2 Pastor s Paragraphs We have just returned from Annual Conference. The theme of this year was SEND. We gathered to celebrate the work and presence of God in our midst, to hear God s call and to take back to our congregations a new way into mission and ministry. The United Methodist Church offers many, many mission opportunities. They range in commitment from a few hours to many years. They are all around the world and in our own backyard. There are opportunities to prepare and serve food, tutor, medical assistance, beautification projects, disaster relief, cleaning, home repairs, camp staff, and VBS to name a few. Our newest mission in Detroit, through Cass Community Social Services, is the building of 25 tiny houses for very low income people. These houses will not be given away. The people that will be living in these homes will pay rent. Cass needs donations of everything that is needed to build a house, wood, paint, tiny house size appliances and cupboards etc. They are especially looking for someone that has a connection to IKEA (they make furniture for tiny houses) and lots of people to help build. I feel it is important to remind you that when you give monetarily to UM missions, ALL of your money goes to support that mission. They do not take a percentage out of your donation for salaries or operating cost. It has been one year since I began my appointment to Romeo UMC. I thank you for the Christian love that you have shown us, for your support, and your encouragement. A church is not owned by the pastor. It belongs to the congregation, to its members, and it is through them that the church lives. God s blessings, Pastor John UMW MEETING AND PICNIC The UMW is extending the RUMC Family of Prayer to include a prayer chain. This is a group of people who will communicate prayer requests and concerns to each other and make a commitment to pray about them. There are 3 contact persons Nancy Harrar ( ), Laura Zaiglin ( ) and Vi Abercrombie ( ) to initiate your prayer request on the chain. We are excited about this new opportunity to serve the Lord and our church family here at Romeo UMC. Please join us on Sunday, July 31 st at 12:30 p.m. for a UMW meeting and picnic. The program, presented by Shelley Rosso, is entitled Deeper into Mission. Hot dogs and beverages will be provided. Watch for a sign-up in Fellowship Hall for side dishes and desserts. All women of RUMC, 18 and older, are welcome to attend. Hope to see you on the 31 st! Romeo United Methodist Church Page 2

Finance Committee My Recent Journey with my Church Family and God! Reflections by David Schenburn June 19, 2016 You probably have noticed my walking has been different for some time. Well, over time I ve developed spinal stenosis, which consumed me with pain and affected my mobility. After a lot of research I selected a Neurosurgeon, Dr. Steve Kalkanis of Henry Ford Hospital in West Bloomfield. This journey started like most. Got up at 3:30 a.m., showered, dressed, grabbed the packed bag, and headed off into the quiet dark morning. Just like going to Metro to catch a flight. Traffic was light. My arrival time at the hospital was set for 5:30 a.m. on May 9, At the hospital my wife, and children, and brother-in- law Ken were there to wish me a safe passage. Actually the real journey started right then with nothing more than a hospital gown. After a trip thru several hall ways, I entered the operating room. The room seemed small with bright... I was no longer in control, I was out. It seemed like only seconds later I was talking to my wife & family and Pastor Bailey & wife, Karen. I thought wow that was quick, but I (continued) Romeo United Methodist Church Page 5

