1 The Mission of Hebron UMC is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The Chimes of The Hebron United Methodist Church COME, FOLLOW ME SERMON SERIES As a church, how do we move from thinking about membership and start thinking more about discipleship? How do we move from being a member to being a disciple? What is the difference between a church member and being a disciple? Are they the same? Have we made an artificial distinction for the sake of argument? Maybe. People may join a congregation because of the call of Christ, and their missional understanding finds an outlet in the ministries of a church. They may join a church because generations of their family participated in the congregation. They may join a church because they sense that this church will meet their spiritual needs and invite them to grow in Christ. They may join a church because of its ministry with different constituent groups. People may join a congregation because of the benefits they may receive or because they discover a way to use their gifts in service to others. The reasons people join a church are many, but the challenge remains for every congregation to help people grow into a deeper relationship with God. This sermon series, Come, Follow Me is intended to move you forward into a deeper relationship with God. 2 The Chimes of The Hebron United Methodist Church Pastor Pete (continued from page 1) I invite you to join with me over the next seven weeks as we follow the growth of Peter as a disciple of Christ, landing on key pillars in the life of Peter. We will focus on Peter s response to the call of Christ to follow him and then deal with Peter s confession that Jesus is the Christ. That bold confession of faith is followed by Peter s faltering or failing. Still later, we will see the transformation in Peter after Jesus resurrection. We will see Peter serving others, proclaiming the Gospel, crossing barriers or borders erected by tradition or culture. We will witness as Peter does not stay at the same level of discipleship across his lifetime. We will see growth and change and learn that as disciples of Jesus, we are called for similar growth and change. We are not to remain at the same level of discipleship all our lives. Our prayers and our actions are to expand and go deeper because of our deepening sense of the love of God in Jesus Christ for all people. Please join with me during January and February bring a friend as we listen to the call of Jesus Come, Follow Me. 3 Our Christmas Feast was held December 18th with many members and guests. We were blessed to have the Bell Choir as our entertainment, directed by Lora Ward. The mission pins were presented to Pastor Pete and Lora for all the work they do for our church. We love and appreciate them! The Hostesses were Melinda Roeske and Jill Bell. The decorations were done by Judi Van Meerten and Holly Marshall. It was a wonderful event! We wish everyone a Healthy and Happy New Year! Call Joyce Steinhilber at Wish List Laundry soap Canned Soup Toilet paper Breakfast Cereal Juices (not cranberry) Toothpaste Shampoo Peanut Butter Pasta/Noodles Spaghetti sauce Canned Ravioli/spaghetti Cleaning products A Note of Thanks to Carolers Thirty-some carolers met on Dec. 19 th to sing some Christmas cheer to folks at Tres Amigos Restaurant, shoppers at Walgreens, and many of our shut-ins. While the children in our group passed out candy canes, folks at Walgreens and at the restaurant commented that they had not experienced caroling for many years and they were glad we were there. We also made a couple of unscheduled trips to neighbors of our shut-ins, who were grateful to be included. The enthusiasm and joyful participation of everyone in our group was beautiful to see. Thanks to everyone, young and old, who gave up an evening to join us and bring joy to others. Special thanks to Sylvia Gray for helping pack cookie tins. Thanks to all those who baked cookies and donated them for our shut-ins. Thanks to all who supported us with your prayers for good weather and good wishes. Thanks to Pastor Pete and Lora who offered the parsonage as a place to gather for refreshments after the caroling. And, most of all, thanks to our dear Lord who, by His birth, death, and resurrection, gave us the joy and the hope that is the Reason for the Season!
