2 Pastor s Paragraphs Welcome to 2016, a new year, a new beginning. For many of us it is a chance to make some changes. Some will vow to lose weight, to start an exercise program, go back to school, or start a new hobby. This year let s try something at church. On the first Sunday of each month (that is only 12 times a year) on the day we partake in Holy Communion, let us become the body of Christ by reaching out to someone here at church. Many of us with the same people each Sunday at coffee hour, but on Communion Sunday let s sit with someone different. When we share in Communion we show our participation in the body of Christ. His life becomes our life and we become members not only in Christ but also in one another and we need to know one another. Since Karen and I have been here we have MET many people but we do not KNOW many people. The people that we know well are the people that are here in the building several times a week or that serve on committees that have monthly meetings. Karen and I also need to get to know each of you. So on the first Sunday of each month get your coffee and sit at a table that you do not normally sit at and with people that you do not normally sit with. Get to know them. By the end of the year you will have made at least 12 new friends by being Christ to them and they to you. God s blessings in the new year. Pastor Bailey Caring from Within The friends and family of RUMC pray God s peace be with Julie Nicols and family. Julie s sister, Mary Ann Buback, passed away November 29, You are in our prayers. 5 Dear Romeo United Methodist Church, Thank you for the very thoughtful gift and all of the wonderful things in a gift bag which were delivered to our house. We feel very blessed by this wonderful gesture. Merry Christmas, Ted and Judy Baker Though I left Romeo, MI in June 2014, this is my second year being away from MI. I still miss the church so much!! But at the same time, I understand that my obligation is to check on my parents to see how they are doing. I had some challenging times in SD. But at the same time, God has protected me since He led me to the safest places. One of my dreams is to visit RUMC sometime in the future, including your former pastor Gary Glanville, who was so good to me. I have good memories about RUMC, including the time when there was a bad ice storm, which forced our former pastor Glanville to cancel the church services. Thank you for making me feel so welcome during my 14-year stay in this church! Have a happy new year! Daniel Tsukamoto, M.M. ROMEO UMW Please join us on Sunday, January 10 th at 10:15 a.m. for an organizational meeting of Romeo UMW. This meeting is for the purpose of electing officers and setting the path for our UMW. While we realize this may not be a convenient time for some, we hope you will join us for this short meeting. Grab a cup of coffee and a snack and join us. Caring from Within The friends and family of RUMC pray God s peace be with Kathy Smith and family. Kathy s brother, David Bishop, passed away December 17, You are in our prayers. Please know that we are so grateful for all of the prayers that all of you have given, the kind thoughts and support. We ask for continued prayers for his family, we are blessed in many ways, but extra prayers are always appreciated. The Smith Family Romeo United Methodist Church Page 5

This is an excellent opportunity for each of us to express our Christian love and support at one of life s very difficult times. Money donations are also an acceptable way to help. If you would like to become part of this ministry please call Becky at A special thanks to all the people who are serving on this Committee. Thank you church family for your overwhelming generosity. 135 Sharing Tree tags were taken and multiple gifts purchased for each one, including three bicycles! 7 YAHA CHRISTMAS PARTY 2015 The Yaha Christmas party was a wonderful gathering of friends this year. We had games, our antler chorus, and an exciting gift exchange with stealing and much laughter. Joann Higby prepared a marvelous tasting ham and turkey, and the Methodist ladies provided tasty side dishes and delicious deserts. Thanks to Joann Higby, Mary Jo Hosler, Nita Glover, Sue Coker, George Becker, Ed Buchner, Tom and Sandy Edwards and Anne Wilber. Our Yahas filled the Samaritan Tree with gloves, mittens, hats and scarves which will keep many warm this winter. Thank you Yahas for your heart for Christmas! Then Dr. Bailey gave a word of thanks before all indulged in turkey, ham, and a large variety of side dishes, and of course desserts. This is an event that should be scheduled for next Christmas. Thanks to Sandy Edwards for organizing the event and also all of those who contributed dishes and their time to make it happen. Proud grandparents are Jeff and Paula Groomes! 9 CHRISTMAS PAGEANT A very special thank you to the people directly involved in the presentation of the Christmas Pageant. Through their talents they helped each of us celebrate the birth of Jesus more fully. This was the first year the pageant featured a little children s choir. Cynthia Forsgren, our gifted organist, asked the children to join her and scheduled several evening rehearsals to get them to feel comfortable in front of a large audience. It didn t matter whether they were facing the congregation or whether they were gathered around Laura and Cynthia, they felt right at home remembering their songs. The actors of the play had also attended separate rehearsals to make sure they knew their lines. In fact, many times during Sunday s presentation, they improvised by adding very appropriate lines to their assigned lines. In this way they helped to reinforce the theme of the play. The play itself focused on Joseph. For centuries, the Christian Church has honored Joseph but slowly over the years he has been overshadowed by the special honor given Mary. We see this in famous art work. We hear phases such as Mary the Mother of God and Immaculate Conception to the point that Joseph has been relegated to the background. However, when one really thinks about all the events leading up to the birth of Jesus during their trip to Bethlehem and the immediate hours before Jesus was born, Joseph was indeed a very busy expectant father making sure Mary was in a safe and clean place for the arrival of their baby. This is why our Joseph scattered the