2 Pastor s Paragraphs I am reminded of the wise words of Friedrich Gustav Emil Martin Niemöller (14 January March 1984). He was a German anti-nazi theologian, Lutheran pastor and social activist. Because of his resistance to Hitler he was arrested by the Nazi s and sent to the concentration camps at Sachsenhausen and then Dachau. First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me. The quotation stems from Niemöller's lectures during the early postwar period. Different versions of the quotation exist. These can be attributed to the fact that Niemöller spoke extemporaneously and in a number of settings. Much controversy surrounds the content of the poem as it has been printed in varying forms. According to research by Harold Marcuse, the original groups mentioned in the speech were Communists, the incurably sick, Jews, and people in occupied countries. Other groups such as Catholics, Jehovah's Witnesses, Jews, and homosexuals were often used. After the war he called on the people to show a sense of responsibility towards their fellow-men, he pleaded with them not to forget the lessons of the past and, above all, he reminded them constantly of the burden of guilt which had to be redeemed before a new life could begin. Every man is his brother s keeper in that we are not to commit violent acts against them or allow others to do so if we can prevent it. This sort of keeping is something God rightfully demands of everyone, on the grounds of both justice and love. As Paul wrote, Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another (Romans 14:19). We may not always agree about social issues but we must always strive to treat all of God s people with love, kindness, respect and dignity. ALL people, ALL people are made by God in His own image. It is in this kind of treatment of people that we show ourselves as Christians and we open an opportunity for others to come to Christ. Pastor John Children s 2 nd Service: we all enjoy Children s Time at 1 st service with a mini version of the sermon or Odyssey lesson, as well as all the adorable smiles and comments from our beloved children. We are hoping to bring this great time to 2 nd service but we need your help. If you are interested in teaching a 3 minute mini lesson please see Erin Lane or Linda Klusendorf for more details. Thank you for serving our future generations! Romeo United Methodist Church Page 2

The Missions Dinner was attended by approximately 55 people. Additional guests came for the Program only. Speakers included Michael Agwanda with a slide show and discussion about Life for Children Ministry, Stephanie Perrin with a slide show and discussion about the 2015 Haiti Trip, Erin Lane with a description of the 2016 Detroit Trip, and several members of the Missions Committee sharing highlights of the missions that are supported by Romeo UMC. Michael Agwanda was offered other opportunities to talk about his ministry at a Missions Committee Dinner and also with friends of Alice and Alan Longley. Pastor Bailey also took him to breakfast with other local pastors. Thank you to everyone on the Missions Committee and also to Romeo UMC for supporting this mission outreach to Kenya. A special thank you to Pastor Bailey and Karen Bailey, and our entire church family, for their prayers, cards, calls, visits, and good food that truly have helped David on his healing journey. 13 MARK YOUR CALENDARS We wish to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation to everyone in our church family at Romeo United Methodist Church for all the cards, kind words, gestures and especially prayers during Doug's father Carl Forsgren's recent surgery and subsequent passing. Without this outpouring of love and support we don't know how we would have gotten through this very difficult time. In particular, words cannot express our gratefulness to Pastor Bailey and his wife Karen for their comfort and prayerful presence during our father's final moments. Pastor Bailey's visit to Carl while he was in the hospital meant a lot to him and he really enjoyed getting to know him as well. With grateful hearts, Doug, Cynthia and Laura Forsgren Once again Billy Owens will be teaching a oak basket class in October.
