2 Pastor s Paragraphs December is just starting and I'm sure our streets are already filled with lights, and the stores are filled with ads reminding us not to miss Christmas. It s pretty hard to miss. So we make sure we put up lights and our tree, that we buy our presents and fill our shopping bags and send out our Christmas cards. But in spite of all the reminders many still miss the message. We get the message that Christmas is here, but we forget that Jesus is too. And Jesus is the message. We can't forget Jesus and still have a Merry Christmas. So may Jesus help to make our holidays hopeful and merry. And as we pass out gifts and make plans for our parties may we keep Jesus as our focus. May we remember why we're celebrating and why we're joyful. Our world needs Jesus more than anything else we have to offer and Jesus came to bring our joy to our world. So spread some joy this Christmas as we plan our celebrations around Him. Carol and I have enjoyed so much these past months getting to know you. We look forward to sharing in Christmas and the New Year with you and we wish you all a joyful Christmas season. Some things to add to your list to help you celebrate. Christmas Party Dec 15th at church 6 p.m. (child care provided) Christmas Play Dec 17th at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve morning combined service at 10 a.m. Christmas Eve Services 7 and 9 p.m. New Year s Eve combined service at 10 a.m. Pastor Trevor A Spiritual Meaning of The 12 Days of Christmas Each of the items in the song represents something of religious significance: The "true love" represents God and the "me" who receives these presents is the Christian. The "partridge in a pear tree" was Jesus Christ who died on a tree as a gift from God. The "two turtle doves" were the Old and New Testaments - another gift from God. The "three French hens" were faith, hope and love - the three gifts of the Spirit that abide (I Corinthians 13). The "four calling birds" were the four Gospels which sing the song of salvation through Jesus Christ. The "five golden rings" were the first five books of the Bible also called the "Books of Moses". The "six geese a-laying" were the six days of creation. The "seven swans a swimming" were the "seven gifts of the Holy Spirit". (I Corinthians 12:8-11; Romans 12, Ephesians 4; I Peter 4:10-11). The "eight maids a milking" were the eight beatitudes. The "nine ladies dancing" were nine fruits of the Holy Spirit. (Galatians 5:22 & 23) The "ten lords a-leaping" were the Ten Commandments. The "eleven pipers piping" were the eleven faithful disciples. The "twelve drummers drumming" were the twelve points of the Apostles' Creed. Romeo United Methodist Church Page 2

8 CHRISTMAS CRAFT BAZAAR 2017 December Needs: Juice White Rice Pancake Mix Pasta Noodles Soups Fruit Children s Snacks Tea Toothpaste Bar Soap Toilet Paper Feminine Hygiene The 11th Christmas Craft Bazaar was a huge success. We want to thank everyone that volunteered in any way donating to our Santa s Workshop, the elves who created our items every Wednesday, making soup or baked goods to sell at the Bazaar, donating time to work at the Bazaar or helping with setup and clean up. It is such a blessing to be part of a generous and caring church family. Your time and efforts were greatly appreciated. Beginning January 3, 2018, we will begin to prepare for our 12 th Christmas Craft Bazaar. We meet every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. and everyone is welcome. If you feel you are not crafty we can find something for you to do, or you can just sit and visit. THANK YOU! Samaritan House will be closed for the Christmas Holiday from December 19 January 3, Meijer Simply Give program benefits Samaritan House! Between November 5 and December 30, if you purchase a $10 Simply Give Card, Meijer will match each donation. On Double Days, which are scheduled for December 8 and 9, Meijer will make a $20 donation for every $10 Simply Give Card purchased! Rummage Sale Report I would like to start out by thanking each and everyone that participated in the fall rummage sale. While we experienced low community turnout, we received numerous blessings that week as well. The weather was absolutely beautiful both days! As always, our donors came through for us, filling fellowship hall with lots of treasures. I am deeply grateful to everyone that volunteered to help set-up, sort, price, cashier, tear down and everything in between. You folks are the heart and soul that make the sale possible. To all the ladies that brought baked goods, I can't thank you enough. Everything tasted marvelous. Ken Koss donated (2) very nice clothes racks to the church for this and future rummage sales and events. A very sweet lady by the name of Michelle from St. Paul's UMC in Rochester stopped in before the sale and brought their leftover bags and offered to help us organize our clothes hangers. This will help us conserve on our already limited space. We hope also, this will be the start of a networking relationship with other churches in our area that do rummage sales. We once again donated some of our nicer items to the missions committee to use for baskets at a future silence auction. We had an instance where a church family member helped out another church family member by taking some unwanted furniture off their hands. Rummage sale leftovers were donated to Turning Point, Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army, Grace Centers for Hope and Wilson's Veterinary Clinic to name a few. Naomi delivered material to a lady that makes quilts and bears for various missions in the community. I would like to thank UMW for all their support. They provided the initial startup money used. All said and done $ was raised. It's not the figure that I had in mind but, considering the low turnout, I'll take it. In closing, I would like to dedicate this sale to the memory of some very hard working volunteers of our church family, Joyce Pelto, Lynda Adkin and Dave Schenburn. They were such a joy to work with and so supportive of me when I took over the rummage sale. Let us all look to them as true examples of stewardship. God's blessings are endless and priceless when doing community outreach programs. Thank You, Patricia Sebastian Romeo United Methodist Church Page 8

Shopping, family, decorating; the time is a blur. We would like to offer you a chance to sit with fellow Christians and prepare for Christmas in your hearts. Join us for an Advent Bible study on Monday evenings where we look at Christmas through the eyes of Joseph, the husband of Mary and the earthly father of Jesus. Often overlooked, a humble carpenter who took the courageous actions that were crucial to the birth of Christ, Joseph encountered circumstances that he did not understand and were outside his control. We all face constant life challenges and we often struggle with obeying God. We will prepare our hearts, minds and souls for the real meaning of Christmas by studying this everyday man Joseph. He is a common man of distant royal lineage, a man whose betrothed shocks him with an astounding announcement: she is already pregnant and it is with the Son of God! How did Joseph handle this? How did it impact his faith? Put yourself in Joseph s shoes, look at this challenge through his eyes: a laborer who had a faith that we can all learn from. We invite you to join us on Monday, November 27th, at 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for the first of a four week Bible study. We will continue our study on December 4, 11 and 18. Join us for one night or for all four! Please contact Linda Schenburn or the church office to reserve a book for this class. Steve Domke will return as our Advent Bible study instructor and he is looking forward to seeing many of you for an hour or so in an attempt to spiritually prepare for this holy season. He was born December 31, 1941 in Detroit, the son of Ray and Irene (Kowalski) Schenburn. He grew up in a small block home in Warren near family and friends and graduated from Fitzgerald High School in David loved his family homestead in Honor, MI and spent many days canoeing and fishing with family. In 1976, David married his beloved wife Linda Hamilton Gibb at the Octagon House in Washington, where they lived and worked together in the family business. Known for his excellence in guiding and teaching children, he was invited to begin the Woodworking and Industrial Engineering program at Warren Woods Enterprise High School and taught empowered students for nearly 20 years. Through David s leadership his students learned and created business opportunities including the annual Christmas Bazaar selling their inventory of handmade tables, benches and other products.