straw about the shelter to make the floor as clean as possible. He found the feeding trough, put straw in it thinking all the while how it would cushion the baby and with its thermal qualities help keep him warm. He also moved the animals closer to and around the manger so that their body heat would help to warm the child because nights in that area are cold. A midwife was added to the play because in the village of Nazareth, Mary would have had the help of an older woman in delivering her baby. So our Joseph asked the innkeeper for a lady and the innkeeper volunteered his wife Sarah, who probably had in Bethlehem, helped several women through child birth. After the arrival of the Baby Jesus, while both parents marveled at their beautiful son, Cynthia again showed us her wonderful knowledge of music by having the church choir sing a 14 th century song about Joseph that is seldom heard. At the end of the pageant, Cynthia had the little children s choir sing with Laura Forsgren who revealed a beautiful voice in her singing debut. mi Joseph: Grant Groomes Shepherds: Chase, Xander, and Cruz Russell Mary: Haleigh Faris Wisemen: Alex Stork, Brooke Wade, Josh Sova Sarah: Madison Deming Innkeeper: Jeff Groomes The Little Children s Choir: Joseph and Eddie Zaglin, Aubrey and Catherine Zimmerman, Andrew and Audrey Rosso Manger and straw provided by David Schenburn Dr. Naomi Stasak Romeo United Methodist Church Page 9
10 Advent Tea Thank you ladies for making the tea a smashing success. Everyone enjoyed seeing how lovely everyone made their tables. A special thank you for everyone who helped make each table beautiful! It was neat to hear the stories about the different items used on the tables. Pat Morgan used her husband s Grandmother s silver. Judy Larimer used the crystal given to her by her Grandmother. Anita Glover told how she wanted a set of dishes for Christmas and her Dad gave her the money to begin to get her special set. Naomi Stasak s china was originally purchased from a German family avoiding the Russians and needed money to get to the U.S. section of Berlin at the end of World War II. Next year it will be interesting to hear the stories about each table item. A special thank you goes to Tom Edwards who comes and cleans the pots days before the tea so they are spotlessly clean. Then Tom and Arvin Martin came and boiled water so it would be ready after the concert. And who will ever forget the wonderful musicians who played such fine music. Cynthia, our organist, suggested her good friends, Susan Joul and James Bernezey, who then convinced Ivy Joul to come and sing. Mischele Makhlouf operated the sound board and began the prayer meeting with the Biblical reading from Luke, while Pat Sebastian read an inspirational story. David Schenburn brought all the holiday greens and Linda brought her mother s large punch bowl that made our entrance table look elegant. The programs were purchased and prepared by Anne Wilber. The old fashioned loor size stick Christmas tree was provided by Ilene Lock who let us use it after it had been used in the Christmas Craft Show. So you can see, a simple little evening event can only happen when everyone pitches in and makes it a great success. everyone s efforts making the tea a lovely evening was deeply appreciated. Thank You. Dr. Naomi Stasak Romeo United Methodist Church Page 10
11 To all the RUMC family who have sent me their recycled Christmas cards: I thank you. Your pretty cards collected from over the years have been put to good use this December. My students have been using their writing skills to compose personal, heartfelt messages to a list of very special recipients. We have been sending cards to little Cambri Jewel as she is a leukemia survivor! We are mailing cards and drawings to a little girl Sophia, and more were sent to a cousin of my student who has Down's Syndrome and leukemia at the tender age of cards were written last week to the 62 year old grandma of one of my students, as she thought it would cheer her up this Christmas as she begins chemo treatments. Students reminisced about elementary school and sent cards to former teachers. We reached out to soldiers and wrote gratitude messages and Christmas greetings to be included in care packages done by Jenny Teller. We have plans to use more of your recycled and donated cards to write to police officers in nearby departments, as well as residents in nursing homes. As beautiful cards fill your mailboxes once again this time of year, think of my Life Skills class, would you please? We use the front decorative part of the card and write on the back of it for our project. If you can think of an organization or a person who would be uplifted by receiving hand-written messages from my students, please send me the contact information. I have found this to be a writing exercise that students do not complain about, and I'm impressed at the way they express themselves with words to people they don't even know. I couldn't help but notice that quite often my students mention in their card writing that they will pray for the person they are writing to. It's pretty rare in public school to offer a student the chance to express that sentiment, and it warms my heart that they think of it on their own without it being directed from me. God bless all of you who gave your cards, for the love behind that small gesture is making its way to many, many people! Casey Finkbeiner Christian Education s Life Skills has developed a special series of classes entitled Faith, History, and the American Character. Each session will present a new topic on American history where faith in God played a major role in an event or in the life of an American. Three separate sessions will be held during 2016, one in the Spring, Fall, and Winter. The classes will begin on Tuesday, March 22, from 7 pm to 9 pm. Please register for the class by signing up on the poster or call Anne Wilber in the office. The first session will focus on the beginnings of Christianity in our local area and will be titled The Founding of the Faith in Romeo. The instructor for these classes will be Steve Domke, a recent retired high school history instructor in the Utica Community Schools. His 30 plus years as a history teacher as well as his research and current presentations on the American Civil War will make these sessions insightful and memorable.
