2 Pastor s Paragraphs What is liturgy? By definition it is a formulary according to which public religious worship, especially Christian worship, is conducted. This definition is used to describe what shapes our Sunday morning worship services. The songs we sing, the prayers we say, the scripture we read, even the order in which we proceed, are all liturgy. Some churches are extremely formal in their liturgy. Others, such as ours, are less formal. There is another way in which I think about the word liturgy. I was taught in seminary that the word meant the work of the people. What this means is that what happens on Sunday morning is truly in the hands of the congregation. No matter what sorts of planning go into shaping our time together, the work of worship is shared by us all. And, it is intended to be WORK. By this I mean we need to faithfully show up focused, open and willing. People are at work when they sing with the choir or prepare and clean-up Tuesday s His table, or beautify our landscaping. People are at work when they teach a class or plan fellowship events. People are at work when they prepare coffee hour, or usher, or serve meals after memorial services. People are at work when they care for those persons among us who are homebound. I could go on. I am constantly grateful for all those among us who faithfully show up focused, open and willing to do the work. All of us benefit from this work. This is God s work. Are you part of our liturgy in some way on Sunday mornings and beyond? If not, it is simple enough to connect you to some work that helps keep this congregation stay healthy and better able to be of service beyond our doors. My hope is that every one of us will find those places where we can faithfully show up focused, open and willing. Call the office and get signed up to work. Pastor Bailey Let the kindness of our Lord be over us. Make the work of our hands last. Make the work of our hands last! Psalm 90:17 Romeo United Methodist Church Page 2

It was a blessed five weeks of fun, fellowship, and food as we worked together to raise money for our youth and reach out to members of the community. In total, we served a whopping 3,452 guests and provided meals to some of our RUMC neighbors to thank them for being so understanding of the hustle and bustle our Fish Fries bring. We also donated leftover food to Trinity Lutheran Church in Utica to help those in need. These and other new ideas and solutions help keep the fries running smoothly and allow us to make an even greater impact. I m honored to lead such an outstanding group of people through this event and hope the spirit and enthusiasm of the fries continues on as we move into a new season as a church. 6 Missions Sunday is May 21! Combined Service at 10:00 a.m.! This fun Sunday will include a special guest speaker regarding missions in Haiti, a Missions display showcasing our current and future opportunities, and a Silent Auction during Fellowship Time! Silent Auction donations are accepted through May 12. Auction items will be on display May 14 through May 21 with the auction ending at 11:30 a.m. on May 21! All proceeds will help to meet our budget and other commitments. Hello Everyone, SAVE THE DATE FAREWELL TO PASTOR BAILEY AND KAREN On June 11 th, RUMC will honor Pastor Bailey and Karen and reminisce the past two years of their ministry with us and to celebrate what we have shared with them. This will be a time where many will experience the natural emotions of grieving. Tears will be shed, good-byes will be said, and we may walk away with sadness in our hearts. These are all normal feelings for the ending phase of this transition. Trust that God will get you through this, just as God will carry Pastor Bailey and Karen to the next phase of his ministry. Pastor Bailey came to RUMC to help us transition from the long tenure of a single pastor. God has a plan to use Pastor Bailey s strengths for His Kingdom. Send Pastor Bailey and Karen off to Cheboygan covered in prayers and good memories of RUMC. My name is Jacob Nicol and I will be conducting renovations on the church garage as my Eagle Scout project. The project is to replace the overhead door to make it lighter for people to open. The side door will also need to be replaced because it has rotted out and in addition a storm door will also be added to prevent additional rot from occurring. The space that was between the former houses has remaining shrubs and weeds that will be removed and have grass seed planted instead. The finishing touch to the renovation is a scrubbing of all of the siding and replacing some of the trim boards to make the area look like less of an eyesore. In order for this project to be accomplished, I will need to raise around $1,300. Any donation will be gratefully appreciated and volunteering to help out on the work days would be very helpful. Thank you Jacob Nicol Romeo United Methodist Church Page 6

In the beginning: Although it has only been two years since RUMC has gone through a pastoral change, it is good to recall what it is like to begin a new phase of ministry under the leadership of a new pastor. There are three phases in the transition: an ending, a neutral zone, and a new beginning. These phases do not have clear boundaries, but overlap. It might be helpful to think of RUMC s history as a life history and to think of the present as the crossover point between one chapter and another. Perhaps it would help for us to think of the chapter we are completing as the Bailey Chapter, and the chapter we are about to begin as the Herm Chapter. As we get ready to begin the Herm Chapter, let s consider the stages of a pastoral move. Think back to the end of March when we first learned that Pastor Trevor Herm was appointed to RUMC. This started our transition. We then learned that Pastor Bailey was being appointed to St. Paul s UMC in Cheboygan. At this time, RUMC began the phase of preparing for the departure of Pastor Bailey and the arrival of Pastor Herm. We are still in the ending and neutral phases. Death and Resurrection of the Messiah Starts Monday, May 15 at 7 p.m. Filmed on location in Israel and throughout the Middle East, the Faith Lessons DVD series is an adventure in biblical learning. You will discover why Jesus turned the world upside down with his compelling call to follow him. Teacher and historian Ray VanderLaan brings together history, culture, and geography to illuminate the Gospels. 10 lessons supported by an interactive Discovery Guide will let you walk with Jesus through the days of his ministry on this earth. The insights you gain will transform your reading of the Gospels and inspire a deeper faith commitment. Faith Lessons on the Life and Ministry of the Messiah focuses on his life, and his short but powerful ministry a ministry that has shaped empires and changed the course of history. It focuses on the last week of Jesus life, his death and resurrection, and the Holy Spirit s visit on Pentecost. We will explore a new location in the Holy Land and the Bible history and message from that location. Each week s lesson is connected but stands on its own. This is a very unique presentation and I am sure you will be enlightened and moved by the content. Come each week, or just one or two. I am sure you will learn a few new things and be moved by the faith lessons. A Discovery Guide will be provided. Romeo United Methodist Church Page 10