6 Reflections by David Schenburn (Continued) was in surgery for 3 hours. All spine problems differ. My spine was in good shape, however arthritis and bone were growing to the point of choking the spinal canal to my lower extremities. Dr. K. performed a laminectomy on L2-3, L3-4, L4-5, L5-S1 along with other things only a surgeon would understand. Linda, who I ll refer to as Nurse Jane, took off 2 weeks, from church, to help me rehabilitate. Nurse Jane visited me daily at the hospital until the 4 th day, I was released. My wife, Nurse Jane had a hospital bed readied for me by the window, in the family room, where I could watch what was happening from within the warmth of our home. The journey was getting more interesting. Nurse Jane hovered or attended to me, with Breakfast, lunch, medications and everything I needed to make me comfortable, to speed my recovery. I m not sure who organized the evening meals, but we had meals delivered to our home everyday for 2 weeks. (Which was a huge blessing). During this period Laf (Robeson) from our church, offered to care for our poultry, among many other things! Joy Robeson would stop periodically to check my incision and assured me I was healing nicely. After two weeks, the journey began to crescendo. So what does a person lying in a hospital bed do for a few weeks? Well TV? Radio? Read? But after a while even the birds and squirrels in the feeder outside the large window figured I was just a piece of furniture. After 6 weeks, I m a fourth of the way on the journey. I have no pain! I am walking without assistance and have eliminated all the medications. One day Laf dropped off a book for me to read. I thought great! First of all I m a picture guy or the books have to be thin, with large print. You get the picture? The book Laf gave me was almost 2 inches thick. I thanked Laf, but I thought quietly, not a chance. He said, When you finish this, I ve got the 2 nd volume for you. Now I don t know if I didn t want to hurt Laf s feelings or if God was nudging me. Many of you have heard or read the series called, Left Behind, authored by Tim Lahave, published in the late 90 s. As I looked at the book Laf left, I thought I may as well cruz through it, just in case Laf would ask me if I read it or not? With apprehension, I started to read the book, hoping it would hold my interest. To my surprise, I couldn t put it down. Laf brought the second volume, and I read it in record time. Getting back to the journey. I thought my surgery, the wonderful meals, cards and visits, from so many were the peak of the journey, but the journey began to crescendo again. When you take a journey it usually means You alone are on a journey. I wasn t alone, my church family was with me and praying for me. I heard this daily from visitors or Jane would tell me daily, So & So said, They are praying for you. I was also on the prayer lists at my sons & nieces churches and many churches of people we associate with. In conclusion, what started with surgery as a journey ended being so much more! I learned a lot about my personal faith, as I journeyed with God! My Church family taught me a lot about walking the walk with their faith rather than just talking their faith! I thought I was humble before, but I have been truly humbled with all of your kindness, generosity, and prayers! I would love to talk to you about the book series! 7 Romeo UMW Mission - Turning Point As we reported earlier, Romeo UMW has chosen to support Turning Point, a shelter for abused women and children, located in Mt. Clemens. It was recently brought to our attention that Turning Point will be opening a second office in southern Macomb County and is in need of books and other items listed below. There is a bin outside the office for donations. The items do not have to be new. Cash donations are also appreciated. List of Play Room Toys for Southern Macomb Site Dollhouse preferably gender neutral and large enough for Barbie dolls Dollhouse furniture Barbie dolls and Fisher Price dolls (all ethnicities, genders, and ages) Trinket toys or miniatures (for use in a sand tray or other sensory like bin) Imaginary play items (dress up, play swords, etc.) Puppets Puppet holder aka hat rack Toy box Kid s kitchenette Play food Toy phones (or old cell phones or house phones) Play money Play cash register Small toy soldiers Play doctor kit Building blocks Books Title Subject (age group) The Right Touch Sexual abuse (7-10) Do You Have a Secret Sexual abuse/secrets (4-10) How Are You Feeling Today Baby Bear Domestic violence (4-10) Cory Helps Kids Cope with Sexual Abuse Sexual abuse (3-17) 101 Play Therapy Techniques Play therapy (3-17) Trauma Proofing Your Kids Trauma/parenting (parents) The Way I Feel Feelings (3-7) Hands Are Not For Hitting Feelings/behavior (3-7) What to do When You Worry Too Much: Guide Worry (9-15) Romeo United Methodist Church Page 7

8 As you know, UMW has elected to support Turning Point, a shelter for abused women and children, and the Northwest Haiti Christian Mission Orphanage. Turning Point is opening a second office in Macomb County and has provided us a list of their needs which includes books pertaining to abuse and domestic violence. This information was published in the bulletin and was also part of the weekly . The Board feels a great way to show our support is to provide the books that have been requested. To purchase all the books on the list through Amazon would be less than $100. The Missionaries are traveling to Haiti in mid-july. The board would like to authorize $100 to be spent on requested supplies to supplement donations. If you are in agreement, Shelley will purchase the items in need. The Board did not want to make these decisions without first going to the membership for your vote and/or comments. It you do not agree with the decision to spend the funds on these missions, or have any questions, please Becky at melaseke@gmail.com by Friday, July 1 st. We would like to deliver the books to Turning Point next week if we are in agreement. If you are interested in making the trip to Turning Point please let Becky know. The Haiti supplies will be delivered to the Missions Team in early July, for July 14 delivery to Haiti. 10 Our youth from Macomb County enjoyed the 2nd Annual Battle of the Bands supported by Youth For Christ on Saturday June 11th. Two of our own groups performed at the competition and took away awards! 2nd Place went to Kristin Kage (12th grade at Romeo HS) and Haley Deming (College Student) for their performance as the band "2 Short". 1st Place went to The Real Propaganda which the band's members include four 12th graders at Romeo HS: Jarod Nevitt (Matt & Amanda Stork's son), Scott Stobak, Kyle Finos, and Jake Malek. 3rd place went to the Youth Worship Team at Evident Church (Chesterfield, MI). 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place received trophies, with 1st Place also receiving 4 tickets to Cedar Points, Point Fest in September which features Christian bands. This year's headliners are Toby Mac, for King and Country, and Chris Tomlin. There were 50 youth at the event that included a pond for swimming, slip-n-slide dodgeball, basketball, volleyball, food, and lots of music. We are super excited that this year the event grew with 4 bands participating and more youth groups participating. We are looking forward to next summer! Attention all congregation members - Happy Summer! There will be some changes in our youth / young adult ministry starting July 4 th, 2016 as I will be moving from a full-time to a part-time role here within Romeo UMC. I greatly appreciate the flexibility and understanding in this change as Danny and I make some adjustments to meet the needs of our son James. As we move forward, I hope that you see, that the needs of our youth / young adults are just as much of a priority to Danny and myself, as well as RUMC, as they ever have been. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Our open door policy stands the same as before and communication is very important to us. I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and I look forward to seeing all of you youth / young adults at our summer events!
