focused relief in Haiti. Members of the board are Scott Bast, Edith Cobourn, Wheeler Conkling, Scott Freeman, Dave Garrett, Marge Garrett, Marilyn Hedrick, John McKinnon, Jill Sutton, and Peter Toy. Mission team leaders are Africa Mission: Dave and Marge Garrett Blood Drive: Peter Tennis and Jim Wilson Habitat for Humanity: Steve Romeyn Home Stretch: Patty Conard Honduras (The Lamb Institute): Pamm Ferrand North Fulton Community Charities: Jill Sutton St. Francis Guild: Amy Cole In the months to come there will be an article about each one of these ministries in The Illumination. We NEED your participation and prayers; and we welcome your comments, and questions. Please contact any of the above board members or team leaders. Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me. (Matt 25:40) Say farewell to Amanda Scott...who was commissioned by Bishop Alexander in November, here at St. David s, as our newest missionary to Honduras to work at the Lamb Institute. Amanda s last Sunday with us will be January 16th. Amanda has been a parishioner of St. David s for 23 years and served on the vestry twice. She first went on a St. David s mission trip to Honduras in March of 2007 and, as the saying goes, it changed her life. She has returned to the Lamb Institute ( ten times over the last three years and this past year felt called to give up a career with IBM and move to Honduras on a permanent basis (she will return every three months to see her father and two sons, and visit with us at St. David s). She warmly invites everyone to join a mission team (trips scheduled in February and June, contact Pamm Ferrand for more information) and visit her in Honduras! We will miss Amanda s energy and enthusiasm and wish her God s blessing in her new vocation! 6 January 5, 2011

7 WEDNESDAY NIGHTS BEGIN AGAIN IN JANUARY! American Religion The Rev. Kenneth Swanson, Ph. D. Jeffords Hall, Wednesdays 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. In 1831, the French essayist and intellectual Alexis de Tocquerville went on an extensive tour of America, and later published his insights in the seminal work Democracy in America. Uncannily, his analysis of the American character has withstood the test of time, and rings true even today in world far different from that which he observed. He wrote that no one can truly understand America without taking into account the huge role Christianity plays in shaping not only individual identity but the very fabric of our social and political life. Yet few contemporary Americans understand or even know about the patterns of our religious history. This course will examine how we came to be the people of faith we are today. 1/5: The Social Gospel of Liberal Protestantism 1/12: The Rise of Fundamentalism 1/19: The Pentecostal Explosion 1/26: The Christian Century Please join us for the Wednesday Night Dinners from 5:30 6:30 p.m. Dinner and childcare reservations are required by the Monday of each program week by calling , ext All reservations can be made online at Please tell us the names of the children and their ages when you register for childcare.
